Introduction:
The purpose of this report is to look into the misuse of computers in the computer lab. The report will also recommend preventive measure for computer network usage and bringing food and beverages into the computer lab.
Background
A recent study on the misuse of the college network Wi-Fi and computer lab in SEGI College Kuching (Sep, 2016), shows that nearly 80% of the time, students uses the internet to watch YouTube, Surf Facebook and browse non-related information other than their subjects. Computer labs are also being misuse by students to download music, Movies/Videos, Pirated software and playing LAN games such as CS (Counter Strike) and DOTA (Defence of the Ancient).
Method of investigation
We have set up a monitoring and network managing software to the main server of the college. So that we can have an accurate statistic on what most of the students usually browse. Since Students must sign into their college ID, we are able to track down which faculty are the most problematic.
Objectives
Because of this issue, the supervisor of the collage has leaded a team of 4 (Daniel, Ferdinand, I Ting and Timothy) to look into the problem and create a preventive measure on all 4 major problems on the misuse of network and collage computers.
The problems are:-
I. Do a thorough research on how to set up a network management system to monitor the network usage of students.
II. Prevent students from using the network for playing games, streaming movies, downloading big files
III. Write a simple policy on the action to take against any student
IV. Solve this issue to prevent students damaging the computers, accidentally or intentionally, in the lab
Preventive measures
Set up VPN (Virtual Private Network) to certain websites, thus restricting students from assessing certain website that the collage won’t allow.
Install firewall to protect the VPN client from getting hack, thus only Authorize staff can access and update the VPN client.
Security Infrastructure:-
• The VPN server is attached to the Internet and the firewall is between the VPN server and the intranet.
• The firewall is attached to the Internet and the VPN server is between the firewall and the intranet.

Policies
i. Students are required to show their Student I.D. cards to the Lab Assistant after entering the PC lab or at whatever point requested. The Students ought to put his University ID on the table before him.
ii. It is not allowed for someone to use your ID and Password.
iii. Students who need to do Assignments have priority over Students doing self-work including playing games or surfing the net. Consequently, the lab Assistant has the privilege to request that any client free the PC for others.
iv. PCs left unattended for a time of 10 minutes or more will be cleared and made accessible to different Students.
v. Students are in charge of their own things while in the PC labs.
vi. Students are not allowed to install, remove or alter the pc Settings unless has permission to do it.
vii. Headset must be worn when listening to music or videos while inside the labs.
viii. Group working is not permitted inside Computer Labs since it is not intended for such acts to permit more students utilizing the labs.
Conclusion
With all of the 4 major problems being tackled, we sincerely hope that most of the students from SEGI Collage Kuching will now concentrate more on their study and use the computer labs and collage Wi-Fi with full benefits to complete or find useful information regarding their collage work. With the new policy has been applied, we hope that we have reduce the danger of computer trip and much cleaner environment to work with.
