India is gifted with large quantity of iron ore with high ferrous content, which is the crucial raw material for producing the steel. Hence India is one of the largest producers of Steel in the world.

With the help of liberalization, globalization of economy in the process, there is as scope for economic development, with means there will be focus on infrastructure. This will lead to considerable demand for steel.  As its main applications are in the construction Engineering and automobile sectors, which are the key elements in building  infrastructure, Steel is universe  intermediate and  has very strong forward  linkages hence steel industry has become one the core sector of the economy.

Though India is one of the large steel producers, it has low percent consumption of Steel in comparison with developed countries. India is fortunate in having intensive iron ore deposits with estimated at 10.3Billion, which is more than 1/4th of the world reserves. Further the average iron ore content of India ore is above 60% in India, the iron ore reserves are mainly found in the states like Orissa, Karnataka, Bihar, M.P. Goa, A.P., Rajasthan and some parts of western Maharashtra.

When, we think of the steel Industry, the first thing that comes in to our mind is our mind is pig iron. This is because of its name. When metal from blast furnace is paired in to Moulds and solidifies it assumes a shape which resembles the back of a pig, hence called as pig Iron.


Before liberalization the pig iron industry was monopolized by the Integral Steel plants to utilize the liberalization policy initiated by the Government of India. Decline in the pig iron production and paved the way of helping the ISP’s be utilize pig iron for Making steel to gain iron value addition.

The Integrated Steel Plant (ISP) is the major supplier of pig iron. Public Contributes up to 90% of the Pig Iron supply. According to the Steel Ministry report, demand for pig iron is estimated to increase by 37% over next 8 years.

Steel – a versatile commodity, most widely used metal in the world, forms a core Constituent of all major economies. Accordingly, Steel Consumption is a derivative of the growth pattern of its various end – use sectors viz., Manufacturing, Housing, Infrastructure, Automobile etc., that ultimately steel the country’s economy.

The steel industry is believed to have been operating at around 90 % capacity utilization factor in 2004. As per International Iron and steel Institute estimates, global steel demand has increased by around 8.8%.  The strongest increase in steel consumption was recorded in North America (+15%) while the rest of the OECD India steel industry is almost 100 years old now. Till 1990, the Indian steel industry operated under a regulated environment with insulated and large –scale capacities reserved for the public sector.

Production prices were determined and regulated by GOI. The steel sector was Deregulated in 1991-92, when control on capacity and prices were abolished along with Quantitative trade restrictions. Import tariffs were also brought down substantially. In 2000-01. The Indian steel industry operated at finished steel production level of 26.7 million tonnes with apparent finished steel consumption at 26.9 million tonnes.

  Today, India produces steel of international standards conforming to almost all grades and varieties and has been a net exporter for the past few years, which shows the growing


The union budget proposals of finance minister Pranab Mukherjee will indirectly boost the overall demand for steel. In particular, the decision to raise outlay on urban development and housing by 75% to Rs 5,400 crore and an additional 25% of plan outlay for rural infrastructure, has come as a shot in the arm for domestic steel companies.


The budget proposals will lead to a hike in excise rates from 8 to 10% which is slated to make steel costlier. \"This step was largely factored in by the industry,\" Mr.Surekha of ISPAT Industries said. Also, the proposed clean energy cess of Rs 50 per tonne on coal will lead to a hike in steel companies’ coal bill. In case of Sail, it will lead to an additional burden of Rs.50-100 crore.

Ministry of Steel, while reviewing the investment scenario in the steel sector has made an assessment that the steel production capacity in the country is likely to be130.06 million tonnes by the year 2015-16.


The Indian steel industry can be divided into two distinct producer groups:

1) Major producers:  Integrated steel producers (ISPs) includes large steel producers      with  high level of backward integration and capacities of over 1 MT .steel authority of India  limited.

(SAIL), Tata steel RashtriyaISpat Nigam limited (RINL),JSW steel limited (JSWSL), Essar steel limited (Essar) and  ISPAT industries limited (ISPAT)from this group SAIL, TISCO RINL produce Steel using the blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace (BF/BOF) route that uses iron ore, coal/coke has the basic input mix for producing finished steel, Essar and ISpat employ Electric ARC Furnace (EAF) route that uses sponge iron , melting scrape or  a mix of both as Input and JSWSL uses COREX, a revolutionary technology for making steel using basically iron –ore and coal.

2) Other producers:   This group consists of smaller stand –alone steel plants that include Producers and processors of steel.

 Processors /enrollers: Units producing small quantities of steel (flat/long products) from materials procured from the market or through their own backward integration System.

 Stand-alone units making pi iron and sponge iron.

 Small producers using scrap – sponge iron combination produce steel ingots (for long products)

The Steel Industry, in general, is on the upswing, due to strong growth in demand propelled particularly by the demand for steel in china. The world scenario coupled with strong domestic has benefited the Indian Steel Industry.

The brainchild of the Late Udaychand Singh, Bharat Mines and Minerals, was incorporated to supply Iron Ore to MMTC. In 1998, his son, Mr. Dinesh Kumar Singh steered the company to unparalleled growth by being the first mining company, establishing a power generation plant for captive use, and creating a steel plant from the captive ore mine. His youthfulness and dynamism reflected in the company\'s significant consistent growth in a span of 7 years with an aim to make about half a million tons of steel by 2009-10.

