About 60% of water is present in the human body. Salt is an electrolyte that helps to maintain an optimal level of fluids in the body. For having a proper blood circulation in the body, one needs to consume a little amount of salt every day. When people who eat a lot of salty foods cut down on their intake of salt for diet or other health reasons, then the craving for salt occurs. Sometimes, there are also certain medical conditions that would get an individual to crave for salt.
The American Heart Association or AHA recommends that a human being must have less than 1500 mg of sodium per day. A study by The New England Journal of Medicine showed that people who consumed more than 6000 mg a day had an increased risk of cardiovascular events and mortality. People who consumed a moderate amount of salt in the 3000 to 6000 mg range had low heart related events.
There are a lot of ways and means by which craving of salt can be cut down. The first step to do is to drink a lot of water. Drinking water leads to the body being hydrated always, which would help one to consume less amount of salt. Celery juice is yet another healthy way if one is looking forward to stop their salt cravings. Lime is said to bring a sour taste in the meal, and this would help one to end their salt cravings. Instead of salt, herbs and other substitutes can be used in the cooking that would add an extra flavor to the meal. This would help a lot to curb the craving for salt.
A research by Dr. Robin Felder and team from the University of Virginia stated that about 25% of the people experienced very high blood pressure on high salt diets, while only 11% people experienced high blood pressure on low salt diets. This is to implement that high blood pressure has a lot of negative impact on the health of a person. When the salt intake is above the recommended measure, it creates a lot of unhealthy issues in the body. Some opt for a no-salt method of cooking which is proven to be effective. Try to bring down the content of salt intake little by little. Avoid foods with more than 200 mg of sodium per serving, which can help a long way in the curbing of salt desire.
Studies from the Cancer Research UK shows that too much of salt consumption can lead to stomach cancer. Salty foods can cause damage to the stomach lining through inflammation, or make it more sensitive to cancer causing chemicals. This is one of the reasons why people must stop their salt craving as it is dangerous to their health. When your salt intake everyday gets lesser, it becomes easy to handle health conditions better.
