Today, there are over 28,000 stores in seventy-six countries across the globe glorified by millions. The outstanding success of this chain store can be attributed to not only the highest quality of coffee beans and best tasting coffee products, but to the mastermind behind the company. In the book Pour Your Heart Into It, Howard Schultz discusses the many aspects of his life and career that have been crucial in achieving the success that he holds today. Growing up surrounded by poverty, Schultz always dreamed of a brighter future for himself and his family. His experiences throughout his life and the hardships he has overcome have shaped his journey to the top and played a critical part in creating the person he was able to become. Throughout the book, Schultz highlights the importance of putting everything you have in your mind and soul into a successful brand built from the heart. Throughout many factors in his life, he shows how you should never give up on what may seem far out of reach, no matter the obstacles standing in your way.
“One of the fundamental aspects of leadership, I realized more and more, is the ability to instill confidence in others when you yourself are feeling insecure” (Schultz 144). The first factor to his success was his humble and genuine outlook. Throughout his journey, his mentality encompasses the exact characteristics of a leader. He notes that the development of the company required a dedicated team and a positive environment. He emphasizes on how not everything can be accomplished on your own, and realizing this important fact is a huge step towards true success. Others looked up to him, and was sure to never show doubt to another. Schultz trusted in those around him, confident that he had imprinted his values into them.
Another factor to Shultz’s success, more importantly, was his determination. Despite the poverty and misfortune he was faced with, Shultz had a passion that was stronger than any outside force. He wanted to create a better life for himself and his loved ones and had confidence that he could do so. After recognizing this dream he had, he knew that failure was not an option. As quoted from the book, “Once you overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, other hurdles become less daunting. Most people can achieve beyond their dreams if they insist upon it” (Shultz 19). This quote is important because it truly shows that despite his grueling past, determination has propelled him forward. He took advantage of all the opportunity and trouble that life threw at him, turning it into a success story. This passion that he held so strongly allowed him to break the barriers of his past and chase what he had faith he could accomplish. The dedication that Shultz holds has proven the strength that a dream has and shows just how far it can take someone.
In conclusion, we see how humble beginnings keep Shultz humble throughout his whole journey. He gives credit to not only himself, but also all of the people who supported him throughout the process. From his journey from the projects of Brooklyn to the CEO’s office of a multi-billion dollar company, I believe his leadership and his determination are enormous contributors to his successful today. “It wasn’t until I discovered Starbucks that I realized what it means when your work truly captures your heart and your imagination” (Shultz 30).
