Nursing Burnout  

Nursing theory is used to bring many aspects of clarification and guidance to the profession of nursing; the framework can enable the researcher and learner to identify weaknesses and address problems with a systematic approach. For this assignment the nursing theory that will be used is Jean Watson’s theory of human caring; this method highlights the many of the useful aspects that can be applied to the concept of nursing burnout in the profession. The theory of human caring emphasizes the holistic healing environment for patients and staff with an emphasis on the mind, body, and spirit and can be applied to excellence in nursing that shows a reflection of compassion and caring (Norman, Rossillo & Skelton, 2016). The areas that will be addressed in this paper include a description of the issue, the application of the human caring theory to the proposed area of improvement and a summary review of the concept and how this can be addressed through theory framework.

The concern being presented in this paper is nursing burnout, this issue is one that impacts the nursing field from employee satisfaction and how it can affect the structure of a unit. When reflecting on the subject of nursing burnout and how this changes the day to day nursing operations much can be seen through the statistics regarding workplace conditions, research has been shown that new graduate nurses are experiencing severe burnout at 66% within the first year of employment related to negativity from management, inadequate staffing and the high emotional and workload demands, how the new graduate perceives the management style has a direct correlation to the employees satisfaction (Heather, Spence & Roberta, 2014).

These issues should concern every manager in the healthcare field enough to ensure that the environment being created is one that does not contribute to burnout as this has a direct correlation to the issues of absenteeism, staff turnover rates, and employees mental health (Heather, Spence & Roberta, 2014). The primary people affected by the point of burnout is the employee that experiences the emotional distress that occurs from the harmful environment, the patients that are being taken care of by the nursing staff and the cost that the facility incorporates by having to hire and train new staff.

  After reviewing what negative impacts the concept of nursing burnout can have on an employee and facility further review of how Jean Watson’s theory of human caring can be applied to the area of nursing leadership; the human caring method concentrates on the mental wellbeing of individuals and gives creative solutions for incorporating the approach into practice. One strategy that can be used to create the type of environment that provides employees with the positive reinforcement needed to be successful requires changing leadership styles to suit the needs of the employees better.

Previously management focus was on collaboration, effective decision making, employee productivity, and strategic planning. While these areas are ones that will always be important the strategy to prevent burnout, it requires higher emphasis on authentic leadership styles that enhance meaningful recognition for the staff, building relationships, participative decision making that allows for innovation (Turkel, 2014). The healthcare systems are changing from a volume based to value based concept that has initiatives towards creating a patient experience that allows the patients to feel included in their care and are valued as an individual. While this is a great agenda, the primary healthcare provider that they see on a consistent basis is their nurse. If the nursing staff does not feel they are being focused on in ways that involve visionary leadership styles that embrace the nurse as the first point of contact and a primary giver of the excellent care that is expected very little can move forward for delivering high-quality patient care (Turkel, 2014).  

The strategies that can be used to influence the outcome of nursing burnout with managers influence can be incorporating the human caring theory into the organization's workplace culture. It is possible to develop leadership styles that foster supportive work environments that are sensitive to the needs of employees through leadership development courses that highlight the human caring theory and how to utilize it for internal nursing satisfaction and reduce burnout for staff (Heather, Spence & Roberta, 2014).  Implementing the human caring approach into the educational environment of students is imperative to start the foundation of human caring. If used in the educational setting it is found to decrease the focus on only skill-based tasks and allows the students the opportunity to develop the skill base required to deliver quality care and provide the necessary environment to learn to create caring-healing environments (Carey, 2016).

Evaluating the use of future research that can be done on nursing burnout is one that can be done on a consistent basis as the healthcare system is continually evolving to improve evidence-based practice and patient satisfaction. Having the ability to use nursing theory with emphasis on the human caring theory allows for research on the impact of how the nursing environment can be better improved, the level of introduction of nursing theories related to differing degree levels and how an employer can efficiently incorporate the caring theory into leadership and management courses (Van Bogaert et al., 2014).

In conclusion, there is much research that has been evaluated on the concept of nursing burnout; using the theoretical framework that nursing theories allow for can help researchers approach the topic and use the idea of Jean Watson’s human caring theory to incorporate the concepts. To create environments that foster a nurturing workplace that values the hard work that nursing professionals are subjected to employers need to highlight the caring environment, individual focus and holistic healing methods that they use for patient satisfaction and incorporate those thoughts and ideas into valuing the nurses that deliver the care.
