One and Done
Since 2006, there have been 100 plus NBA players that have only attended college for one year. The NBA is the most competitive basketball league to ever be known by men. With the competition getting more fierce as we speak, the 32 teams in the league are trying to get to the top but is the way they are doing that right? The NBA scouts are recruiting and pushing college basketball stars away from a degree and pulling them into the NBA. The rules regarding the one and done rule state a player has to meet the requirement of being at least 19 years of age. Personally, I feel that the college basketball players should have to attend college for four years and get a degree to be eligible to enter the NBA draft. The problem with the regulations the currently have are that players that finish their careers have no degree to get a job after they retire.
BleacherReport states, “It’s clear players have felt change is needed for some time, and the league may already have a viable plan to change the structure.”The one and done rule has been controversial ever since the rule has existed. The rules regarding the one and done are that a player that declares for the draft has to be over 19 years of age, but you can’t get a degree with only attending college for one year. The rules have been messed around with throughout the years but they have been the same for the past couple years. However, College Professors dislike the fact that players can just attend college for one year and then go pro. According to SECCountry.com,” However, the one-and-done makes a mockery of the collegiate system and the NBA should look into abolishing it.” I believe that all the college officials have the right to be disappointed in the NBAs decision to keeps the one and done era going.
I believe the one and done rule should be demolished. I really dislike the story behind the rule with it affecting the education of the athletes and the professors. The one and done rule allows players to attend college for one year then go pro at the age of 19. I feel the rule can deny college basketball studs of there education because of all the pressure by NBA scouts and NBA fans of declaring for the draft. If the one and done rule would get abolished, the process of going to the NBA for college basketball prospects will be less stressful and more enjoyable. JJ Redick is one of the many NBA players that dislikes the rules. Redick states,” If you're good enough to play, then you should be in the NBA.” Most of the players in the NBA go by the quote and that why they are there. The NBA veterans aren’t the only ones that dislike the rule, even the rookies believe the rule of attending college for one year doesn’t make sense. Ben Simmons, front runner for rookie of the year, quotes, “Simmons said his one year of college served little purpose.
With most NBA players agreeing the one and done rule is uneducated, the NBA should at least look into changing the rule to make it less complicated. The bucks GM states, "You've got a G-League franchise that's an hour-and-a-half away for us — and by the way that franchise is running the same offense and defense schemes as we are, they have the same medical staff philosophy, performance philosophy as we have," This shows that even the GM’s of the NBA dislike the decision of the one and done rule. I feel that the NBA should bump up the age requirement from 19 years of age to 22 years of age. This rule change could make an impact on college athletes wanting to go pro without having to stress about going to college for 4 more years after their careers, but instead only attending for one year. This would be a plus for both NBA and colleges because the rule has been manufactured to fit the expectations of the athletes. I believe this would be a win-win for everybody involved such as the NBA players, the NBA GM’s, and the college officials with the option cause there is nothing that could go wrong but there are many upsides to the decision. To be honest, why wouldn’t the NBA at least try to change the rule, they could make a different impression on the viewers from home or even at the arena.
If you want an example of fierce competition, the NBA is a great example. The one problem surrounding the NBA is the one and done rule. The one and done rule affects college athletes because it pressures the players from going away from their education and pushing them into entering the NBA. I feel like at this point in the process, people have the right to say that players that are getting ready to enter the NBA draft are just entering the NBAs trap. The college athletes should know what they are getting into ahead of time. In my mind, the NBA is still a center of entertainment but this proves that even the most entertaining things can still have faults in them. With all the controversy storming the one rule, the college basketball athletes should take note and look closer on the details before signing the contract and being a part of the NBA until they are prepared.
