The American Dream
Have you ever imagine your own American Dream. If you do, how do you imagine it? There are people out in the world seeking for the American Dream to live a great life as freedom with money and extravagant things. The American Dream is told as clothing, luxurious items, money, and most importantly love. In the 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald is what we picture in our minds, but if we dig deep inside the Great Gatsby there are crushed dreams and overcoming feelings but failed to make it. The past and the present will remind Jay Gatsby American Dream consisted and consist of, living hopeless, lonely, and even all the money that he has.
Mr. Gatsby would throw parties every day and he would have random people coming over to celebrate for no reason, He says “Do you come to these parties often” (Fitzgerald 43)? What I think about the American Dream is that you can live your life as a freedom to do what you want in life. You can make money, travel the world, have a family, fancy cars, owning a business, falling in love, and so much more. The American Dream is an amazing experience to imagine and try to meet. Jay Gatsby would throw outrageous parties and waste so much money on parties at his house that he does not attend to (43). Jay Gatsby is the man who went to live his life during the war in the 1920s and continued his life attending to Oggsford college in England (72). He said “ Have you know Gatsby for a long time?.. “Several years,” he answered in a gratified way (Fitzgerald 72).
As a living, the American Dream things do not goes as planned. You have all the money in the world living the best life than in people mind, they want to just switch things up and ruin it. The power of the mind is crazy you can decide what to do today, tomorrow, or the next day, basically any day. She said “Are you in love with me,” she said low in my ear, “or why did I have to come alone” (Fitzgerald 85)? It was about her hiding from people and Daisy didn’t want anyone to know that she is secretly dating that is why she is hiding from people (85). Daisy told her chauffeur “Come back in an hour Ferdie” (Fitzgerald 85). It shows proof that Daisy is hiding things. She made Ferdie to come back in hour so she can do some business with her man (85). I believe she can’t decide which man she wants because she keeps going back.
In the American Dream money is all about it. Myrtle and George are low income couple that lives off decent but they are not like Gatsby, Daisy, and Jordan. Myrtle and George do not live the life they wanted. Myrtle wants to be treated and do better in life. The wealthy people in the story do not understand how the poor do it and they aren't in reality. Myrtle married Wilson because she had a husband and she was not treated well “Well, I married him,” said Myrtle. “And that’s the difference between your case and mine, I married him because he is a gentlemen, I thought he knew something about breeding but he wasn’t fit to lick my shoe” (Fitzgerald 112). Myrtle thought George was a man with money and smartness but she later founds out she not about that lifestyle that george had. George would not do anything for her when she said “he wasn’t fit to lick my shoe” (Fitzgerald 112). Myrtle was eager to leave her husband, George. She did not like it at all but George would stop her from leaving (112).
We all put dedication in a woman that might like us back but it is confusing to tell. Mr. Gatsby tried to hard to get Daisy. He had a dream to live together happily in a big mansion, living life together with no problems, maybe starting a family. Gatsby knew that Daisy is the one, “He stretched out his arm toward the dark water...I…. distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away… When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished” (Fitzgerald 60). Gatsby knew what the green light means and he did not wanna talk about it, so he disappear away (60). As though Gatsby bought a house across the bay to see Daisy everyday. Which Jordan said to them “Gatsby bought that house so Daisy would be just across the bay”(Fitzgerald 151). Gatsby is thinking to talk to Daisy and try to make a chemistry between them two. Gatsby put investment in one woman to try to fall in love with. Mr. Gatsby is striving for his dream to have her in his life (151).
In conclusion, Fitzgerald illustrated us the American Dream as something that is rare and could not be changed. He showed us the belief in the American Dream there is a good and a bad, but life as the American Dream is not as always go as planned.
