Romantic music is a period of Western classical music that began in the late 18th or early 19th century. It is related to Romanticism, the Western artistic and literary movement that arose in the second half of the 18th century, and Romantic music in particular dominated the Romantic movement in Germany. The romantic period had lots of poetic usage in it. People now don’t think poetry is romantic. It used be beautiful now it’s old fashion. The Romantic writers would over exaggerate a lot. For example just a simple cluster of flowers would make someone pour tears.
The romantic period was socially, focusing on the inner self and expressing feelings.
The romantic period was very interested in the history of Greeks and Roman elements. Romanticism was very physical with love and death happening a lot and all the drama.
Here are some of the composers from that period.
Johannes Brahms
Johannes Brahms was a German composer, he played the piano around the romantic period. He was born in Hamburg on may 7 1833 and he died April 3, 1897. He said to a friend near the end of his life, that he “had achieved enough here I had before me a carefree old age and could enjoy it in peace.” His music was very peaceful. He composed violin, cello, clarinet and sonatas with piano.
His parents were Johann Jakob and Christina Nissen Brahms.
When johannes was 6 years old he found his own way to wright music to get the Melody’s that he made on paper. He composed piano organ chorus and voice.
He went to collage at University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna.
Johannes also in his early years he conducted a male choir.
His Wiegenlied, frequently referred to in English as Brahms's Lullaby or Cradle Song, is the composer's Op. 49, No. 4, originally written voice and piano, published in 1868.
Johannes Brahms was born into a Lutheran family in Hamburg.
Brahms was also a conductor for a ladies choir in Hamburg in his late years.
In 1863 Brahms gave a concert in Austria give the public a taste of his music.
There he met Richard Wagner. Even though Brahms had criticized Richard wagner earlier in the year they still admired each others work.
Robert Schumann
Robert Schumann was a German composer and was very inspiring.He was a very well known around the world
Robert Schumann was taught by a teacher named Friedrich Wieck. His teacher got a hand injury and it made it not possible to complete his dreams of being the finest pianist in Germany. Robert went to college at Leipzig University.
Robert married Friedrich’s daughter in 1840. Her name was Clara. Even though her father, Friedrich Wieck was against them marrying they did married anyway.
Friedrich did not want his daughter to marry Robert so he when to court.
They had a long legal battle but Robert still married Clara.
Clara’s parents divorced because her mother was having an affair with Friedrich’s
friend. When her parents divorced it limited her being able to see her mother because she moved after she remarried. Robert had a mental disorder and was sent to live in a mental asylum because he wasn’t capable of living with his wife.
Frédéric Chopin
Frédéric Chopin was born on march 1 1810 in Żelazowa Wola, Poland. When Frederic Chopin was 21 years old he settled in Paris, France. Between frederic being 21 and 39 – when he died – he only performed 30 public performances.
When he was 21 he moved from Warsaw, Poland to Paris France. And to make money he sold his compositions. He created a good friendship with Franz Liszt.
Later in his life he unsuccessfully proposed to Maria wodzinska. He also had a not
so good relationship with a female French writer by the name of Amantine Dupin. Also known as George Sand. Chopin was in bad health throughout his life and died of tuberculosis. Chopin's most famous piano work include mazurkas, nocturnes and impromptus. He mostly composed music with his piano. Chopin composed piano solos but some with two pianos. For college, Chopin went to the University of Warsaw.
Hector Berlioz
Hector Berlioz was born in 1803 on December 11th. Hector's dad was a doctor and he was suppose to follow him. He went to Parisian med school but didn’t really want to be a doctor. After that, he decided to become a composer,when he was 22 hector fell madly in love with Harriet Smithson.Then he pursued to marry her until she accepted 7 years later Harriet later inspired his first big successful piece called
Symphonie fantastique. They got married on October 1, 1833. The marriage was not very well picked because they did not last. When they were in peaceful place for the first couple years Berlioz had his only child, Louis. Berlioz lived in Rhône-Alpes France. Berlioz composed 3 Operas including:Benvenuto Cellini that was unsuccessful the 2nd huge composition Les Troyens was so large in scale
It never went live. Berlioz was born in southeastern France at La Côte-Saint-André.
Berlioz played the flute and guitar.
Richard Wagner
On May 22, 1813 in Leipzig, Germany. When Richard was 6 months old his father died of typhus fever. When Richard was 7 years old he started. Being able to create and improvise on his own.
As a young boy wagner went to dresden in Germany. After his career started he was a favorite artist of Adolf Hitler. There is proof that hitler played his music in concentration camps to re educate them in the war.
Richard was famous for his popular operas
At age 15 he wrote piano transcriptions of Ludwig van Beethoven's "9th Symphony" and orchestral overtures
