Working as a manger to complete the tasks and to manage an organization is not easy. There are many challenges which they should face, more or less.  For instance, dealing with employee’s satisfaction, maintaining turnover rate and/or keep their capability to work and achieve goal etc.  These can be argued that there is the biggest managerial challenge.  Focusing on the intercultural communication aspect in cross-cultural organization.  Culture is human being which is confirmed by others.  It have been past generation to generation continuously, and provide important setting for individuals to consider and step out to face the external world.  Culture can be remarkable from each other by the diversity in the way they expect on meaning and their attribute.  To distinguish one culture from another relies upon the narrowing points we would like to make on each side of the distribution (Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner, 1998). Obviously, cultures in each part of the world are difference, the cross-cultural company combine all point of views from each cultures and tend to work in the same directions.  It seem contradict hence it can cause the conflicts.  In this essay will illustrate that there are many managerial challenges that each manager have to deal with in recent year.  One of the biggest, if not all, challenge in cross-cultural firms is the intercultural communications and how it affect to the company.  Follow by the theory which can help manager to adapt and enhance their team workers.

Recently, many issues of managerial challenges always exist in every company with unavoidable issue.  The research was conducted by Center for Creative Leadership (2017) reviews that there are the top six challenges which are ranked.  Firstly, to develop managerial effectiveness is the challenge for developing all relevant skills such as time management, negotiation skill and the way for doing the work faster etc.  Inspiring or motivating other is one of the task that manager should do, to inspect their team which is the satisfy way of working.  Moreover, manager tend to continue developing their employees, mentoring and coaching are included.  As a hole company there is one challenge called leading a team which are the challenges of managing team, team-building and developing the team.  Likewise to instill employees’ perception toward team priding.  Next, guiding change is manager’s task as well.  Manager could prepare themselves for coping with any problem that can occur and manage their team also mobilize the team to work fluently.  Lastly, to mange internal investors and politics is the factor which manager should consider. These are the challenges of relationship management, politics and image.  Therefore, all managers should realize those factors and find the solutions for improving their team and enhance employees’ capabilities to achieve company’s goals.

Then, it can be argued that the biggest challenge for cross-cultural company to confront tend to be the intercultural communication which can result in diversity. It is because each cross-cultural company which containing staffs from various nationality might misunderstand their colleagues through conversation and way they behave.  To begin with, communication points which can roughly be divided in to three main points. Firstly, verbal communication which the common in every society.  Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner (1998) states that the verbal culture in western society is outstanding.  They develop almost innovations for more convenient for them, these for supporting verbal communication such as graphics, computer programs and word-processing.  They will be irritable and and anxious once they stop talking.  However, in western community has different style of communications.  For example, in latin culture while someone is listening they usually interrupt speakers and the speakers might not indignant.  In contrast, while someone is speaking the others need to listen, they can start speaking after the first person stop speaking this is the way Anglo-Saxons do. If they were working in the same group and they would not understand why other interrupt in will cause a problem. Secondly, a variety of speakers from different languages can face a challenge.  Obviously, it is easer for a group that use the same language to work together because they tend to have a similar background and cultural experiences and also less interpersonal.  In some case, employees know that their ability to speak in other language will be evaluate from their managers so they might not discuss and give a good idea while having a meeting unless they are forced to use other language for technical term words (Woo and Giles, 2017).  Lastly, non-verbal communication can be everything to express your feeling without words for instance eye-contract. It might seriously in western society on this issue because they use it for confirming interest. Some culture consider that to respect an elder is about eye-contact. In Surinam children could not make eye-contact for show that they respect but in Curacao without making eye-contact is harsh (Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner, 1998). Undeniable, different way of communication can affect every firms, it is because we as a human have to contact to other to gather information and complete the tasks.  Thus, if they don’t completely understand other’s meaning, it will lead to misinterpretation.

When the challenge was happened, managers should solve them.  However,  there are two level of development which are leaders level and individual level.  First of all, managers should understand the ‘cultural agility’ which recommended leaders to have abilities to fluently, comfortably, and work effectively in diverse cultural with various people from many other countries (Caligiury 2013, cited in Caligiuri and Tarique, 2008).  Refer to leader’s cultural intelligence, leaders could compromise every conflicts which have tendency to happen also encourage and bring their subordinates’ effectiveness in achieving each tasks.  In general,  cross-cultural interaction can be considered as the outcome called ‘intelligence’ that authorize person’s adaptation to environment (Ang et al., 2007; Earley and Ang, 2003; Earley et al., 2006 Cited in Caligiuri and Tarique, 2008). Moreover, creating culturally intelligent actions (Thomas et al., 2008 cited in Caligiuri and Tarique, 2008). For instance, to adjust the communication style such as to participate more effectively between different cultures (MacNab and Worthley, 2012 cited in Caligiuri and Tarique, 2008).  The another solution is on individual level which can use ‘the social learning theory’ this theory offers for each individuals might develop themselves through observing way of surrounding people’s behave.  Combining three component, start with pay attention to an new behaviors and analyses the results why they act like that.  Next, retention is the next process which seem to memorize and remember that behaviors, then these process can impact on changing the behavior (Black & Mendenhall, 1990 cited in Caligiuri and Tarique, 2008).  Reproduction is the final step,

to intake the behavior which has already be observed and produce the outcome in appropriate time. (Caligiuri and Tarique, 2008).  All challenges can be deal with many solutions and leaders should evaluate which is the proper approach for each challenges.   In the same way, employees should improve themselves along with receiving feedback from leaders simultaneously.  

To sum up, the most essential challenge for managers and/or leaders in cross-cultural firms tend to be the communication from different people which come from different culture.  These diversity can cause problems because people might want to take their time to understand another colleague which grown-up in different backgrounds.  Even these challenge seem to difficult to solve but there always has the solutions,  generally for the leaders to act like a guide and it would be even better if they have the ability to analyze the situation effectively, and as staffs themselves should develop their potentials from individual observation as well.  Furthermore, not only these challenges manager might face but also other general problems such as how to motivation employees and find the proper solutions to inspire and develop their team to work in efficiency ways.  Therefore, in cross-cultural organization which contain many different kind of culture they tend to use different languages as well. All employees have a tendency to do not understand another group that have not the same background knowledges, but it is good for all managers to set and form their team to think and work in the same way even they com from the different places.  Imagine that one multicultural team work in the same task and can come up with many different idea.  Definitely,
