Building material is very important in one construction. Building material is any material that is used for a construction purpose. Building material can be categorized into two sources, it is natural and synthetic. For natural building material, it is unprocessed by industry and for synthetic building material are made in industrial setting.
i)Flooring
When constructing the floor system, it is important to take into consideration the type of flooring, the pipes and so on. Different types of resort have different type of flooring system. For our Ohana Resort and Spa, we are choosing material of travertine flooring for resort room, granite mosaic for bathroom and ionised plasma glass with black granite floor fixtures for the lobby. For material of travertine flooring for using in resort room, it is natural stone with beautiful variations. We choose for this material is because natural and eco-friendly, travertine is an abundant natural resource that is fully recyclable and biodegradable. It can be salvaged from old installations for use in new ones, but it will also break down into the environment seamlessly if disposed of (pros and cons of travertine floor, 2016).
Furthermore, we choosing this material is because ease of repair. Travertine come in tile form, when some piece breaks, it can be removed and replaced it. Therefore, it is important to keep extra travertine tiles around to ensure when the time repairs, it will can be matched to the installation. For material of granite mosaic, it will use in bathroom. Granite mosaic is formed from the slow crystallisation of molten magma cooling deep beneath the earth’s surface and is an incredibly dense and watertight stone (toppstiles, 2016). The reason we choose this material is because appearance. Granite mosaic is available in many colour and styles and because it is natural material, each of tiles has a mottled pattern. And other reason for purchased it, is highly durable, therefore will low-maintenance flooring.
ii)Road
Back of the Resort, we have a beautiful garden full of exotic plants. The most amazing part is at night, that you can see stars on the road and the pathway. Its caused by glowing stones that have been developed by CORE that call it CORE GLOW. It is eco-friendly lighting that requires neither electricity nor power to light it also that has no carbon emissions will not save money but save the environment as well. Its need to use sunlight or any various artificial lights to full charge for 10 minutes that will glow to 10 – 20 hours long. What make them glow is a chemical element called Strontium Aluminate. An activator, Europium is added to make the Strontium Aluminate a photophoshorescence(glow). It is both biological and chemically inert so safe for human, animal and plant life.
iii)Door
Door is a moving structure used to block off and allow access to, an entrance to or within an enclosed space, such as like building. Door are used to screen areas of a building for aesthetic, keeping formal and creating an impression of what lies beyond (wikipedia, 2016). Our Ohana Resort and Spa will select two materials to our door; it is automated glass sliding door and wooden shutter sliding door. One door is material for our resort lobby another material is for our guest room inside.
Automated glass sliding door is modern, stylish style. When we use the automated glass, sliding will be guest easy to access and give a feel of luxury. We choose material for automated glass sliding door for our resort lobby is because this material is environment-friendly and cost efficient. Automatic doors do not need too much energy to operate and as the doors only open when an individual approaches precious heat is retained within the premises which keeps the temperature consistent (advantages of automatic door, 2014).
Wooden shutter sliding door, we will use in guest room inside. These types of door are not affected by temperature because wood have high R-value. Maintenance of the wooden door also is easy and cheaper. Therefore, in our resort will use this material for door inside of the guest room. Furthermore, Wooden have long life if good quality timber is used. Wooden also can be painted or polished in any shade (Advantages and Disadvantages of Wooden Door, Window, Ventilator Frames, 2016)
iv)Windows
In hospitality industry has a unique set of needs for both the private and common areas are maintained (Hospitality and Hotel Window Treatments, 2016). With so many choose of window material available, we choose material of push down shutter window. Window shutter is a solid and stable window covering usually consisting of a frame of vertical slats and horizontal rails. Window shutter also have two types, one is interior shutters and one is exterior shutters. Our resort is using interior shutters. Interior shutters usually hinge on either side of a window opening and swing inwards to allow access to the window or to allow light to enter a room (window shutter, 2016).
Advantages of window shutters are shutters are quiet when a breeze blows through an open window. Vinyl blinds move about and whistle with the breeze, while curtains can blow into the room and get in the way. Shutters are better on privacy; light and air control compare with other material. Shutters ability to control the light and air flow in a room, as well as maintain privacy conditions. In additional, this material is easy to maintain and are durable. Shutter compare with other material is more easy to clean with a simple cloth (Walker, 2016)
v)Wall
Interior design in a resort is very important because it will become how about the resort concept and sign. For our Ohana resort and Spa, the materials that our use to wall is travertine, glass mosaic wall fixture and polyurethane foam. Different type of material building will use in different type of places.