Bharath mines and minerals has been promoted by Late Sri. Udaychand Singh, who first ventured in manufacturing and supplying implements through mines and minerals business and was instrumental in setting up a Bharath mines and minerals. After acquiring varied experience in mines and minerals for about 15 years, Sri Udaychand Singh in 1979 thought it appropriate to go for backward integration and he set up a new industry called “Bharath mines and minerals Limited” shortly known as “BMM” in the year 1979. The use of QTB technical parameters of bar

The steel plant setup in 2006 as per BMM\'S aspirations now produces 75,000 TMT bars annually. BMM ISPAT LTD manufactures high strength Thermo Mechanical Treatment steel bars for concrete reinforcement, which are internationally competitive and highly ductile for safety in structures. Steel for TMT bars are fully kilned in a furnace. The molten steel is void of slag with the inclusion of argon gas. The chemistry and temperature is homogenized to ensure uniform composition. The liquid steel is then tapped into the CONCAST (continue costing machine)

CONCAST Through a combination of primary and secondary solidification, the liquid steel is cast into billets. Automation and controlled heat transfer ensures their good quality.

The TMT Bars that BMM manufactures are in different sizes ranging from 8 mm to 32 mm as per the customer specification.

By-Products: -

1. Creating possibilities in POWER


An idea for a power plant was conceived in 2005 and executed in a span of 17 months. Company has put up a thermal plant for captive usage which meets 80% of the total requirement of 31 MW.

Infrastructure The 25 MW plant consists of turbine backed by one atmospheric fluidized bed combustion boiler and 2 waste heat recovery boilers. The company has installed one atmospheric fluidized bed combustion (AFBC) boiler of 95 tons per hour (TPH) and 2 waste heat recovery boiler of 10 tons per hour (TPH) capacity.


The pellets are one of the byproducts of BMM. The pellets are the small (round shaped) iron ore which are to be used to convert them into sponge iron. The input for this is the high grade ore that is processed from the beneficiation plant through wet process. The pellets are majorly used for internal usage i.e. for the next process sponge iron. But also these pellets are externally sold.


The sponge iron is one of the byproducts of BMM Ispat Ltd and is manufactured for internal usage as well as sold externally. The sponge iron is manufactured through the DRI (Direct Reduction of Iron) process.


Location of the Company:

‘Bharath mines and minerals’ is located on the Hospet on the Danapur-Chitradurga about 13 Kilometers from the city Hospet, in the North – East state of Karnataka.

BMM ISPAT LTD, HOSPET is strategically located 300km west of Hospet & almost equidistant from Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mangalore & Goa. Hospet is well connected by road & rail. The BMM plant is located a plot of land about 5 Acres.

The plant is in some long proximity to the Hospet Railway station & as well as RTC.HOSPET is also ideally located near the major power generation stations, both Hydro & Thermal like Raichur, Munirabad, and Bhadravathi & Kalinandhi. All these stations are connected to the grid at Munirabad (about 8 Kms from HOSPET) the grid also receives power from the Ramagudam, Thermal station. BMM plant hasn’t ever experienced any shortage of energy so far & the quality of power supply by virtue of its closeness to the grid is of a high order.

 Being one of the few exporters to have a plot for stacking and holding ore in Margao and Chennai ports, BMM also operates from Panjim, Kakinada, Karwar and Mangalore.

Cardiology, Orthopaedic, Neurology, Urology & Gynaecology specialist participated & given treatment. 496 patients tested & treated. 11 major disease patients identified & referred for major treatment & surgery at Sagar hospital Bengaluru for free of cost.

Provides school bus to surrounding villages

 BMM Ispat Limited provided 4 school buses for surrounding the rural area villages under CSR activities.  

It’s started on 1st June2015. Approximately 240 students benefited for this service. Now they were in timely reaches their respective schools.

 On dated 15.06.2015 Donated cheque Rs.33500/-  towards higher education to poor & intelligent student Mr. SameerBhasha C, given by Mr.Sri VVV Raju, Chief Finance Officer, Sri Lakshminarayana,Chief General Manager & Laisoning & Company officials at Administrative office.

 Under CSR activities,  June 3rd   week  of 2016,  we were distributed Note books for  Company surrounding Villages  School students. 20 Villages of 23 Schools covered this programme, 4366 students received 17946 note books.

Work Flow Model:-

The process of manufacturing the TMT Bars includes the following Sequential steps;


The process involved in this stage can be explained briefly as follows:

The run of mine Iron Ore is crushed and screened with the help of the crushing and screening systems. The screened fines are stocked in the silos for the next process. The screened fines are subjected to scrubbing followed by wet screening. The screen underflow is put into the hydro cyclones for cycloning and cyclone underflow is put into the spiral section for gravity separation.

The screen oversize material is ground in the primary ball and pumped back to the wet screen. The cyclone rejects are put into the tailing thickener. The spiral tailings are subjected to the magnetic separator through HGMS (High Gradient Magnetic Separator).

The HGMS will be transferred to the concentrate thickener and the tailing to the tailing thickener. The concentrate is subjected to the Ball Mill for finer grinding to meet the pelletisation size requirement.


The rolled products of an integrated steel plant fall into two categories, flats and non flats. Sheets and plates belong to the first category. Construction steel like angles, channels, I-beams, wide flange beams, special sections such as zees and tees, wires, bars and rods belong to non flat category.

BMM Ispat has the rolling mill plant which produces the TMT bars from billets into various sizes from 8mm to 32mm as per the requirements.
