Intro – What was the Main Idea?
Growth, time and change have been analysed by Gil Junger in a critical manner in the film “10 Things I Hate About You”, this movie is based on William Shakespeare’s late 16th-century comedy “The Taming Of The Shrew.” The film mainly revolves around three words, Growth, Time and Change. You may dislike someone but after a while, this is where growth plays its part, that person will eventually grow on you. Time, it is important but no one ever has enough. Everyone undergoes change, either it is for someone, something or some reason, everyone will develop over time and change will eventually occur. Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) and Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles) and other cast portray the 3 key aspects of this film, it is shown multiple areas of the film, introduced from the beginning and stayed put till the end. These 3 main ideas have been explored by Gil Junger in the movie “10 Things I Hate About You.”
Para 1 – How did the director use a visual technique to harvest that idea
Gil Junger displays many mid shots that portray the change of feelings over time from the perspective of one person towards another in the film. This shot type unveils the emotional feeling, body movement and can also focus on relationships. In “10 Things I Hate About You” this mid shot also displays the change over time that has been implemented and the growth in the characters personalities. An example of a mid shot occurs in the final third of the movie with Patrick and Kat. Patrick’s body language in this mid shot is quite visibly showing him regretting his decision for Kat. Patrick’s was facing down, his shoulders were dropped and eyes were barely open, these are clear signs from his body to express his sorrow. In all honesty, Gil Junger used mid shots to really show how the characters felt emotionally and what their bodies would react like, it also showed that with the right amount of time change will occur and the characters will grow to realize what a person actually means to them. Patrick and Kat’s relationship is a prime example of this. Mid shots were implemented in the film by Gil Junger to express the change over time and the growth that occurred in the teens.
Para 2 – How did the director use some verbal techniques to reinforce that idea (look at music)
Gil Junger used many verbal techniques in the movie “10 Things I Hate About You,” music, in particular, was used. Music in this film creates the right atmosphere, gives more attention to the key elements of the movie and defines the emotion and thoughts of the characters. A song in the film called “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” is a prime example of a verbal technique being put into use. The song is filled with Patrick’s emotion towards Kat and expresses how much he wants to be with her, it also creates a scene of Kat showing her affection towards Patrick and eventually growing over time and to change her feelings towards him. The music used in the film demonstrates what the character really feels like and what their thought process is. The use of music was used by Gil Junger to show how feelings towards someone can change over time.
Para 3 – How was change implemented in the main character (once again reinforcing the main idea)
Kat Stratford being the main character in the movie “10 Things I Hate About You” had change implemented to her. Kat had obviously faced difficulties throughout her life and was first presented to the audience as an aggressive girl. Her style of thinking about people was completely different from others, she kept her circle small and didn’t let others misuse her. This was the situation until Patrick was introduced to her life, he slowly started to change Kat’s style of thinking about people, he loosened her up. The change occurred with her overtime when she grew by hanging out Patrick. Unfortunately for Kat, Patrick’s first intentions weren’t great, he was only in it for the money, this further changed when he also fell in love with her. Kat went from being such an aggressive person to being a bit more relaxed towards others, she still kept her personality but she changed the way she thought about people. She really grew over time and had a major change in her life. The change implemented to Kat was mainly done by Patrick, whether it was for the good or bad.
Conclusion – Sum up key points
To conclude, the film “10 Things I hate about You” revolves around these three main ideas, growth, time and change. These three words are what the entire film is based on. Growth, time and change are what the film really analyzes with the characters. Gil Junger used various techniques to display these key ideas. He used mid shots, music and other various techniques to unveil growth, time and change. The movie really showed what high school life is like and how the key ideas are what also happens in reality. Everyone grows, changes and it happens over time. Overall Gil Junger presented the film “10 Things I Hate About You” in a beautiful manner and displayed growth, time and change wonderfully.
