Abstract

What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a serious brain disorder that can affect the way a person thinks , acts and make a person believe something is there when it isn't. The precise cause of this mental disorder is unknown. Family history , age , psychological drugs , malnutrition , birth complications and if the father is older are risk factors of schizophrenia (Schizophrenia 2018.) There are many symptoms of schizophrenia such as , cognitive , behavioral, psychological and speech (Think, S. H. 2018) Schizophrenia happens to approximately 2.2 million people in the United States , and it is the top 10 causes of mental disorders in developed countries. The person may begin to start having delusions with extreme exaggeration to their normal thought process. People with schizophrenia exaggerate these type of situations for example, they may hear voices in their heads that someone is convincing them that there is someone coming to kill. Furthermore, a person with schizophrenia begins to hallucinate objects and/or people. A common symptom is hearing voices inside their heads telling them to do things. Schizophrenia is not always there , it comes and goes (Think, S. H. 2018.)  My former classmate was diagnosed with schizophrenia , he was 21 at the age he was diagnosed. I saw him at a bar talking to himself. The bartender told us that guy is strange “ He comes here every night and order a glass of milk.” I immediately went up to him to start a conversation. I tried to catch up with him , I asked him where he lives now and what he does for a living . His reply was “ I live at Walmart on Preston.” I asked him what he meant by that and he told me he wanted to move there. He quickly ended the conversation and said “ I have to go , they want me home.” I called his brother who I knew and told him everything , he informed me that his brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and refuses help. He tried to burn down their house , so they had to let him go . People who have schizophrenia may refuse to receive hep, they can’t be forced or persuaded. (Think, S. H. 2018)

Diagnosis Of Norman Bates

With all the symptoms from schizophrenia this male character that has perceived multiple signs of the disorder is Norman Bates from the original  Netflix series “Bates Motel”, which is based on a true story of a serial killer Ed Gein. Norman is a seventeen year old young teenage and is at his vulnerable state of developing schizophrenia. He lives with his mother Norma , who is a single mother. Norma, whom is his mother contributes to his schizophrenia mental state  because controls him and extremely involved with everything in his life. The controlling behavior of his mothers’ involvement in his life causes Norman to only depend on his mother and slowly become obsessed with her. Norman killed his father because he was abusing his mother  Norma. Norma covered it up and made it seem as an accident , as if the shelf accidentally dropped on Sam ( Norman’s father ). That memory erased from his brain , he no longer remembered that he killed his father. They move to another state , where Norma buys a motel and calls it “ Bates Motel”. The first night they moved in a neighbor comes to introduces himself , but ends up sexually assaulting Norma Bates. Normal hears the commotion and began to stabbed the man to death. While he was stabbing the man , he got flashbacks of when his dad was abusing his mother and he couldn't stop stabbing the man. Once again, his mother covers it up and acts as if nothing happened.  Norman starts a relationship with his english teacher, and he ends up at her house where he does not want to be. She begins to get intimate with Norman. He becomes very nervous and scared,  because in his mind  believes that his mother is going to find out where he is and kill the teacher. Normal becomes delusional, he kills the teacher and loses that memory. The Schizophrenia disorder made Norman believe that his mother was sitting in front of him telling him to kill the teacher. Norman has showed signs of the disorder , such as  delusions of his mother speaking to him to hallucination of his mother in the same room as him. He ultimately got  rid of the women that try to come between him and his mother's close relationship , which is an example of impaired vision and logic. He was not in touch with reality , he hallucinated the entire night.

    Treatments and Personal Thoughts

Treatments for schizophrenia include a life-long treatment of psychotherapy and the medications (Schizophrenia Treatment 2018)Although, it is hard to get a person with that disorder to get help. My thoughts on this disorder is that it is a serious mental illness. There are many schizophrenic people who are jobless, homeless and alone. I know the drugs aren’t exactly going to cure the disorder but can help. I hope they find a stronger regimen that can help these people.
