The Law of Magnetism

• Almost all leaders have an ideal type of person they would like to work for them.

• The qualities leaders expect in their employees is the same qualities the leaders possess.

• If your people exhibit the same characteristics and work ethic as you, they will most likely follow you.

• The Law of Magnetism abides by the people who are drawn to leaders who they respect and share values with.

• Although followers have differences, there are more similarities between each other and these qualities make each person individual.

• It is common for leaders and followers to be of the same generation and age group because they are able to easily relate to one another.

• The similar age groups are usually found department to department and even across the entire company.

• Those who have similarities in attitude and behavior group together, especially when it comes to negativity and positivity.

• In the workplace, being that attitudes can be contagious, attitudes can be ‘rubbed off’ and spread within departments.

• The spreading of attitudes causes people to become similar in behavior on a daily basis.

• When positivity is spread, those surrounding become more optimistic and happier, meanwhile, negativity causes people to feel more somber and unmotivated.

• Race, education, and wealth cause employers to relate to peoples’ backgrounds.

• When there is a similarity in their backgrounds, followers feel more comfortable and drawn to their leader.

• Hiring because of background similarities can be positive at times, but it causes problems within discrimination and diversity.

• People are attracted to leaders who have the same or similar values as their own even if they are negative.

• Not only will you attract those who have the same values, but you are also looking for those people because you probably possess the same ones.

• If a leader is described as someone who has a lot of energy, they would want someone who is energetic and exciting because a person with low-energy could be viewed as boring and lazy.

• Although everyone looks for talent in a leader, every leader has a special quality that a follower seeks.

• While talent is a popular quality to possess, the value of a person’s talent can be viewed as important and unimportant in the exchange of leaders and followers.

• It is common to search for strong leaders when you are a strong leader because they have the same leadership style.

• If you feel like you do not have similarities with those who work for you, it is an opportunity to reflect and improve your leadership style.

• The revaluation of what you value and seek is important if you do not even like your employees.

• There is always room to improve your character in order to benefit yourself and your people.

• If you are completely satisfied with those who follow you, take initiative in another aspect by hiring those who can battle your differences.

• Followers who possess your differences can allow you to value all types of people and live your potential.

• This process should not be forced too strongly because there is a natural attraction in The Law of Magnetism.

• Throughout the recruiting process and seeking similarities, the most important quality is respect and faith in you as a leader and the company itself.

My takeaway: I related this chapter to my life, not only in my job but in my friendships and family. A leader’s followers are like your friends- the people you have chosen to attract. If you see negativity, jealousy, etc. in your friends it is likely that you possess these qualities. This allows you to reflect and reevaluate your values and behavior. In business, the recruitment of a negative person and the failure to remove the toxicity can affect your entire life and organization if it spreads throughout your people. I asked myself many times, “What is important to you?” I see love and positivity in almost everyone around me and if someone exhibits a quality that I do not see fit, I choose to separate myself from that person. The behavior you exhibit is the behavior you attract. The Law of Magnetism is very important because it doesn’t necessarily relate to success in power or money, it allows people to develop relationships successfully with their superior. Meanwhile, those who are in a powerful position must recruit and seek those who share important characteristics and leadership potential.

The Law of Connection

• A leader’s values in certain instances can cause crucially important moments in their leadership.

• It is important to listen to your heart before you listen to your brain.

• The relaying of a list of facts may be less heard than a story that may involve comedic relief and emotions.

• The act of relating to people with emotion causes them to follow you with action.

• The Law of Connection is the literal emotional connection between you and your people with whom you are trying to relate.

• The Law of Connection is an instinct for truly great leaders whose goal is to move people.

• Your goal as a leader is to make people laugh in a time where there are unfortunate events or great tragedy

• Great leaders can move an entire organization the same way they could affect an individual.

• The binding relationships you create with your people are crucial in times of hardships in an organization.

• A leader’s intelligence and credibility could be measured after people know how much they genuinely care.

• The level of dread your people feel when you have arrived is a sign to evaluate your level of care for them.

• Seeing the needs and values of individuals in an organization instead of a whole is a quality of a great leader.

• The way to connect with people is pretend you are talking to one person when talking to thousands.

• The strong connection between a leader and a follower allows both to feel they have something to offer to one another.

• Before you can connect to others, you must be able to connect with yourself and believe in yourself.

• Your confidence and direction allow others to have the same desires to follow your direction.

• It is almost impossible to connect with people without sincerity by developing scripted relationships.

• The knowledge about individuals’ values and beliefs allows you to know your audience as a whole and individually.

• Once you know about each person and what they value, you can talk to them about what is important to them, not only what is important to you.

• Do not just say what people want to hear, say what you feel and what you know you can carry-out

• While physical barriers can cause separation between you and your people, the way you communicate can also act as a barrier if you do not know how to relate to them.

• Before you think that what you have to say is important, think about the importance of others’ beliefs.

• What leaders have to say should allow their listeners to reflect on themselves to see their true beliefs.

• Along with reflection, what a leader says and does should give people hope in their future.

• Great leaders initiate connections with their people because it is not just the responsibility of the followers.

• If a leader simply waits for their people to come to them, less and less important connections would be made.

• The act of convincing someone to believe you are out of desperation because you failed to connect with them.

• Relationships and connections should be initiated by the leader prior to them following you as a leader.

• The efficiency of an organization represents the effort put in by a leader to make connections with his/her people.

• People follow the goals and visions of their leader who they have a strong relationship with.

My takeaway: Before you can ask people to follow your aspirations, you must evaluate what you value. Your self-awareness should be measured prior to asking the question, “Who wants to follow me?” If you are not aware of what you value, how will anyone else believe the same things? The importance of developing connections throughout an organization should not be taken advantage of because there is an incredible amount of benefits. Your people will value what you say and be available for help and assistance when needed. Not only does it benefit you as a leader, but it also benefits everyone because everyone’s needs are listened to. Leaders should not just say what is expected of them because people follow those who genuinely care about what they are saying and are aware of how it affects every part of the whole. Great leaders utilize their strengths in order to develop healthy and strong connections and relationships.
