Gamal Abdel Nasser
“Events are not a matter of chance.” This is a quote said by Gamal Abdel Nasser. Nasser was the second President of Egypt. His presidency lasted from 1956 to 1970, he served as President until his death. When he was young he moved to cairo, away from his parents. That gave Nasser the opportunity to go to school and later entered into Royal Military Academy and graduated. He left a good impact in Egypt.
Gamal was born on January 15, 1918 in Alexandria, Egypt. He lived in a small, poor little village up until he was 8 years old. At a very young age, he moved to Cairo, Egypt with his uncle. He had a lot of trouble with many of his school teachers. Some teachers came from Europe and were British. Gamal took part in an anti-British movements that happened in the streets and other different organizations against them. Nasser graduated highschool in 1937. Encyclodpedia.com mentioned that year after he graduated, he joined the Egyptian army. Gamal went to law college for a couple months and later he ended up entering the Royal Military Academy. Gamal successfully graduated from Royal Military Academy as a second lieutenant.
In 1942, Nasser relocated to Sudan and while he was there, he founded the Free Officers. The Free Officers were a secret organization that were against the British. In 1943, after several years of service, he became an instructor at the military academy that he attended and then at the army staff college. In 1948, he became an official member of the Egyptian army. According to encyclopedia.com, “Nasser was a member of the Egyptian army that along with other Arab armies was sent to Palestine to thwart the establishment of Israel.” This was a demeaning defeat for the Arab armies. During this humiliating defeat, Nasser said something, “We will fight from house to house, from village to village. We will fight than live humiliated. We are building our country, our history, our future.” They suffered from a humiliating defeat against Israel.
Gamal Abdel Nasser was elected to become the president of Egypt in the year of 1956. Two years later, he became the leader of the United Arab Republic. Nasser was the first controversial leader of the arab world/community. He created a short lived Arab Republic with only lasted from 1958 to 1961. During the year of 1969, Nasser launched a War of Attrition. The war of attrition was a conflict launched by Egypt on Israel. At the end, no land was exchanged, they got to keep whatever they had. Egypt failed to gain some territory.
Shortly after the War of Attrition, Gamal Abdel Nasser unfortunately passed away of a heart attack. He served as president of Egypt for the the last few years of his life. Nasser died on September 28, 1970 in Cairo, Egypt. He was a very inspirational person to many people in Egypt. He is still remembered to this day as an important person in Africa’s history because of the impact that he made. He impacted many Arab groups and some of the Middle East. His legacy is still debated today. For a few people, Nasser was a leader who reformed his country and re-established Arab pride but for others Nasser was the leader who freed Egypt from European or British dominations and reformed their economy. Overall, Nasser left a good, positive impact in both Egypt and the Arab world.
