This book looks to examine and identify heroism and how it is defined within the twenty-first century. It also looks into Harry Potter and the themes and tropes used to define and explain masculinity and heroism. Harry Potter is known for his courage and his heroism, using these definitions of heroism and how it affects Potter and what he thinks is right even though everyone else may think it is reckless.
Fostering Group Thinking.
Brilhart, John K. “Fostering Group Thinking.” Today’s Speech, vol. 8, no. 2, Apr. 1960, pp. 9–19.
This article looks into what successful group thinking is and what it entails. Looking at specific goals and how the group is going to reach that goal. The trio and all of the good side of Harry Potter has a main goal of coming together to defeat the Dark Lord, just like Voldemort’s goal is to rule the wizarding world, knowing how the end of the story ends, looking at the successful way of thinking and applying that to how both groups successfully or unsuccessfully think and achieve their end goals.
Detecting Groupthink: Methods for Observing The Illusion of Unanimity.
Cline, Rebecca J.Welch. “Detecting Groupthink: Methods for Observing The Illusion of Unanimity.” Communication Quarterly, vol. 38, no. 2, Spring 1990, pp. 112–126.
This article looks more into the defining and explanation of the groupthink theory. They also look at groupthink as an analytic framework and the conditions and guides. I am going to use the sections where they specify what groupthink is to better knowledge my reader on what I am writing about.

Crysel, et al. “Harry Potter and the Measures of Personality: Extraverted Gryffindors, Agreeable Hufflepuffs, Clever Ravenclaws, and Manipulative Slytherins.” Personality and Individual Differences, vol. 83, no. C, 2015, pp. 174–179.
This journal article looks at the different houses and how they explain aspects of your identity. I also looks int how characters from the book identify with their houses through characteristics and how real humans identify with their houses and adapt characteristics. Looking into what hoses each character are from and what those characteristics they adopt will help define their actions and decisions.

Dorigato, Laura, et al. “Knowing, Unknowing, Believing Stances and Characters’ Dialogic Identities in the Harry Potter Books.” Language & Dialogue, vol. 5, no. 1, Mar. 2015, pp. 62–89.
This journal article looks at characters identities within the Harry Potter franchise and how they develop and construct those identities. They also look into their knowledge and how it supports their roles within the story and their identity. Using a deeper look into each characters identity is going to help with how they act in the group setting.

