Introduction

Namibia is a diverse country, and is one of the developing countries in Africa which leads to a high use of energy basically to produce electricity and energy which is a resource which can be able to produce work has become very important. Our country is having many natural resources, as the country keeps on developing some people with more knowledge about these resources came up with the idea of how to harness and use these resources. The main idea of these people was to use these resources to produce electricity. Many places where found where these resources can be found and used. Electricity has become the most used source mankind has ever used in history since it was discovered and there is a high need to use and most of all our work we do daily basically depends on electricity. As the years keep on going many places where these energy sources can be found where discovered and until this day many places are still being found. This assay compares the two different sources of energy in our country and how they can be used to produce electricity.  

The importance of electricity

Electricity has become very important in Namibia, and is widely used by every citizen in the country, and is mainly used in homes, schools, hospitals, universities and many more places. ( Brown, Bursten & Langford 2002) states that electrical energy is used to drive our machinery, to operate our computing and communications systems, to power our transportation vehicles and to keep us warm in winter and cool in summer. Electricity helps us in many ways like to produce light in our homes, helps us to communicate with people from distant places, to cook food, and produce many tools that we widely use like (David & Robert 2003) the capacitor, which is a device in which electrical energy can be stored for example batteries, these are just a few examples of the importance of electricity. Without electricity we hardly survive, imagine living without using your phone or the internet. So electricity is very important it makes our work and lives much easier. As our country develops some of our energy sources are depleting, so over the years some new plans had been made to produce electricity using clean methods that do not do any harm to our environment. The methods chosen were using water and sunlight. Many places where discovered where these resources can be used and many of those places are still being found. Some of the cites where electricity can be produced are not just used for electricity generation, these places also attract tourists from different countries, this can be very beneficial as it can bring in foreign currency which can help to improve our country`s economy and it can also bring job opportunities for unemployed people. Some of the power stations that we have can also supply electricity to other countries which can also bring in foreign currency from different countries into our country.

Hydro-electric energy in Namibia

One of the energy sources found in Namibia was hydro-electric energy. Our country has a very large water-fall called Ruacana water-fall and it gets its water from the Kunene River which is found at the north western part of our country. Large turbines where constructed at the water-fall, as the water falls on the turbines it will drive them. As the water falls on the blades of the turbines they will start to spin, as the process continues the potential energy in the water will be converted to kinetic energy on the turbines then to electrical energy in the generator, as the turbines turn it will activate a generator which will produce electricity. Raucana hydro-electric power station as it is called produces 40% of our country`s electricity (kambowe 2016). This power station produces large megawatts of electricity in each house in some parts of our country and also this power station was constructed in the early 1970`s. Hydro electric energy is also one of the cleanest ways to generate electricity without causing any harm to the environment; it is also renewable and efficient. Some hydroelectric power stations are still being constructed around the country, some are being constructed at the coast of the country and they will be using tides from the sea to produce electricity which will be used to supply electricity to the entire nation tidal power is also renewable, efficient and does not produce in type of pollution to the environment.

Solar energy in Namibia

Solar energy was also one of the energy sources found to be able to produce electricity in Namibia. Solar cells tend to absorb sunlight. (Susannah 2008) explains that when light get absorbed, and one of the electrons that is in one of the bonds gets excited up to a higher energy level and can move around more freely than when it was bound, that electron then move around the crystal in the solar cell and electricity t in here…
