Introduction:

The purpose of this report is to find out a possible future sport industry career way, including changes and evolutions in sport industry and try to find out the expectations with them. Firstly, some potential changes for the next five years with sport industry will be discussed. what’s next, the reason why sport manager was selected as the job cluster will be explained. Thirdly, after finished three Career Guru tests, the key findings will be reviewed and analysed, in order to demonstrate my strengths and areas for improvement. Last but not least, personal SWOT and GAP analysis will be briefly discussed.

1. Research and critically analyse industry trends for your selected target industry. Forecast potential changes for the next 5 years.  What are the factors causing change at the moment?

a) What jobs are expected to change or disappear?

Australia is a famous sport country and sport has been and will continue to be part of Australia’s cultural identity, so sport industry will be a highly sensitive industry in Australia. Try to find out the future trend in Australia will play an important role in contributing long-term policy, strategic in each level that within Australia sport structure. According to SRI (2016,p.1), digital jobs would be expected to change under such a fast development of technology. Digital talents would be in high demand due to global sports industry’s development and the appearance of new digital technologies that completely changed the manner with how sport is produced, delivered and consumed. On the other hand, some jobs may be changed or no more exist due to the development of technology. More and more real-time application of devices that can reflect the data immediately and precisely. So it might harm referees because they are not sure with making every judgement correctly (cleaninghouse,2016,p.3).

Why is this happening?

There are some factors that causing change these days, such as development of wearable technology. For example, smart watches are become more and more popular use as in fitness and activity. “The advantage is they allow some level of personalisation as well as providing real-time data that can work as a motivator an also provide fitness results.” (sport play your way,2017,p.7). In addition, some creative training way are shaping people’s life, such as Body Weight Training, High-Intensity Interval Training and Strength Training. They all aiming on an improving people’s balance, power effectively and benefited with people who has chronic diseases. The most important point is the growing number of qualified professionals are needed, people are chasing a professional, effective way to contribute fitness goals.

c) What changes do you forecast for the next 5 years?

In next 5 years or even longer, Australians will keep enjoying play and watch sport no matter playing catch in the backyard to the high performance (Olympic and Paralympic podiums). Acceding to clearinghousesport (2016, p.3), there are six megatrends that as major shift in environment, social and economic factors that will substantially change the way Australians live. They will play a significant role in the future of Australian sport, including A Perfect Fit, From Extreme to Mainstream, More than Sport, Everybody’s Game, New Wealth, New Talent and Tracksuits to Business Suits. Moreover, when Australians will get older and more time-poor in their life, they all relative with sports landscape. In “Intergenerational Review of Australian Sport 2017” (2017, p.6), it mentioned about around 46% people are desired to work longer hours than before, with the average full-time worker doing sic hours of unpaid overtime each week. As a result, some new sport landscapes especially as personal training and digital entertainment are growing so fast as Aussies become wealthier.

2. Research and select a job cluster. Why did you choose this job cluster?

Sport manager is playing a significant role in sport industry, such as support the coach and manage problems that relating to the team and organise equipment for team practices and matches (southland secondary schools sport,2017, p.4). It can be very diverse and numerous responsibilities that comprise the client and coach or other personnel. A good sport manager can make their clients to concentrate on wining without concerning about the business or company side of sports, this is the difference between sport agents. What’s more, sport managers may face variety situations that make sure client’s need are met and allow the team to compete at their highest level. (study.com)

a) Personal soft skills (e.g. teamwork, enthusiasm)

To being a good sport manager, communication and organisation are most important. That means a sport manager should always put the team first instead of his own interests because sport manager plays a vital role in their team. Team work or team building skill is one of the most important personal soft skill that make a good sport manager. It’s the responsible of the sports managers to organised that everyone that in the team builds his or her skills to achieve the team effective between the sponsors and organisers. On the other hand, decision making skills are also vital. Sports managers are playing a leader role in the team. That means they got to be ready to create strong selections and persevere with them. Those selections might be make in a short time or during this field. For that reason, sport mangers must be very assured every player’s ability in an exceedingly timely fashion. b) Technical knowledge and skills (e.g. database management, customer service, bookkeeping, event management, social media campaign analysis)

To become a sports manager, it’s necessary to have a comprehensive business skill such as human resources, management and miscellaneous skills. Firstly, the sport manager is responsible for hiring and firing athletes at the professional level. At college level, sport manager will focus on develop talent players with recruiting team in order to bring the best talent to his college. Sports managers are not just work with team staff members, they also act as sports agents for individual players, helping them negotiate contracts with teams (Chron,2015, p.2). Furthermore, sports manager also applies management skills in each levels. Sport managers may also work as a facility manager, supervising the whole sport organisation, managing services and staff, planning match schedules and overseeing the maintenance of the facility. What’s more, there are many of duties and programs that sport managers need to fulfil. For example, some work for recreational, community and education athletic programs and some work at fitness facilities or health clubs in charge of operations (Chron, p.3).

