The conflict between good and bad / the holy and the infernal its one of the most long-standing conflict in the world and every human being on this planet has an opinion, a belief about this subject. Good and bad, as we are taught from early childhood is represented by a God and Satan, the first one representing kindness, love and forgivness and Satan being linked to selfishness, hellish acts and misbehaving. Friedrich Nietzsche opinion about morality, expresed in two works, „Beyond Good and Evil” and „On the Genealogy of Morals”, he essentially makes a critique of morality by saying that many who consider themselves to be moral are simply acting from cowardice (wanting to do evil but to frightent of the implications).
In history, cultures like Abrahamic religion, evil is the reverse of good and in the final bettle good should prevail and evil should be defeated. In Christianity for exemple the religion is based on the believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the savior of humanity as it was prophesied in the Old Testament. These professions of faith state that Jesus suffered, died, was buried, descended into hell, and rose from the dead, in order to grant eternal life to those who believe in him . The Catholic Church doctrines are that every human is made in the image of God. Within man “is both the powerful surge toward the good because we are made in the image of God, and the darker impulses toward evil because of the effects of Original Sin”. .” And a good exemple is Adam and Eve’s original sin, the sin of disobedience in consuming the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says: „By his sin Adam, as the first man, lost the original holiness and justice he had received from God, not only for himself but for all humans. Adam and Eve transmitted to their descendants human the “original sin”. As a result of original sin, human nature is weakened in its powers, subject to ignorance, suffering and inclined to sin „ .
This constant conflict has generated conventional themes in literature and poetry like William Shakespeare’s Hamlet or the the novel Heart of darkness by Joseph Conrad who claims that all humans have an „inner darkness”. The “inner darkness “ that resides into humans it’s a weapon that can be used in devious acts against human nature, people acting against people, beliefs against beliefs . Another work that exemplify that inner evil that human posses is Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus, who makes a bond with the devil despide the Good Angel`s worning for twenty-four years of absolute power after which his soule will be the devil toy . This makes clear that humans want to possess absolut power and control abouve others, powers that they were never mented to posses, as in a way they strive to becoms gods.
If John Milton intended to picture Satan as a hero, from the beginning of the book when the reader is introduced into his point of view, making him the most empathetic character, he managed to do so using his artistic strengh . The artistic creation of Satan keeps the reader focused on him and initially draws the reader to Satan’s viewpoint, unaware of the exaggerations and outright lies that are parts of his magnificent speeches. Lightly the reader can forget that the powers of the fallen angel come from God, his creator, and that the maker can always take the abilities and the pawer back from Satan. This fact can start in the reader’s mind a series of question about God and his authority figure. But let’s not forget the Satan is the chief demon who is attempting to conquer Heven and defeat his maker, God, and so by this doings he cannot be the hero in Milton’s book . On the other hand Bulgakov’s image of Satan is incarneted into Waland, a strange and odd man, the ruines the lives of two clouse frinds by predicting the death of one, Berlioz by his name.
