Dhirubhai Ambani possessed a very unique style of working and leadership skills that were totally unparalleled. It was his sharp acumen and business sense that helped Reliance grow from a Rs 640 million company to a Rs 620 billion multi-giant in 2002. Some of the key work values that his career reflects are as follows:

  • Dhirubhai Ambani possessed Laissez-Faire leadership style. He was a visionary and had complete confidence on the decisions that he took. Even when the times were tough for the privately owned institutions, he had the guts to raise capital from the public. This reflects his risk taking ability and also the sense of trust he had on his employees.

  • As per the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), he was an Intuitive and a Perceiving person and it was evident from the fact that he was very quick to sense the opportunities and flexible to switch his business, if there was a scope for it. He was very quick to realize the scope of textiles industry and swiftly switched to it from the spices industry. This reflects his Sense of Openness.

  • Dhirubhai knew that to build a strong brand image, his focus on superior quality of fabric was going to play an integral role. If we talk on Rokeach Value Survey terms, he possessed very high Instrumental values such as responsibility, capability and ambitiousness. Whenever there was some legal trouble in Reliance, he always took the responsibility and always lead from the front. Being a visionary and someone who always dreamt big, his Terminal values were concentrated on financial freedom and a sense of accomplishment.

  • Though he entered the workforce during the Socialist era, his work style emerged more of as a Liberal style of work. In fact, it was Dhirubhai and Reliance who brought an early entry of liberalism in the Indian industry. He possessed key work values such as achievement-oriented, ambitious, tech-savvy and someone who was ready to challenge the fixed government standards.

  • He also displayed sharp people skills which helped him build his business and political connections. As per Holland’s Typology, he was a perfect example of Enterprising personality as he was able to influence others and build his network and at the same time hold his power.

  • Even when there were a lot of allegations against Dhirubhai and Reliance, he stayed rock solid and did not let Reliance break into pieces. He showed immense perseverance and strength during that time, which also kept the spirits of the stakeholders and the employees high.

Q2. Does the Reliance Group/s, as they stand today, reflect the values of Dhirubhai’s legacy? How?

Dhirubhai Ambani had a profound influence on not just Reliance but to the country’s economy as well. He has truly left behind a legacy that is strong and powerful. It is because of such a strong and forever legacy that Reliance still enjoys the trust of its stakeholders and public and stands strong at 121st rank in Forbes list with a market cap of $50.6 Billion. It is because of the acumen and public connections of Dhirubhai, that Reliance is still growing strong even after his demise. He groomed his sons to take care of Reliance and its daily operations. Both, Mukesh and Anil Ambani reflect the skills that Dhirubhai had imbibed in them and the quality to always think big.

Dhirubhai always held all the stakeholders and the customers of Reliance bounded together and did not let anyone fall apart even when the company was going through a tough phase. Today, though there is a dispute prevailing between the two brothers over ownership issues and the united Reliance group has been split into various divisions. Both the brothers have divided their departments, still one thing that remains same is the growth of each subsidiary. It has been possible just because of the training that they received from Dhirubhai. The split of the industries between the two brothers was almost equal and rational, which retained the trust of shareholders on Reliance. This is the reason that even after the split, the legacy of Dhirubhai still continues to expand.
