Education is the act or process of gaining broad knowledge and increasing one’s ability to reason and judge. It also refers to the process of preparing oneself or others for a vocation. It is also an act of passing on knowledge to others and gaining knowledge from others, particularly our teachers.
Face-to-face classes are the conventional method of instruction in which the instructor and students of a nonprofit educational institution meet in a space dedicated to instruction and where teaching and learning occur simultaneously. All performances and exhibits of work are permitted in this type of context. Students are better able to concentrate on their studies since they are more at ease and learn more easily in a typical classroom setting. They’re all free to show and share their skills and talents with others, as long as they also build their confidence and socialize.
According to bworldonline.com, students are held accountable for their progress at the class’s designated meeting date and time in face-to-face learning. Additionally, it provides a better grasp and retention of lecture information, as well as an opportunity for class participants to bond with one another. This method of instruction allows a learner and an instructor to engage in real-time. It is the most popular method of traditional educational teaching. Learners can also benefit from more interaction with their classmates, but that was changed when the news broadcast a life-threatening virus called “COVID-19”. Some countries are unconcerned about the virus, while others are ready for it. Until one day, a drastic change happened. Unfortunately, the Philippines is one of the countries that has had a lot of cases of COVID-19 affected up until now.
In the year 2019, the economy was collapsed by the pandemic, and one of the most affected sector was education. The face-to-face learning modality was suddenly changed into the latest new learning modality, which is the modular distance learning modality and online learning modality, because it is the best option to continue the learning process of every student to avoid transmission of the COVID-19 virus.
Students and even teachers really suffer adjusting their time, knowledge, and understanding with this kind of modality. Students find it difficult to deal with this kind of learning system. They don’t have enough knowledge about the lessons they are encountering at their level because of the lack of instructions and responses from their subject teachers, but they are trying their very best to cope with this situation.
Some are struggling to adjust to this kind of learning system and encounter difficulties due to the poor internet connectivity and noisy environment, while some others have a hard time adjusting due to lack of motivation, financial problems, and distractions. But some of the students find this kind of modality easier than before, as it helps them conserve money as they pay for public transportation, have flexible time, and especially enjoy having quality time with their family and loved ones.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims to know the effects of modular learning modality on the academic performance of grade 11 STEM-B students of Marcial O. Rañola Memorial School. Specifically, it aims to address the following questions:
1. How does modular learning modality affect the academic performance of senior high school students?
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of modular learning modality on the academic performance of senior high school students?
3. How can students maintain their academic performances now that they are learning in a modular approach, as opposed to the traditional way of learning?
4. How does student’s performance from modular learning modality differ from the old way of teaching?
Scope and Delimitation
This part of the study presents the scope and delimitation of the study. The researchers asked permission from the respondents, who stated that all data and information gathered were declared confidential.
The focus of this study is to determine the effects of a modular learning modality on the academic performance of grade 11 STEM-B students. The study will not cover other distance learning modalities like online distance learning, TV-Video-based instructions, radio-based instruction, and blended distance learning. The research also limits its respondents to grade 11-STEM-B students at Marcial O. Rañola Memorial School who took the modular learning modality. There will be fifty (50) respondents from STEM-B to take part in answering the survey questionnaire and to be retrieved right after answering the survey questionnaire distributed by the researcher.
Significance of the Study
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of modular learning modality on the academic performance of grade 11 STEM-B students. Furthermore, the results of the study will be of great benefit to the following:

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
During the COVID-19 epidemic, this study looked at how the environment influences senior high school students’ academic achievement. This study used thematicization to highlight qualitative approaches in determining the environmental issues that senior high school students confront in their online classrooms, as well as their coping mechanisms.

Challenges of online learning modality and modular learning modality
Financial constraints, according to Manalo (2020), impede preparedness for online distance learning. Mobile phones, laptops, desktops, and other devices must meet certain standards. As a result, the upgrade will cost money. Because there is no more cash, teachers do not have the most appropriate devices to run an online distance learning program. Financial difficulties are at the foundation of the instruction-related challenge in online distance learning.
The first issue, according to Mayol (2020), is that teachers themselves feel that having reliable internet access is a major challenge in delivering their courses. In terms of professional development and support for instructors, according to De Villa and Manalo (2020), As education shifts to a new normal, teachers make the required preparations to be prepared for distance learning.
Related Studies
Effects of social networking sites on students’ academic performance
Karpinski (2009) discovered that the use of social media sites, particularly Facebook, is inversely connected with grade point averages (GPAs), She noticed that non-users have a better GPA than users than the people who visit these websites. Furthermore, the study discovered that 68 percent of Facebook users had significantly lower GPAs than those who did not use Facebook. SNSs (social networking sites) were not used.
The most intriguing finding was that 79 percent of Facebook users denied any negative consequences from their use. Based on their GPAs, it indicates they are unaware that their networking habits have an impact on their academic achievement.
As a result, their academic performance must be well managed, without losing sight of all the variables that can influence the outcome, positively or negatively, and affect their academic achievement. For example, Facebook has a massive impact in terms of influence and is becoming increasingly powerful.
Definition of Terms
Constraints- a limitation or restriction
Courses- a set of classes or plans of study on a particular subject.

CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents and discusses the designs and methodology to be used in this study. It also includes the complete details of the sources of data, respondents, research instruments, and data gathering procedures that were applied.
Research Design
This study employed the qualitative method in gathering information regarding the effects of the modular learning modality on the academic performance of grade 11 STEM-B students. The researchers will use the case study method. As a case study, it will be defined and described as an intensive study of units that aims to be generalized over several units. The researchers examine the systematic investigation of a single individual and as a whole group. It allowed the researchers to explain and comprehend the behavior in detail.
Sources of Data
The primary sources of data in this study are survey questionnaires and observations. The secondary sources of data in this study are articles, websites, and government records.
Respondents of the Study
The researchers considered the 11 STEM-B students at Marcial O. Rañola Memorial School of 56 members, male and female. They were the chosen respondents since those students are some of the learners who are mostly experiencing and coping with modular learning modalities to continue their studies. Moreover, these students used to be more dependent on the traditional way of learning than the new learning modality.
Research Instruments
The research instrument to be used in conducting this study is the questionnaire survey type. The questionnaire consisted of items that determine the effects of the modular learning modality on the academic performance of grade 11 STEM-B students.
The research adviser will be the one who validates the survey questionnaires to have quality control of the survey.
Data Gathering Procedure
The researchers personally administered the research instruments to the respondents. They conferred and discussed the significance of the study and how to properly accomplish the distribution of instruments.
The respondents were given 15 minutes to complete the forms to prevent them from giving hasty responses.
After the questionnaire had been completed, the results were tallied and tabulated. These datasets become the basis of analysis and interpretation.
