Favorite Son:
Favorite Son is the term used to express the support/ strategy the whigs used to try and get support their family/ home area that they lived in. They tried to do this so it would not lead to a majority popular vote. The Whigs did not have a chance at the popular vote, so instead they thought if the House had the power, they would have a chance to be in the running.
Nullification:
Nullification is the term that says that if a (federal) law is unconstitutional, the state can choose ignore (nullify) it. In the 1830’s there was something called the nullification crisis which was between South Carolina and the Federal Government. This crisis consisted of all tariffs (1828, 1832, 1833).
Spoils System:
The spoils system came about during a time in which suspicion of the federal government from the Democrats was high. This system was meant to award political supporters for what they were doing with political positions. Jackson’s supported the system and during the time even stated, “Every man is as good as his neigh- bor,” he declared—perhaps “equally better.”
Rotation in office:
This is a common technique used by politicians where they strategize to change their holding of a public office very frequently by using methods such as discharges and other types of substitutions the way proponents such as Thomas Jefferson, and Andrew Jackson did.
Trail of Tears:
Trail of Tears was the tragic forced removal of Native American Indian tribes such as the Cherokees, Chickasaws, Seminoles and Choctaws from their native, that were removed from their indigenous lands in the decades of the 1820’s -1840’s when the United States government mandated their evacuation.

Panic of 1837:
This was a very serious economic crisis that involved a a massive recession and was directly responsible for the plummeting drop in not only employee wages but in prices and profit margins as well, all while unemployment grew to an all time high and lasted well into the 1840’s .
Force Bill:
This bill took place in 1833 and involves a law that was enforced by the congress during the Nullification Crisis and was meant to enforce the collection of tariffs and taxes on all foreign products and imports coming into the United States with the hope of protecting domestic products at the same time.
Divorce Bill :
This bill was passed in 1840, during Van Buren’s presidency and involved the withdrawal of government funding out from his predecessor Andrew Jackson’s pet banks and ultimately deposited the money in safe vaults in places throughout the United states to keep the money secure from the dangers of inflation
Pet Banks:
This was a financial and economic maneuver that was designed by Andrew Jackson with the sole intent of voiding the Bank of the United states and giving power to the state banks that would take in the federal money and deposits being made as of 1833, yet these pet banks ultimately failed.
Whig Party:
This was the name given to a brand new party that developed in the early 1830’s to show strong opposition to Andrew Jackson’s administration, and show their solidarity in promoting policies such as strong protective tariffs that would protect domestic products as well as the promotion of the national bank.
Tariff of 1833:
This was a tax agenda that was introduced by both John C. Calhoun and Henry Clay in 1833 in an effort to protect American products and domestic products from foreign completion and to strengthen the United States economy and undo the damage caused by the Nullification Crisis .
Specie Circular:
In an effort to demand that all payment made in exchange for government should be made in gold or silver exclusively, and it was an executive order that was mandated during Jackson’s administration and eventually continued into the next administration under Martin Van Buren.
Tariff of 1832:
This was a tariff that was strongly opposed by the southern states, specifically South Carolina due to the fact that South Carolina decided it was unconstitutional to force them to pay taxes, and they ultimately declared that further insisting the collection of taxes would force the them to leave the union.
South Carolina Exposition:
In 1828 this was written by John C. Calhoun in his adamant rejection of the tariff of 1832 leading to the very serious threat that South Carolina would succeed and leave the union if the tariff of 1832 was not immediately repealed.
Tariff of Abomination –this was the name given to the tariff of 1828 as a way to express the strong dislike by the southern states, specifically South Carolina to express it’s discontent and strong rejection against the tariff which ultimately lea the state to be the first state to nullify the tariff.
Corrupt bargain- this had a tremendous impact of the office of the presidency from this point on when it impacted both John Quincy Adams, the 6th president of the United states who made a pact to give the Secretary of State job to Henry Clay if and only if he assisted Adams to win against his opponent Jackson.
King mob – this term was derived during the presidency of Andrew Jackson and used to describe his role among the people as the ‘ common man’ president in terms of his enormous popularity among the masses, and it was also solidified as a term after the chaos of the crowds that showed up for his inauguration .
12 Amendment – this amendment was created for the sole purpose of providing and establishing the protocol for the systematic selection and election for both the President and Vice President of the United States.
Revolution 1828 – this term was used to specifically to describe the monumental impact that Andrew Jackson caused when he broke the long string of Presidents that were elected from the 2 states of Virginia and Massachusetts, ultimately giving hope for the common man to prevail politically.
Anti – Masonic Party – for the very first time in American history a third party was developed called the Anti- Masonic Party which was created to focus on only one issue as it’s primary objective which was to reject Freemasonry.
National Republican Party – with all the Anti Jackson sentiment a new party was created called the National Republican Party and also known as the Anti-Jacksonian Party and it was first developed while Adams was president.