Faulkner, Frank J. “Can I Play with Madness? The Psychopathy of Evil, Leadership and Political Mis-Management.” At the Interface / Probing the Boundaries, vol. 63, Jan. 2011, pp. 274–286.
This journal article looks at the psychopathy of evil leadership in humans but also in fictional characters. How through words and the way certain groups are informed can lead to evil characters wreaking havoc and mass destruction. I specifically want to look at the fictional characters in this article to chordate it with how Voldemort acts and creates mass destruction.
Examining the Symptoms of Groupthink and Retrospective Sensemaking.
Henningsen, David Dryden, et al. “Examining the Symptoms of Groupthink and Retrospective Sensemaking.” Small Group Research, vol. 37, no. 1, Feb. 2006, pp. 36–64.
This article looks at the two way individuals can sue confidence to help their group. This article also looks into when groups make bad decisions and how sense making occurs through those decisions and also their performance. The group relies on confidence part of the time, but also makes poor decision in the process, I want to use what the authors saying and apply that direct to the actions from the characters in the Harry Potter books.
Groupthink and individual thinking
Keltner, John W. “‘GROUPTHINK’ And Individual Thinking.” Today’s Speech, vol. 5, no. 2, Apr. 1957
This source deals with the idea of thinking individually while one is in a group setting. The article also discusses the they way all of the members of the group play off of each other in their communication aspects and also the idea that many group members with a problem helps the “thinking machine”. I want to specifically use the “entering a discussion” portion and the “process of thinking within a group” section.
The Roles of Group Importance and Anxiety in Predicting Depersonalized Ingroup Trust.
Kenworthy, Jared B., and Jennifer Jones. “The Roles of Group Importance and Anxiety in Predicting Depersonalized Ingroup Trust.” Group Processes & Intergroup Relations, vol. 12, no. 2, Mar. 2009, pp. 227–230.
In this journal article, the researches examined the different divots of individuals in group settings and how they coincides with anxiety and trust within groups. This experiment also looks at how when anxiety occurs within group decision making, trust seems to become throw out the window. With the Haro Potter franchise, many of the situations they are presented with are anxiety inducing and it is interesting to see how the study plays out what fictional events.
The psychology of Harry Potter: an unauthorized examination of the boy who lived
Mulholland, Neil. The Psychology of Harry Potter: an Unauthorized Examination of the Boy Who Lived. BenBella Books : Distributed by Independent Publishers Group, 2006.
This book takes a psychological approach to the entire series as a whole but also looks into smaller ideas such as mental illness and the depths of the characters created by JK Rowling herself. The book also looks into the school of Hogwarts and how it functions, Harry as a whole and things that are learned from Harry. I want to specifically use the “intergroup conflict in the world of harry potter” section, “defense against the real dark arts” and “resisting social influence” sections from this book.
Harry Potter And the Sorcerer’s Stone
Rowling, J. K., author. Harry Potter And the Sorcerer’s Stone. New York :Arthur A. Levine Books, 1998. Print.
This book is the first book in the Harry Potter franchise. We are introduced into the wizarding world and to the boy who lived. The instance I am choosing to use from this book is the instance where Harry, Ron and Hermione decide to find the scorers stone and the decision making leading up to the actual expedition.
Harry Potter And the Chamber of Secrets
Rowling, J. K. Harry Potter And the Chamber of Secrets. New York :Scholastic, Inc., 2000. Print.
This is the second book in the Harry Potter franchise. This book is where we learn more about the chamber of secrets, the founders, distinctions between pure bloods and muggle born wizards and the introduction to Tom Riddle. I chose this book because to stay in the succession of the franchise and to see how their group communication has changed from book one to book two.
Harry Potter And the Prisoner of Azkaban
Rowling, J. K., author. Harry Potter And the Prisoner of Azkaban. New York :Arthur A. Levine Books, 1999. Print.
This is the third book in the Harry Potter franchise. This book is a turning point with jK Rowlings writing and the way she adds darker themes and elects into the book. There are two instances I want to use within the book, one being the first instance where the trio decide to go near the whomping willow and the second when Hermione and Harry use the time turner.
Harry Potter And the Goblet of Fire
Rowling, J. K., author. Harry Potter And the Goblet of Fire. New York :Scholastic, 2002. Print.
This is the fourth book in the Harry Potter franchise. This book introduces new schools for a tournament being held at Hogwarts. I chose to use this book since it is so rich in group communication and it going awry.
Harry Potter And the Order of the Phoenix
Rowling, J. K. Harry Potter And the Order of the Phoenix. New York :Listening Library, 2003.
This is the fifth book in the franchise and is not the last in the series. This book talks about prophecies and being the “chosen” one. I chose this book because it is interesting to see how they age in the books and how JK Rowling has aged in her writing, how they still communicate. Also, the ministry of magic scene is very rich in communication.
Binge Mode
Rubin, Mallory, Concepcion, Jason, Hosts. “BingeMode: Harry Potter”, iTunes app.
This podcasts is a deep dive into the Harry Potter books, film and the wider universe that JK Rowling has created. Each episode they take two to three chapters and look at central themes of the chapters and explain the little nuances that regular readers don’t see upon the first read. I chose to use this podcast because when they talk about this podcast as a whole, the central theme is choices and how Harry ends up with his choices. They dive deep into occasions in where his group and his choices can sometimes turn out chaotic.
Casting the Spell of Friendship: Bacon’s Tenets in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter.
Srihari, Meenakshi. “Casting the Spell of Friendship: Bacon’s Tenets in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter.” Language in India, vol. 17, no. 7, July 2017, pp. 297–303.
This source looks directly into the friendship themes of the Harry Potter franchise, while also looking at how friendship is portrayed within and throughout the series. It also compares the ideas of friendship to the way Francis Bacon looks into friendship through his essay “Of Friendship”. I want to look at what Bacon has to say about friendship specifically and apply that to how their outcomes and the choices they make during times of group thinking reflect their actions and decisions.
Introducing Communication Theory: Analysis and Application
“Groupthink.” Introducing Communication Theory: Analysis and Application, by Richard L. West and Lynn H. Turner, McGraw-Hill Education, 2014, pp. 251–270.\
This book focuses on different communication theories. It explains different aspects of communication and then theories within those main group. I want to focus on the Groupthink chapter.
The Ivory Tower and Harry Potter: perspectives on a literary phenomenon
Whited, Lana A. The Ivory Tower and Harry Potter: Perspectives on a Literary Phenomenon. University of Missouri Press, 2002.
This book analyzes and looks into all faucets of the Harry Potter Universe while also exploring the series magical predecessors. It also looks into topics such as gender issues, folklore and language. In this book I want to focus specifically on the second chapter, “Harrys roots in Epic, Myth, and Folklore” and also look at the section titles “Hermione Granger and the Heritage of Gender”.
Harry Potter and the sacred text
Zoltan, Vanessa, Kuile ter Casper, Hosts. “Harry Potter and the Sacred Text”, iTunes app.
This podcast also dives deep into the Harry Potter books but does it one chapter as a time and takes the approach of themes and the text as sacred. The hots are both professors and use their knowledge in their studies to incorporate it into their analysis of the chapters. I am going to incorporate this podcast since they go specifically into chapters with instances where the core group will go into situations, but they are viewed as a sacred text.
