More the a century Indigenous people have been moved from different residents, schools and workplace (RCMP,2015) . Canadian society have many different perspectives about this topic because of a multicultural backgrounds. Majority of the Canadian citizens stand with the Indigenous community while the minority who don't. Citizens who do stand up because of the lack of justice and the lack of concentrations towards that community has been bais. The causes for this political growth – movement would be the missing and murdered women, Suicide rates in the indigenous community , and the Influence of neighbouring country.
Causes of the rise of Indigenous Communities development
Indigenous people are starting to get notice by the society after several decades of injustices pressure from the Canadian government such as moving them to reservations and reserve. Aboriginals were not allowed to seek legal help to fight against their unjust treatment until 1951(Henderson, W. B., & Bell, C. (n.d.). Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Retrieved).The Canadian government had their own plans for the Aboriginal people(assimilation)(G. (2006, December 20). United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples). UN Declaration of Human Rights forced the government to re-evaluate their treatment of the Aboriginals. After WWII Canadians learned more about human rights .The Aboriginal contributions to the war made the Canadian society realize that the Aboriginals were treated unfairly.Canada was greatly influenced by the U.S and by activism of all kinds (feminism, etc.) Canada was completely dedicated to maintaining the UN Declaration of Human Rights.Aboriginals began winning support in the 1960s -this is around the time when major legal changes started to occur. Over 33 aboriginal organizations and four associations formed during this time period.
Indigenous Women in Canada
Indigenous can be defined as individuals who identify as Metis,First Nations, Inuit, being registered as or treaty Indigenous as defined by the Indian Act Canada, and/or being registered with a First Nation or a band (Statistics Canada, 2011). About 600- 700 of women and girls within Canada identified as Indigenous person in 2006; making up 4% of total Canadian population (Statistics Canada, 2011). Indigenous women have an higher rate of being a victim that is triple times more high than a non-Indigenous women and as made and awareness in Canada (Brennan, 2011). Over the recent years we have seen many reports of political activism from canadian indigenous people,- the subjects for this matter are the missing and murdered indigenous women, the oppressed law system (treaty), Discrimination in workplace- school etc. Canada is going threw an crisis and it is the violence against the Indigenous women, this can be physically such as a women going or gone through any form of assault and psychological effect. Indigenous women are being mistreated and seen as a minority instead a priority. Throughout history till this day the disappearances of indigenous women and the murder rates were not taken seriously and ignored by the officials. Aboriginal activist fought for the equality and fair treatment of the Aboriginal Peoples. This problem became more aware when Prime Minister Trudeau addresed Canada the missing and Murdered women in the Prime Minister elections in 2015 when the Indigenous communities started to positions and have rallys. Suicides
There has been a high rates of suicide in the two northern Indigenous communities in both Manitoba and Ontario which has caused Indingoes leaders to declare states of emergency. Indigenous communities have an higher rates of suicide then other communities in canada, within indigenous Aboriginals first then Inuit are ten times more to take their lives the a average Canadian (Statistic Canada,2018) . Indigenous people are troubled by this issue of losing their family members if their community and feel that their unfair economic conditions and societal prejudice against them. This is a cause for the suicide rates increase in their communities.
Neighbouring Countries (ex. America) Influence
America in the homeland of thousands of native Americans who also go threw the same situation that Canadian Indigenous people are going threw and that is in-justice law, not being heard. An example would be North Dakota- is a state located in America where approximately 30,000 American Indians are living. About 562 tribes in total in America, 33 in the states alone. About 11 different origins of tribes are living together in North Dakota such as Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, the Yanktonia, Sisseton, Wahpeton, Hunkpapa and other Dakota/Lakota Tribes, along with the Pembina Chippewa, Cree and Metis.The proposed construction of pipelines is said to be taking place from North Dakota to Illinois, which affects the Native American tribes living there.This can be a problem because the pipelines not only affect their land but can contaminate their water as well which is very dangerous for humans, let alone humans it is also dangerous for the fish living in ponds which is the main source of food for Native Americans in that area.In the U.S. Constitutional Amendment it does not specify anything about the american Indians owning land or having the right to keep their sacred lands safe. Thus telling us that our neighbouring countrie the United States of America in going threw the same problem.
