Mortality is inevitable.Mortality due to trauma caused individuals to suffer from deep pain. During the world of Nazi, accoriding to Book Theif by Mark Zusak, the majority of people had to go along with authoritarian governments. Failure to do so will cause people their life. Book Thief is about this foster daughter ,Lisel, who was fostered by Hans and Rosa Hubermann. Hubermann did not believe in Nazism, but they had to conform to society. Liesel and her brother (Werner) were sent to foster parents because their mother no longer was able to feed them. Actually, the mother “vanished” into thin air after she gave up her children. On the journey to foster parents Lisel’s brother Werner died. Even though grief heals overtime, it is hard to process the death of a loved one to trauma, especially when it is a recurring event. The minority(the outcast) experienced segregation, slurs that were directly targeted to the minority, and majority that failed to conform into society faced deadly consequences.
Morality due to trauma caused the loved ones to process the grief and failure to accept the new reality right away. After witnessing the death of a loved one, the mind often attempts to forget what had happened in order to survive. During the funeral Lisel’s mother tried to reject reality “… she started to dig. He couldn’t be dead. He couldn’t be dead”(Zusak 30).The denial of someone’s death conveyed they were afraid of remembering painful memories of loved one death.. This denial of reality later becomes repressed memories where the memories consisting of the loved one are seemed to be forgotten in order to survive.
Although the death of Werner is unknown it sounded like it was unexpected Lisel stole one book from the grave digger. Although she could not read, she held on to the book. That book represents last time Lisel ever saw her brother. Lisel had to say goodbye to her mother right after she buried her brother. Death(the narrator) describes the goodbye moment as “There was a chaos of goodbye”(Zusak 32). Lisel was left all alone in the foreign place where she is not used to all alone. Over the span of several months “Every night, Liesel would nightmare”(Zusak 42). Her brother stared at her helpless. She would have a hard time falling asleep. Hans (the foster dad) would come and comfort her for multiple times. Lisel would find comfort in his arms. Lisel was sent to Nazi school in Germany.
The conformity to the Nazi world is obligated for the citizens where minorites were attack for being “an outcast”. The first day of school Lisel learned “The first thing they did there was make sure your “heil Hitler” was working properly”(Zusak 46) They were asked to wear uniforms and studied philosophy of Nazirism . From a young age, respect for the dictator was a must. . When Liesel’s family were on their way to the foster home , they witness “A few of the shops were abandoned and still labeled with yellow stars and anti-Jewish slurs”(Zusak 55). This was a requirement to do so inn the Nazi society. Soon after Jews were segregated from Germans. On the other hand the family had to conform to the majority in order to survive. Despite the conformation to the society, the Hubermamns did not believe in ideology of Nazi. That remains a secret from society because there are consequences if they go against the government.
The outcasts include “treason to the government” were treated with violence ,and majorities were obligated to believe in the government philosophy. When the age of being able to read, Hans encouraged Liesel to read Mein Kampf the book about Nazis ideology “And what trash is this girl reading? She should be reading Mein Kampf.(Zusak 106)” If the majority of did not follow the Nazi ideology there are deep consequeses. During the Nazi ruling, the philosophy for Nazism is strongly enforced from child hood. In order to not be suspected by the government, the families had to send their children to schools where Nazism is enforced, and reading Mein Kampf is strictly obligated. When retracing back to Lisel journey to the foster home, she saw the abandoned town of Molching also known as“The road of yellow stars”(Zusak 56). She was weeks late when “the night of the broken glass took place where people had to flee from their home just so Nazi can caputure them.
Germany was not in a good shape after World War I. Debt for reparation to other neighbouring countries. This makes food to be rationed ,and resources become limited. The Nazi eventually attacked Jews because they were comfortable when many Germans starved. Adolf Hitler was a man who was in prison for political charges. He wrote Mein Kampf “my struggles” Philosophy which consists of only white are the humans, and the rest are “aryans”. His dedication to German people won him over by the public. He blamed the Weiner government ,and the treaty of versailles which made Germans to be in debt. Eventually, Hitler destroyed the minorities in the country just to prove how powerful he was. This made the US involved in the war. This ultimately caused minorities to rescue from the camps.
Lord of the Flies is a perfectly allegory to the holocaust. A leader, Jack, who ruled with fear and violence has many followers due to his physical appearance and bravery. Also he is manipulative and turned his followers to savagery. A leader, Ralph, who was more progressive had only few people to follow his ideas. Piggy who created sensible decisions was frowned upon and humiliated by the whole tribe. It was only valued when he was killed by the Jack’s tribe.
Eventually Jack fired the whole island to kill Ralph. The smoke made it visible to the rescue boat. This is ironic because Ralph was the one who suggested having fire at the top of the mountain. Eventually, they all were saved based on his idea.
During the pandemic of Coronavirus 2020, there are some similarities of World War II. The leader have strong opinions on minorities. The food, toilet paper, cleaning supplies were rationed. People have to wear personal protection equipment to help stop the spread of the virus. Frontline workers like doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists urge people to stay home. However, some people protest against the suggestion that it is “killing the economy” just by staying home. The asian people are targeted in the US even the president called this virus “Chinese Virus” with no regrets. This made xenophobia to be forced. All asians are often threatened or attacked because some people assumed they “brought” the virus. The labs are developing a vaccine but it is still a long way to be created. During this time people had been fighting their won battle to survive this pandemic. These both situations were/are had to be saved by someone. This involves cooperation.
