Bill Gates was born as William Henry Gates the 3rd. He was born on October twenty eighth 1955 in in Seattle, Washington and is the age of 63 in the year of 2018. He is a computer programmer who is the co-founder of Microsoft. Gates created the world’s largest PC software company called Windows by Microsoft. “His father was a prominent lawyer while his mother served on the board of directors for First Interstate Banc System and the United Way” (TheFamousPeople). It was at the age of 13 that Gates found an interest in computing.
Gates attended Lakeside school when he wrote his first software program. He had written a program that computerized his high school’s payroll system. Gates graduated high school in 1973 and was a National Merit Scholar that scored a 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT. Gates was later enrolled at Harvard College. Later on, in 1975 Gates dropped out of school with his Friend Paul Allen to start up a business called (Micro-Soft).
There initial idea with (Micro-Soft) later called Microsoft was to write popular programming language for use on microcomputers. “In 1980, the duo was approached by International Business Machine (IBM) with a proposal that Microsoft write the BASIC interpreter for IBM’s upcoming personal computer, the IBM PC. Microsoft created the PC DOS operating system which they delivered to IBM in exchange for a one-time fee of $50,000” (TheFamousPeople). Soon later the operating system became very popular and was named Windows on November 20th, 1985, just ten years after they started their business. “Over the following years Windows came to dominate the world’s personal computer market acquiring over 90% market share” (TheFamousPeople). The company was expanding greatly, and the software was being used for offices and big corporations. It was later in 1989 when Microsoft came out with new software called Microsoft Office.
In 1989 Bill Gates met Melinda French working at Microsoft. The got to know each other and began to get closer over a period of time. It was in 1994 that Bill and Melinda got married. Soon after the Gates had three kids: Phoebe, Jennifer and Rory Gates. Together Bill and Melinda started a foundation in 2000 called the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation or the Gates Foundation. “It is the largest private foundation in the world and aims to enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty worldwide” (TheFamousPeople). The Gates Foundation is focused on improving people's health and giving them a second chance to get them out of poverty and hunger. There are currently approximately 1.5 thousand employees working for the Gates Foundation. The foundation trust endowment is $50.7 billion.
Bill Gates and not just like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates has given so much away to charity and is so generous. He started his own charity and has given away an approximately 28 billion dollars. At the end of Gates life, he wants to have given away ninety-nine percent of his money away to charity. Bill Gates is very generous and caring and that is why he is my role model.
Bill Gates has many great Leadership traits such as he's constantly focused on the company approaches. “Bill Gates, on the other hand, focused on the one thing that he has mastery over – software” (Joseph Chris). One of Gates greatest leadership traits is that he is charismatic, he cares about not only his employees and family but people all across the world. Gates started The Gates Foundation solely because of his wealth. Gates has donated over 20 billion dollars as of 2018. “Along with Warren Buffet, Bill and Melinda Gates were the founders of the giving pledge, a pledge taken by some of the world’s wealthiest people to give the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes or charitable organizations. Gates once said “I hope you will reflect on what you’ve done with your talent and energy. I hope you will judge yourselves not on your professional accomplishments alone, but also on how well you work to address the world’s deepest inequities, on how well you treat people a world away who have nothing in common with you but their humanity” (Bloomberg Businessweek)(Farnaz Hedayati). The Gates family and friends have contributed a great amount to help the ones in need. Gates has a transformational leadership style because he has introduced many great changes to Microsoft. It because of Gates that the computing industry has transformed so greatly.
Bill Gates approach was effective because he did what he loved since he was young. The reason he has become so successful is due to his passion for computers and his great leadership style. If it wasn't for his fascination for computers, we wouldn't have the advancement that we are using now such as Microsoft Word which the paper is written on.
“Bill Gates greatest weakness is change. His biggest weakness has always been "dealing with the hiring issues, the management issues," says Gates. "I always have to get other people to come in and help ... build up the team”. Chances are, like Gates, you're not going to be enthusiastic about or particularly good at every single aspect of running a company. That's where hiring smart people, with a variety of skills and strengths, comes in.” (Kathleen Elkins). Gates weakness seems to be change. It maybe because of having to trust new employees, could have something to do with wasting time having to train them and then seeing how loyal they are to the company.
Everyone can be a leader. However, not everyone can be a good leader. “Bill Gates was one of those people who were considered as "Good Leaders". He had certain star qualities that made people like him, that made him slowly develop his company into one of the biggest companies in the world” (A Great Leader). These were qualities Gates possessed. Gates was honest, and he didn't lie about things he did. Gates has never been known for his public talks, but he does have a very good way of drawing people into the conversation, as evident in his TED talk” (A Great Leader). Gates is truly great at communicating and getting his message across. “Bill Gates has a great sense of humor, and that is what makes him a great communicator” (A Great Leader). To be a great at getting an audience's attention having a sense of humor can come in handy especially if you are Mr. Gates talking about computers constantly. “Bill Gates stayed committed to his team until 2000 when he dropped out to focus on his charity work. Instead, he just oversees Microsoft while Steve Ballmer manages it” (A Great Leader). Gates doesn't only care about himself he is not a self-centered billionaire. Gates and his family have a foundation for giving to the ones in need solely to know that they have helped millions. It's not only for the publicity it’s to make a difference in the world. “Gates was very determined to make things work, overcoming obstacles and reaching his goals. Bill gates kept a positive attitude up to motivate himself” (A Great Leader).
Bill Gates has demonstrated that he has great leadership skills and traits to be a very successful business man. Gates is a great role model because of his many traits to becoming successful. Gates has shown his great leadership through his decisions and dedications to run a company from the ground up. From starting the company from $50,000 dollars and transforming it into $96 Billion dollars over forty-three years shows his true dedication to the company. Gates was successful solely because he knew what the industry wanted, and he knew how to make it better. He started off making computer software and then operating systems to computers. His huge success with his business is due to his intelligence and inventiveness. His company and products have changed the world, for the better. Could you imagine what computers and software would be like right now if it was not for Gates. He revolutionized the computer software industry.
Bill Gates doesn’t care if he is the richest man alive or famous, his goal is to try to help others and he became very successful. After all of the hardworking of making computers, he still finds ways to earn money to help the people who are in need. Bill Gates is the person who I think is the best leader and I will always walk their way.
