According to the statistical analysis system, a project based in North Carolina for agricultural research. Artificial intelligence is a technology machines have that allow them to learn from experience, adjust to new inputs and perform human-like tasks. However, will artificial intelligence be able to replace humans? This technological advancement has given us the possibility to eradicate the need for humans in achieving tasks due every day and tasks in jobs. Artificial intelligence is posing a threat to jobs but is also providing opportunities that humans didn't have in the past.
The effect of artificial intelligence on unemployment
Artificial intelligence has a large potential in replacing a lot of jobs in the future. First, drivers could become redundant due to the rising innovation of self-driving cars. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, an intergovernmental economic organisation with 35-member countries, founded in 1961 to stimulate economic progress and world trade. Driverless cars could reduce the number of vehicles needed in a city by 90%. Furthermore Ernst & Young Global Limited, a multinational professional services firm headquartered in London, England. Believes that taxi drivers and truck drivers will disappear completely in the next 20 -30 years due to automation in cars. According to an estimate by Intel Corporation and Strategy Analytics, announced in June 2017, the economic effects of autonomous vehicles will total $7 trillion in 2050.
Secondly, recent studies by the Midwest Economic Policy Institute, a non-profit American think tank based in Washington, D.C. that carries out economic research estimates that by 2057 robots could replace or displace 2.7 million jobs in construction. Shimizu Corp, a leading architectural, civil engineering and general contracting firm is developing its own artificial intelligence systems, using robots made by Kuka Robotics of Germany. Furthermore, A new report conducted by the World Economic Forum, a Swiss nonprofit foundation, based in Cologny, Geneva, Switzerland. estimates that nearly half a million construction jobs will be taken by robots before 2020. Conclusively, provisions indicate that artificial intelligence technologies will win a battle between humans in the construction fields job opportunities in the future.
The effect of artificial intelligence on employment
According to Stephane Kasriel CEO of Upwork (2017) ‘AI and robotics will create more jobs, not mass unemployment — as long as we responsibly guide innovation'. Artificial intelligence might create jobs because; firstly, automation requires skills. Andy Peart (2017), chief strategy and marketing officer at Barcelona, Spain-based Artificial Solutions, believes that AI will potentially create different types of jobs which include creating algorithms, and promoting artificial intelligence that require new skill sets that will be developed through training.
Secondly, theoretically artificial intelligence will not replace humans' jobs that don't involve repetition. Rachel Russell, executive director of corporate strategy for Hanover, Md.-based Allegis Group - a talent solutions provider with over 500 locations across the globe and $11 billion in annual revenue believes that “ while some jobs will certainly be lost as AI takes on skills formerly attributed to humans, new jobs will also emerge (p.5)”. These jobs include AI trainer, data science supporters and capabilities related to modeling, computational intelligence, machine learning, mathematics, psychology, linguistics and neuroscience.
All in all, technological advancement in artificial intelligence has potential to create and destroy jobs in the future. However, as we are moving along an era of technological advancement, robots are the more practical option in areas of construction, driving and a job with repetitive routine. The creation of self driving cars delivering goods indicates what the future has to hold for us. According to the Global Insight Report (2016), if regulations allow, this revolutionary method of transport could be implemented to the society as early as 2020 (p.7). Which indicates that these artificial intelligence influenced technologies could be the normal. As such, the trend logically will not stop here. We are able to create teachers, nurses and medical experts from artificially intelligent robots.
