Forming: They are assigned to a five year mission of seeking out life forms, and forming ties with the federation. In the movie, they take on a dispatch mission and attempt to rescue stranded aliens on a nearby uncharted nebula (Altamid). They aren’t worried or nervous about working with each other, because the film takes place three years after they’ve been assigned their prime directive.

“We make a good team, right?” Captain Kirk asks his second officer, Mr. Spock as they ride an elevator. He firmly believes in their teamwork and friendship, and is committed to the prime directive. Captain Kirk trusts Scotty enough to keep the ship intact during their trip to Altamid while an alien invasion takes place. Krall asks Uhura (on Altamid) why he sacrificed herself for him and explains he would have done the same (commitment and trust are elements of a team).

Storming: Nyota Uhura and Spock’s break up causes some tension. She tries to give his mother’s necklace back, but Spock refuses, saying it’s against his culture. Spock dumped her because Ambassador Spock at New Vulcan has died, and he believes he needs to take his place in order for his species to thrive. McCoy to Spock, “When a girl says ’It’s not you, it’s me,’ it’s definitely you.” Despite relationship drama, both are committed to the main and dispatch mission.

Captain Kirk also doubts his leadership skills and wants Spock to take his place. He thinks Spock is more qualified (may overlap with Norming).

On their way to the nebula, Chekov and Sulu address upcoming storms that may affect travel, while Scotty tries to keep the enterprise from breaking apart while their ship is invaded by Krall’s team. The Enterprise enlists people who are capable of all sorts of things like communication, engineering, medicine, and leadership (diversity of capabilities).

Sulu is able to act as captain while Kirk tries to fight off invaders, while Scotty is more than willing to try anything (pill wires, plug things together) in order to fix the ship (adaptability). Sulu and Chekov mention the ship’s structure is falling and emergency systems are failing, despite Scotty’s efforts to slow it down. (communication).

McCoy and Spock crash their escape pod into the ground and Spock is injured. “The forced optimism in your voice suggests that you are trying to elicit a sense of calm in order to-“ Spock

“I’ll cut the horseshit.” McCoy (communication)

“Doctor, I fail to see how excrement of any kind bears relevance to our current situation.” Spock tries to get up despite his punctured iliac region, but McCoy warns him against that. McCoy manages to sharpen a scalpel with a phaser and removes a piece of scrap metal from Spock’s side (adaptability). They both know they can’t waste too much time. They both know the others need their help (communication).

Sulu and Uhura discover Krall’s been watching them this whole time through Starlet technology while they send a distress signal.

Jaylah knows where the crew is being held hostage but she is afraid to go back because she fears death. Scotty reassures her that his group won’t give up on her.

Norming:

Kirk tells Scotty to do what he can in order to keep the Enterprise from breaking down (commitment and trust)

After being unable to pull away from the planet’s gravity, Kirk orders everyone to abandon ship and they arrive at Altamid. Kirk and Chekov find each other and meet an alien (Kalara), and she helps them find what’s left of the Enterprise. Kirk and Chekov find the console still intact and tries to reroute power to it (adaptability).

Kalara turns out to be a traitor and working for Krall, and was ordered by him to retrieve the artifact Kirk almost gave away at the beginning of the movie. (overlaps with storming)

Scotty arrives and finds an alien girl (Jaylah). He agrees to fix her ship (USS Franklin) if she helps him find his friends (communication).

Uhura and Sulu appreciate Keenser’s cold, as he sneezes on a lock and the door opens. They escape before the next guard rotation and find a magellan probe (they use it to travel through the nebula). Uhura and Sulu run off to a computer system and she tries to hack the computer. Uhura discovers Krall has been piggybacking subspace links between probes and Sulu asks if they can use it to send a distress signal  (may overlap with performing). Eventually they get caught by Krall’s guards.

The crew has known each other a long time so of course they are already aware of each other’s talents and capabilities.

Kalara admits Krall wants the artifact because he wants, “To save you, from yourselves.”

“There’s strength in unity.” Uhura to Krall (commitment and trust).

Spock reveals he hasn’t told Kirk he’s leaving StarFleet and moving to New Vulcan, and McCoy say’s Kirk would be crushed. He says Kirk wouldn’t know what to do without Spock.

Scotty discovers Jaylah’s music tastes, as she blasts “Fight The Power” while working. He finds her clever for finding out how to work the music.

Scotty comments Jaylah for her work on the Franklin when they meet up with Kirk and Chekov. She was able to get the ship running smoothly despite the problems she had with it. Jaylah also installed image refractors which kept people from discovering the ship. (diversity of capabilities)

After Scotty asks for permission from the Captain at the Franklin for an idea, McCoy tries to reach out to the Enterprise through his communicator. He tries to look out for Spock in the meantime.

“Leaving me behind will significantly increase your chances of survival, Doctor.” Spock

“Well that’s damn chivalrous of you, but completely out of the question.” McCoy

“It is imperative that you locate any surviving crew.”

“And here I was thinking you cared.”

“Of course I care, Leonard. I always assumed my respect for you was clear. The dialogue we have had across the years has always-”

“It’s okay, Spock. You don’t have to say it.” (communication, commitment and trust)

When Spock and McCoy get beamed up and reunited with the others, they all come together to realize the stolen artifact came from Altamid. Spock is still hurt but he can still find hope in the impossible (defeating Krall and getting back to their prime directive).

Performing:

Kirk, Chekov, McCoy, and Spock decide to head to Krall’s base with Chekov’s co-ordinates, and when he reconfigures the search parameters in order to compensate for a Vokaya formula (a mineral used in tracking devices). Uhura is wearing a Vokaya necklace. They wanted to use her necklace to track her and surviving crew members down. They find her location and match it to Chekov’s co-ordinates.

Jaylah shows them a tunnel at Krall’s base where she escapes, and they use that as an entrance. They want to break in and break the crew out, with the Franklin ready to beam up 20 people at a time. (communication and trust).

Krall uses the artifact to complete his bioweapon and destroy people. And as the Enterprise battles his crew, they figure out they attack using radio signals and they use a Beastie Boys song to combat their frequency and destroy almost their entire fleet. Karl crashes into Yorktown (the base where Uhura and Spock broke up). Krall exacts his revenge on the Federation (because he was the original captain of the Franklin who crashed through a wormhole and got stranded) because he believes StarFleet gave up on him. Kirk goes after Krall and ejects him and the weapon out of Yorktown before Krall blows himself up.

Adjourning:

They complete the mission, celebrate Kirk’s birthday, and go back to the prime directive of space exploration and forming ties with new planets and aliens. Kirk decides to remain captain, while Spock and Uhura get back together. And Jaylah enlists in StarFleet academy.
