Global warming is one of the largest and most debated issues in modern society amongst scientists, politicians and the public alike. Some people think that global warming does exist, whilst some people feel the complete opposite way and feel that Global Warming is a concept created by scientists to keep the levels of Carbon Dioxide reasonably low. I personally feel that I am siding for the people who think Global Warming exists, there is a lot of evidence to support this idea as well, not just belief.
But what is the theory officiaGlobal Warming? Global Warming is the theory that the earth is becoming warmer due to increase in Carbon Dioxide which gtraps the heat in the atmosphere, causing larger environmental issues such as the polar ice caps melting and the oceans getting warmer.
The first, and most important, reason why people feel that Global warming exists is that there has been a vital increase of Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere since 1950 (the industrial revolution.) Scientist believe that Carbon Dioxide from our factories is damaging the atmosphere and therefore letting more heat in as the atmosphere is basically like a blanket which keeps us warm, so the increase in Carbon Dioxide means that the atmosphere is letting less light reflect back into space, which is making Earth warmer than it should be.
There is also evidence of Global Warming existing due to the massive environmental differences recently, the most important and possibly the worst issue is the fact that the polar ice caps are melting. They have decreased massively in mass from Global Warming (around 150 to 250 cubic kilometres of ice) between the years 2002 and 2005 alone, and that is just Greenland. In Antarctica, it lost around 152 cubic kilometres of ice during the same time period.
Another environmental issue which proves that global warming exists is the fact that the acidity of the ocean surface (top 700m) due to the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by around the 30%, there are around 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, produced by humans, absorbed by the ocean every year. The most shocking thing is that this has only been since the industrial revolution in the 1940s!
Yet another environmental issue thought to be caused by global warming is the rapid rise in sea level and because of this, the Maldives are thought to have completely been submerged underwater within the next 30 years, causing one of the biggest population crisis’ of all time. The reason why people believe this is because the sea levels have risen by around 8 inches within the last century. But how do the sea levels rise?
The sea levels rise due to a process called thermal expansion, which is when the bonds between two or more particles become weaker and weaker over a period of time due to the increase of temperature. So if these particles are water particles, the volume of the water would increase due to the weaker bonds, so as there is not enough space for the ocean to expand outwards, it would start to rise upwards. This is the reason why the sea levels rise, and consequently, the reason why the Maldives may be submerged underwater within the next 30 years, which would cause a population crisis.
And yet another, out of many more environmental issues proving the global warming exists is the fact that the number of record breaking weather events around the world has been increasing. An example of this was May bank holiday (2018) in the United Kingdom, which reached a record high temperature of 28.5C! That is only in the UK, there are many, many, many more different record breaking high temperatures around the world even within the past few months.
The final, and most complicated proof that Global Warming exists is the Greenhouse effect, which is is when Ultraviolet rays from the Sun hits the Earth’s surface and some of it is absorbed. However, the rest of it is reflected back into the atmosphere as infrared rays (heat) and some of it is absorbed by gas particles in the atmosphere. So because of this, the infrared rays (heat) heat up the gas, making our planet warmer.
In conclusion, there is so much proof that Global Warming exists, for example, the Greenhouse effect, Sea level rise and the polar ice caps melting. That there is not really a point of even thinking that it does not exist in the first place. However, you can think what you want to think and feel how you want to feel about this very debated and popular argument.
