FSU is a great college overall. They have won 78 ACC team championships in 14 different sports. They also have over 40 active sport clubs for the students to choose from. Another perk of FSU is the great intramural sports program that provides year-round fun. They also have majors in Creative Arts, Business and Administration, Communication and Media, and sixteen other great choices.
FSU’s football program started in the 1890s with the Florida State Eleven. The university traces the start of its program on 1902, when it played its first three seasons. The uniforms were gold with a large purple F on the front. They had no pads to protect themselves from injury and often got hurt. The founding of their modern team started in 1947 following the heavy influx of GI’s from World War II. Football returned to the university in 1947 and had tremendous success from 1947-1959 under coaches Don Veller and Tom Nugent.
FSU’s basketball program started in 1947 and has started its 71st season of play. Florida State has made sixteen NCAA tournament appearances: appearing in the Round of 64 on eleven occasions, advancing to the Round of 32 on nine occasions, the Sweet Sixteen on five occasions, the Elite Eight on three occasions, and the Final Four on one occasion going on to the championship game and finishing as runner-up. The programs first coach was Don Loucks. He coached for a year and led them to a record of 5-13 and is one of two coaches to leave the program with more than eleven losses in a season. The program has had much success under all of its coaches but is yet to win a national title.
FSU’s college of law was founded in 1966. It holds classes in the B.K Roberts building which was named after the Florida Supreme Court Justice. The College of Law offers the Juris Doctor, which is the first professional law degree. The three-year program provides students a foundational first-year program, a legal writing program, and a varied offering of upper-level courses, seminars, clinics, and co-curricular activities.The College of Law offers joint degree programs allowing students to earn other degrees in conjunction with the J.D., including Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, and Ph.D. degrees. It is the 48th best collage of law and is the 17th overall in environmental law.
Florida State’s Medical school was established in 2000. It is one of the sixteen colleges making up the campus. It offers a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree for physicians. It also offers a Ph.D. degree and a Physician Assistant program. The Florida State University College of Medicine has two fellowship programs, family medicine at Lee Health, and micrographic surgery and dermatology oncology. Students complete their first two years at the College’s main campus in Tallahassee, which consists of a combination of traditional classroom instruction, as well as simulated clinical training at their Clinical Learning Center (CLC). At the CLC, medical students learn interviewing and physical exam skills by working with standardized patients in a clinical environment. Adult and infant interactive mannequins are also utilized to simulate a variety of clinical scenarios, such as a heart attack or an asthma exacerbation, so that students can learn to determine and apply the appropriate treatment in a no-risk environment. It was ranked third out of the top ten lowest accepting collages in the nation.
The first offering of criminology courses at Florida State University began in the early 1950s in the Department of Criminology and Corrections within the School of Social Welfare. In 1973, the School of Criminology was established to offer degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels in criminology. Dr. Eugene Czajkoski, a criminology faculty member receptive to both research and practice, was the School’s Founding Dean. Czajkowski served as Dean of the School from 1973 until late 1986.
In 2012, Eppes Hall, under the direction of Thomas Blomberg, dean of the College of Criminology and Criminal Justice, underwent a $3 million transformation. Central air conditioning, state-of-the-art technology in the classrooms, and collaborative learning environments, to name a few, were included in the master plan. In 2013, 95 years after first opening its doors to students, Eppes Hall became the new home to one of Florida State University’s highest ranked academic programs, the College of Criminology & Criminal Justice. In 2014, the College of Criminology and Criminal Justice won the 2014 Tallahassee/Leon County Historic Preservation Award for outstanding achievement in the Civic/Community Resource Preservation category for the renovation of Eppes Hall
The College of Arts and Sciences is the oldest college at the university, having existed since 1905. Though it has awarded bachelor’s degrees since its founding, the first master’s degree was not offered until 1908. The next year, the university, then called the Florida Female College, was renamed Florida State College for Women and issued its first master’s degree under that name in 1909. Doctorates were given out by the College of Arts and Sciences beginning in 1952.
The college is housed in several buildings including Dodd Hall, the Bellamy Building, the Psychology Building and the Williams Building. The dean of the College of Arts and Sciences is located in the Longmire Building.
In July 2011, Quinn Huckaba, previously associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, became interim dean. He then was formally named dean in October 2012.
FSU is a great college for almost everything. They have many majors to choose from and they are all ranked within the high percentile in the nation. The sports program is also very good, amassing 78 national championships over 14 teams. That is why FSU is better than other colleges.
