The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight loss, and Long-term Health, by Thomas Colin Campbell and Thomas M. Campbell, offers an important nutritional perspective on the comparison of plant-based diets with animal-based diets. The China Study examines the effects of animal protein intake on cancer risk and suggests improving your overall health by consuming a plant based diet.  Prior to the China Study, it was difficult for researchers to conduct a study on the comparison of the diets because of needing populations to study. During the 1980’s, much of Chinese population had diets that generally corresponded with their unique geographical location. The China Study, further explains that Campbell believes health is a matter of nutrition- not medicine. Campbell also elaborates on his belief that animal-based protein is more likely to be a carcinogen than a plant-based protein. Lastly, Campbell offers advice in regards of protein consumption- we don’t need as much protein as one may think.

I found The China Study to be interesting and I do believe that there is some validity to Campbells claims supporting plant-based diets. Vegetarian diets still fulfill the recommended dietary guidelines despite avoiding the consumption of meat. Plant-based diets have a wide variety of choices in terms of protein such as nuts, lentils, and tofu to name a few. Individuals following plant-based diets can achieve proper nutrition without consuming meat.  I also believe that proper nutrition is just as important as medicine as Campbell explains. Dr. Wanda Nicholson explains in Time Magazine, that healthcare professionals should be counseling their patients to eat healthy, well-balanced diets that are rich in nutrients instead of recommending dietary supplements. Attentiveness to our personal diets is important and Campbell’s study provokes reflection through his dietary suggestions.

Despite finding some validity in Campbell’s claims, I found myself questioning the carcinogen links in animal protein. With any diet or action- there are consequences. Some of the consequences will have positive outcomes, while others negative. The consumption of meat and the cancerous links can be argued as more of a statistical debate than it is evaluating clear evidence. It is difficult to pinpoint a cancer diagnosis onto one source like the consumption of meat. Other environmental and genetic factors contribute to the development and the body’s response to cancer making it difficult to place blame on animal-proteins. I understand Campbell’s position on encouraging a plant-based diet and I also find the concept of limiting animal-protein intake to be reasonable nutritional perspective. However, I find it difficult to support an all or nothing approach in terms of his dietary recommendations because there is a lack of evidence supporting the carcinogen link to animal-based protein.

Another claim of Campbell’s in The China Study that I found myself questioning was that heart disease could not only be prevented but the damage could also be reversed by a healthy diet. The AHA/ACC Guideline on Lifestyle Management to Reduce Cardiovascular Risk, encourages heart-healthy nutrition and physical activity behaviors, but does not indicate that the damage could be reversed. A heart-healthy diet can aid in prevention, but even a heart conscious diet like the DASH diet still allows the use of animal-based protein within the balanced diet. I agree with Campbell, that prevention is possible, but there is a lack of evidence supporting the complete reversal of cardiovascular disease by simple dietary changes. Other medical interventions would have to be further studied and would be necessary in order to reverse the cardiovascular damage.

Campbell’s The China Study offers an intriguing nutritional perspective favoring plant-based diets instead of animal-based diets. His work contributes a great deal to the field of nutrition because it explains health as a matter of nutrition- not medicine. Nutrition is a key component that should be a consideration of all health care professionals and individuals in terms of taking control of their personal health. This book caters to health care professionals and the general public because it encourages individual accountability and also calls for further research as well. Even when Campbell elaborates on his belief that animal-based protein is more likely to be a carcinogen than a plant-based protein. He explains his findings and this can encourage people to take this information and apply it to their own diets or it encourages others in the field of nutrition to do further research on this particular topic. The China Study offers an interesting nutritional perspective and is an important contribution in the field of nutrition.
