Technology had a very big evolution and therefore a bigger impact on society, which often cannot keep up with such evolution. Overall, the time spent on social networking sites exceed the time spent on e-mail, and the number of social networking users exceed the number of e-mail users. Today, social networking sites are the platform for all kind of activities, to business or personal, and sociability has radically increased.

The impact on society and politics – Today, human beings have a very useful tool, called the computer technology that allows search and find information that is needed very easily. The internet is present in our days as a huge encyclopaedia, where any information is made available, free of charges, many times that you want and it´s available to everyone. With the appearance of search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bling ... The research of information has become simpler and effective. Intended content of simple keyword research offers a huge amount of web pages, where the user can go after the choice he want. As the internet plays a greater role in government, campaigns and activism, the debate continues about how social and digital media are altering the policy. Continuing research is addressing issues like if whether or not the internet is leading to increased political polarization, the tendency of like-minded individual to group even closer together in their habits and views. Although there is an increasing in scepticism about the true meaning of social media behaves on a large scale in conditions of its tangible impact for campaigns, since critics point out that journalists are not sufficiently keeping up with the new and effective campaign tactics. According to what I read in source1.

Throughout in the last few years, it becomes a common tool at the workplace. Companies from various areas were quick to embrace the opportunities and potential that internet has to offer and put them to good use to accomplish their goals. But on the other hand, despite having contributed to the efficiency of employees, by allow them to have immediate access to information on a variety of topics and facilitating communication all over the world, as well contribute to encounter preoccupations for employers. Initial investigations stated that the use of the internet for personal reasons during working hours had negative impact on productivity. The reason for this was that, employees would be wasting time thus possibly making them unproductive and with this time they could use to further their work. However recent research has shown that internet to be quite valuable to productivity. Studies show that not only is the internet a priceless tool which aids workers to accomplish their designated tasks, but also, when used logically, allows those who are working to have moments of repose. This helps to improvement in concentration and in productivity. Due to the ambiguity present in articles and works in Portugal, a decision was made to base this thesis on the impact of internet usage on productivity. The results taken from the study done by means of a questionnaire, through a convenience sample, from elements of the working population in Portugal, have shown that the internet, when used for leisure purpose, does not have an impact on productivity.

Global impact – The humankind is now almost entirely connected with the internet, albeit with great levels of inequality in bandwidth, efficiency and price. People, companies and institutions are feeling the depth of the changes of technology, but for example, the media often report that the extreme use of internet increase the possibility of loneliness. But more recently studies said that, it actually increases sociability, civic engagement, and concentration of family and friendship or relationships, in all cultures. Our current network society is a product of digital revolution and some major socio cultural changes. One is the rise of me-centered society, marked by a bigger focus on individual growth and a decline in community understood in terms of space, work, family, and a description in general. The technologies have created in global society several consequences since the creation of computers implementing the internet both positive and negative. The growth of technology networks have been causing alterations in the mode that society live, work and communicate. The development of these technologies has been significant to the point that the society is not able to follow up. However using these technologies implies a rapid adaptation. Which groups of people get the most and least usage of the internet? And why? Starting with the countries which use more internet and because it is one of the country with more population is China with about 604 million internet users and the percentage of the population is 45.8% and in second and third place is India, and United States and Portugal in this list is found in 48 place according to what I read in “Wikipedia”. And in terms of age, the average age that most uses internet is 29 years old, an age when the internet was born with them, and people on their 60 and 70 years old have difficulties to adapt it to new technologies.

The effect or impact of the internet in business – Nowadays any media company or large dimension makes use of the computer technology for a better performance. Nowadays technologies help companies mainly in the organization and archiving documents or business processes, and also used for marketing and design, presentations of projects and video call meetings. Such as international meetings that can be made through Skype which is a social network that makes video calls and conferences that helps companies meeting easily, quickly and faster and can instead of travelling save money, beside Skype we have more social networks or apps that are useful in this cases, the technology allows business to automate manual operations and information processing much faster and internet has formed an entire business function normally referred to as e-business or e-commerce. E-business is the use of the internet and business technology in company´s operations. An important feature of an e-business is the ability to correspond and transfer information through the internet. Many businesses use e-mail servers that allow managers and employees to send messages or internal information via e-mail. Companies have also developed business websites that allow consumers to review information about the company and its products. The internet has also allowed businesses to get ways to reduce operating and capital costs in the economy of production of goods or services. Companies often implement business software to control various business operations and assess the efficiency and effectiveness of each department. These business software packages help information managers in a real-time evaluation format and make better decisions or better knowledgeable about business efficiency. Many traditional business environments were not able to directly sell goods or services to consumers and other businesses.

These companies, such as manufacturing and producers of intermediate goods often need an intermediary to help sell products in the business environment. The internet allows this business to create websites or other electronic order system to sell products and generate a pipeline for future business sales, it is important to remember that the internet provides information and trade. The effects businesses still need to carefully examine the effects of the internet on international markets to understand whether or not an online presence is the right move. According to what I read in source5&6.

The impact on education, science and health – the internet can nowadays be very important for the study or science, why? Because it can help people in communication and knowledge production in, however it can also be used in education. Teachers today use it a lot for the classes to be less formal and have a communication between the professor and the student, the student will be benefited from a better apprenticeship. In science internet has impacted all industries in ways we could not explain, three decades ago. But during the last 15 years of change from hard copy to electronic file, the impact was felt mostly in science research and more recently emergence of networked science. Since the very early days of the printing press, science has been dependent upon the publishing industry to advance knowledge. In “global Sherpa studies” shows that more than 35% of all research papers published today document active international collaboration, a 40% increase from fifteen years ago. In 2000 digital versions of over eleven million research articles, documents and the first e-books became available and by the end of the first decade of the new century, the international sales growth for digital academic content exceeded printout. A more significant advance over the past five years has been the emergence of science networking. The idea that scientific content cannot, and should not exists in a vacuum. Some articles by different authors are now linked to banks of data sets, reference books, videos, presentations and audio tracks. Scientists and engineers representing a wide range of cross-cutting disciplines can discuss research results in online forums, and society will ultimately benefits from the resulting scientific discourse that will open new avenues unlimited for research and discovery. Today, it is expected that we create every day 2.5 quintillion bytes of data. According to IBM the data comes from all the places: satellites and sensors, social media, pictures and videos, transactions records, cell phone, GPS signal, etc. The emerging economies of China, India and Brazil the intensification of global competition and the need for the best and most reliable scientific research to address the world´s cross-border problems faced now will continue to fuel the new economy research. The resulting mass of big data will grow exponentially. Science and the publishing industry will need each other even more to help manage it. The internet use of technology in health sector presents numerous innovations every day that contribute not simply to a better management of the business of health operators but for medical services.
