My Ideal Leadership Team and its Dynamics
The ideal team that I enjoy working on, is an organizational work force. I have learned about this work force in previous assignments. Something about having a leader on a team is just very important to me. In order for an organizational work force to function, the work force, or team itself needs to figure out the dynamics of the team. Some examples of team dynamics would be, forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. These dynamics can happen if there is a leader who sets goals and has vision, and learns and practices skills.
Ideal Team
My ideal team involves an organizational work force. This type of organization has a leader, sort of like a manager. This leader helps his employees achieve goals. The leader is responsible for getting the best out of each team member and has to be there to support them. A manager cannot doubt his or her team members. A leader can bring constant encouragement thus creating a positive atmosphere. When you have a positive atmosphere, your team members are more likely to cooperate with each other, and then in turn want to do the best they can, as efficiently as they can for their manager or leader. This creates a successful work environment, and team members become more likely to accomplish deadlines, and get things done the right way.
Team Dynamics
“Team dynamics are the unconscious, psychological forces that influence the direction of a team’s behavior and performance. They are like undercurrents in the sea, which can carry boats in a different direction to the one they intend to sail.” (Myers, 2013) “Some examples of team dynamics would be, forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning.” (Wiemels, 2014) Forming discovers what the goals of the team will be and how the team can successfully make the goals happen. Everyone takes time to choose how he or she will fit into the team. Storming comes down to deciding whom the team wants as a leader. A disconnection occurs between team members and it becomes tempting to give up on the main goal, especially when ideas are bounced around and argued. Norming is coming up with a plan to achieve the overall goal with your team. Team members start to realize that they cannot always have their way, so they have to drop their ideas and go with the majority that agree with a certain idea. Performing is the spotlight of the teams efforts. The team has found ways to get along, work out ideas, and solve problems. They have found a way to get to their goal. Lastly, you have adjourning. “Adjourning is the dissolution of the group and the opportunity to reflect on successful or unsuccessful outcomes and how those outcomes can help each member perform in future groups better later.” (Wiemels, 2014)
Leadership is Involved in Teams
As a leader of a team, it is important to have a vision and set goals. Having a vision for your team allows them room to grow, work together, and develop new skills. It is even more important to write your vision down. Habakkuk 2:2, “And the LORD answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.” (ESV) Writing your vision down is like putting it into existence, and then having God supernaturally put His final changes on it.
When you set a goal as a leader, it motivates your team to come up with a plan to make the goal happen. Your team members will not get bored because they will spend time monitoring the goal, and finding ways to make it come true. This in turn makes them more efficient at their jobs.
A team leader should be learning and practicing skills alongside of his or her own team members. When the leader of the team is working on learning new things about the tasks on hand, it shows the team members that learning is continual, and needed. Learning new skills as a leader shows your team members that you don’t have to settle for just a certain amount of skills, because developing new skills will make you a more valuable team member, and more likely to get promoted.
A team leader does best when he or she practices her skills, sets goals, has a vision and learns alongside of their team members. An ideal team that I believe in is an organizational work force that involves a leader. The dynamics that make up a team are effective when a leader implements them. If there is not a leader, there is no working team.