For material travertine wall tile, will use in guest room and lobby area. We can be using travertine wall tile to create beautiful wall pattern and make each tile unique, suitable for any room. We choose this material is because travertine tiles are available in very different colour and tone alternative. The option is almost endless and it is all up to your imagination for travertine wall tile. Travertine is a type of stone which is more eco-friendly than other materials. Since travertine tile do not have to go through the manufacturing process, it is perfect option and match our resort concept “Going Green” trend (2016 Guide for Travertine Tile Pros and Cons, 2015).
We choose and using glass mosaic wall fixture is because it has the effect be an amazing and refreshing way to rejuvenate to our resort style. Benefit of installing glass mosaic tiles because it will easy maintenance and durability. It means that maintenance of a glass tile is simple and effortless. Glass tile is environmentally friendly since it just takes less energy consumption to create a tile out of glass. Therefore, eco-friendly also take as a benefit for installing this material. Installing glass mosaic tile also can be used to bring beauty to our bathroom. Though the various styles and finishes of glass mosaic wall fixture are lines that are designed to both provide an assortment of stunning colour but also to have a highly opalescent look (W, 2016).
Our Ohana Resort and Spa base wall for whole resort is using polyurethane foam. One outstanding use of polyurethane is rigid foam, which has unique insulating properties that make it deal for walls in resort (Council, Introduction to Polyurethanes, 2015). Due to the ability to block air movement, polyurethane insulation creates a tight barrier around buildings, helping to block infiltration of pollen, dust, allergens and unhealthy contaminants. Polyurethane foam insulation also can helps block the noise sound to create a more peaceful and comfortable building (Council, 2015).
vi)Acoustical
Acoustics is the interdisciplinary science that deals with the study of all mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids including topics such as vibration, sound, ultrasound and infrasound (Acoustics, 2016). Types of acoustics will affect the solve sound and noise problem.
Acoustic foam, commonly referred to as sound absorbing foam or soundproof foam, is available in a variety of colour, patterns, thicknesses and noise reduction coefficient ratings. It has two line of acoustical foam; it is alpha line and sonex line. Alpha line is premier brand of acoustic foam available in there colour and linear, pyramid, wedge or flat pattern. The Sonex lines of acoustic foam are an industry recognized standard for reducing noise. It provides a large selection of material for ceiling and wall application in natural foam colour (ACOUSTIC FOAM, 2016). In our Ohana Resort and Spa, we choose type of Sonex lines and light grey colour.
vii)Roofing
Solar energy is converted energy harnessed from the sun for usable activities (National Geographic, 2016). The management of Ohana Resort and Spa has decided to incorporate the usage of SunPower solar energy system patented with PowerGuard roof tile technology (Environmental Leader, 2009). This technology is a non-penetrable and wind proofed system that will be installed flat on the roof and gives thermal insulation to the entire building and protects the membrane of the roof (Environmental Leader, 2009). This technology will help the business to cut its carbon dioxide (CO2) emission by 10,000 tonnes over a period of 30 years and reduce the consumption of oil by roughly 749 barrels annually (Environmental Leader, 2009).
viii)Plumbing
Pipes that are the right size and made of the right materials will improve your water pressure and minimize leakage and waste. Steel or PEX pipes (cross-linked polyethylene that is flexible rather than rigid) maintain heat well and are durable. If you are using plastic or copper pipes, adding pipe insulators is relatively cheap and can reduce heat loss by 80%. If your pipes are insulated to keep the heat in you won’t need to use as much energy to heat your water. Eco-friendly toilets are inexpensive and can significantly reduce your water bill. Green toilets use 20% to 60% less energy compared to their classic counterparts, so they will save you money on your water bill. The more recent models don’t lose any of the functionality of older toilets but they significantly reduce water consumption. Eco-friendly faucets also significantly reduce you water use. It is still important to avoid letting the water run when it isn’t needed, but newer faucets give good water pressure with less water going down the drain.
Water-efficient showerheads are widely available. Flow-optimized/water-saving showerheads can significantly reduce water flow up to 1.75 GPM (Gallons Per Minute) compared to the standard flow of water at 2.5 GPM. In other words, you will only use 70% of the water consumed with traditional showerheads. In addition to reducing water consumption, this eco-friendly solution also decreases energy costs because you will use less water without cutting back on your shower’s performance. Lawns and landscaping account for 30% of the water used in the United States, so conservation is very important. Irrigation systems that schedule watering so that it will efficiently nourish the vegetation but avoid wasting water are very useful. Watering when less water will evaporate or run off is critical and drip systems are far better than spray systems in many settings. Outdoor watering systems that are eco-friendly can ensure a beautiful, neighbourly and cost-efficient yard.
