Property management has always interested me and will be a definite career path that I pursue after I graduating. I would like to work for an estate agent to gain experience and knowledge of the property management sector. One of my life goals is to own and manage my own property successfully so that I create a comfortable lifestyle.
Resilience is the ability to be able to adapt to situations which put you out of your comfort zone. Such as a person who has excellent resilience is able to bounce back from setbacks whereas a person without resilience could crumble under the pressure of a new environment or new responsibilities. When I first started the careers management series, I knew of resilience and what surrounds it but now, I understand how resilience can be gained and what is needed to stay resilient. To be able to gain resilience you have to look at everything with a more positive attitude. For instance, usually, people who find something difficult either give up but if that person has resilience they are going to look at like a challenge and not give up to they have completed it. This displays commitment which is another skill said to be needed to gain resilience. Commitment is very healthy to keep up because it allows you to keep a clear head when in a working environment due to not overworking or stressing about completing work. A resilient person will tend to treat setbacks more momentary than a permanent because they are adequate to understand why the setback happened and create a strong solution to overcome it so that it doesn’t happen again. This is also known as permanence which is a trait of resilient people. It’s also going to be very prominent in property management because they are going to be setbacks on a daily basis which I need to be able to tackle. For example, I have some foundation issues with a property, I need to quickly contact building companies to complete the work while providing housing options for my tenants. I need to develop my resilience skills further by focusing on finding out everything which I need to complete, construct a clear plan explaining when tasks should be started and when they should be completed by.
Communication is an exchange of information between two parties or more. It can be one way or both sides offering useful information for free or at a price.  Communication is highly relevant to every single job, it could even be needed more in property management due to the day to day tasks. For instance, sorting out viewings with tenants to view properties or communicating with current tenants about issues with the property and what can be done to increase their quality of living. Throughout the careers management series, effective communication has been fundamental part because the lecturers have been able to teach and show parts of the course so that everybody can understand clearly. Due to my experiences throughout life, such as jobs in the food industry and high street retail, I have been able to learn how to effectively communicate with peers and customers to a certain level. But the careers management series has heightened my communication skills further allowing me to excel more within group work especially. I used to struggle with group work because I’d not want to share in case my ideas and theories were not to the right standard of everyone else but now I enjoy group work and feel that I can be an efficient team member.  Even though I feel like I have come along way, I am going to have to increase my communication skills when I leave university to adapt to a new working environment. I am going to arrange a drop in sessions with my personal tutor to develop my understanding of the working environment I will be going into.
Leadership has been the most prominent skill out of all within career management series which could be because I know that I need it for my future. Savickas 4 C’s are a perfect example of leadership due to the fact that each C displays an aspect of it. If a leader can be concerned and calm they are able to prepare better for what’s in the future of the business. This is will also be extremely important within property management because, without it, I wouldn’t be able to make crucial decisions that could result in large costs. For example, if I am viewing a possible new property and I am concerned at the amount of mold in the all the rooms, I might be skeptical to want to buy knowing that I am going to have increased costs already. Control could be the most important C since it is one of the main roles and being in control of difficult situations shows a good leader. In my opinion, you cannot even start to lead if you do not have confidence because you will struggle to motivate your employees or colleagues. Without confidence, you are not capable enough of leading them to achieve the goals and aims of the company due to the difficulty of inspiring the workforce. Lastly, Curiosity allows a leader to precisely layout stages which need to be completed to be able to reach the goals of the business. It forces employees and leaders out of their comfort zone because of its motivation to complete tasks successfully. Personally, I have always wanted to lead and have found it easier to lead than follow. Last year, I lead my team across Ten Tors to complete the 35-mile race coming second down to injury. This enhanced my skills greatly due to training courses we were sent on and the 6 weekends of training on Dartmoor. I had to motivate my team regularly due to the length of the race and set smaller distance goals to show my team that every step they toke meant that we were one step closer to finishing. To augment my leadership skills further, I would need to use the universities resources such as the hundreds of business books or speak to my current careers lecturer.
The careers management series has complimented my skills and strengthened them to be even more workplace appropriate. After everything is completed, I will now be in a better position to apply to be an estate agent and own my own property in the future. The personal development plan has shown me how my skills have come along and how they can be increased by using the university’s resources.