3. Review your current capabilities, discipline knowledge and areas where you are developing

skills or knowledge.

a) Review your experiences and identify relevant experiences and results that showcase your abilities. Use the SHAPES tool to analyse your habits and abilities.  Note that you will have the opportunity in seminars to discuss these, but suggestions may include community or volunteer activities, school leadership roles, sporting activities or casual work.

According to the “Temperament” assessment report, it shows that my personality type is INFPs. It indicates I am an introversion, intuition, feeling and perceiving person. “INFPs are very sensitive and intuitive, often creative and enjoy helping others to develop through insight.” I used to be a badminton athlete in China, live in a professional sport school for a very long time. It makes me have strongly held values and live according to my beliefs. I represented for my high school, our city and state to play many tournaments as player and volunteer, so that means I will fight passionately to defend a cause I believe in. In addition, I prefer live in a n impersonal or regimented environment because I can handle more various situations that may make me under pressure. As a team leader before, I always struggle with perfectionists and under stress, but that also motivated me and pushing me starting and finishing things. As a sport management student, I am so happy that this major is resonates with my core values and is more of a career than a job in my opinion.

b) Review your academic performance to date. Are there any units where you have done well, shown specific abilities, or particularly enjoyed?

According to “Learning Styles” report, my score is 80 out of 100, it demonstrates that I have use a range of approaches to learning and I should keep build further on my strength by looking various learning styles below and play my best through my skills. I have done well with economic units such as “national economic policy”, and this is my first time to learn a level 3 unit. This unit required students should have an enrich global economic knowledge and good mathematics skills. So I must be studying this unit in pragmatic way. In order to that, I read global economic news every day, discuss with my classmates and practise many times.

c) Discuss your key findings clearly demonstrating your strengths and areas for improvement.

There are some key findings developed through “Personal Resilience” assessment report. First of all, my overall Resilience score shows that I am medium on resilience. My strength is “support Networks” and I need to improve “Organisation” area. That means I am very confident in the support me get from others and see the benefits of sharing my stress with my friends and good at when to seek opinion or help form others. But I also need to be careful about not too offload onto others. In “Organisation” scale, shows me that I need to study with structure than being disorganised. Changing my learning style is also would be considered as keeping a work-lag. As a result, my learning style need to be structured and organised.

4. Prepare a GAP analysis and SWOT.

a. Describe the skills and knowledge that you need to develop to meet industry standards.

As a sport management major student, academic skill is one of the most important and basic skill that I need to focus and develop to meet sport industry standards. Moreover, be effective in sports management, soft-skills such as communication skill, organisational skills and people skills are required and I am deficient in. Organisational skill indicates that someone can deal with multi-task situations, organise a calendar and manage stuffs move into advance. People skills defined as a sport manager can act be discreet and handle the relationships between athletes, coaches and media. (international journal of physical education, sports and health,2017. b. Prepare a SWOT showing your strengths and weaknesses (from section 3) and opportunities and threats from section 1 and 2.

Strengths:

1. Good at 3 kinds of languages

2. enjoy helping others

3. Good with public speaking

4. have work related experience

Weaknesses:

1. Lack English language/writing skills

2. Lack time management skills

3. poor at dealing with multi tasks

4. lack of structure and possibly even chaos

Opportunities:

1. eventually go on and study a master degree

2. get into a sport organisation when graduated

3. My work experience would be good experience for my career

Threats:

1. textbooks are expensive for international students

2. lack of time in study due to work

Conclusion:

In conclusion, more technology and effective way will be the main trends of sport industry in five years and digital media will keep changing for next 5 years. In the second part, sports manager was selected as my job, the main reason is my current major is fit with this job. In addition, including people skills, a sport manager needs multiple skills to deal with every possible situation. What’s next, my current capabilities and learning style was analysed through the assessment wools that indicated I am a very sensitive and intuitive person, have good social network skills, but need to act with structure. The last part is about GAP and SWOT analysis, showing my external and internal strengths and weaknesses.
