Chapters 1 – 5:
Plot: The book starts off when the narrator, Christopher John Francis Boone finds his neighbor’s dog, Wellington dead on Mrs. Shears lawn after midnight. There was a garden fork sticking out of the dog. Christopher explains his story and how he has difficulty determining someone’s emotions from their expressions. Then Mrs. Shears comes out screaming and yelling at Christopher to move away from the dog and blamed him for Wellington’s death.
Characters:
Christopher John Francis Boone: The book begins with him narrating about the death of Wellington, Mrs. Shears dog. He explains that he has trouble determining someone’s emotions. He also says that he knows every country in the world and every prime number up until 7057.
Wellington: Wellington is Mrs. Shears dog that lives across from Christopher’s house. The story begins with him dead on his owners lawn after midnight.
Mrs. Shears: Mrs. Shears is Wellington’s owner and Christopher’s neighbor. In the story, she comes out on her patio and finds her dog dead in the lawn next to Christopher.
Siobhan: She is Christopher’s good friend which he met eight years before the death of Wellington. She used to draw faces with facial expressions on a piece of paper and asked him what kind of emotion is the face expressing.
Chapters 7 – 19
Plot: After the incident of the dog, Christopher thinks that he should write a murder mystery novel about this. Siobhan advised him to try writing a story that would grab people’s attention. As Christopher was standing next to the dog, two police officers arrive at the scene. They begin to ask Christopher many questions which made him annoyed. He pressed his head on the grass and started groaning. This happens when too much information comes into his head. The police officer picks him up off the grass, Christopher does not like people touching him, so he hit the officer. Christopher was arrested for the assault of an officer and taken to a nearby police station.
Characters: The characters in these five chapters are, Christopher, Mrs. Shears, the two police officers, Wellington and Siobhan.
Chapters 23 – 41
Plot: When Christopher arrived at the police station, he was asked to empty his pockets and put his belongings on the desk. Then he was put in a cell which was almost a perfect cube. Christopher began thinking of an escape plan the same way fugitives do it in books and shows. His father arrives at the police station and greets Christopher. He does not like being hugged, so instead, him and his father have a handshake. The two of them were taken to a room with three chairs and a table. Christopher was given a warning by the inspector and then he was let go. On the way home, Christopher kept on apologizing to his father. When they arrived, he saw his father tearing up in the living room and asked him if he was upset about Wellington’s death, he took a long time before replying that he was.

Chapters 43 – 61
Plot: Christopher began to remember the day his mother died two years ago. His father told him that she had a heart problem and had to be sent to the hospital and that he wouldn’t be able to visit her. The morning after Wellingtons death, Christopher spotted four red cars in a row which meant that it was a good day. If he spotted three red cars in a row, it would make it a quite good day, and five red cars in a row made it a super good day. Four yellow cars made it a black day which meant he will not talk to anybody for the entire day. Christopher also remembered the time when his mother died two weeks after going into the hospital. He never saw her ever since the time she had the heart problem. After that, Christopher wanted to investigate the death of Wellington. He began searching in the backyard and found that the garden fork that was used killed the dog, was in Mrs. Shears shed. He then concluded that the murderer knew Mrs. Shears and had access to the shed.
Characters: The characters in these five chapters are, Christopher, his father, his mother, Mrs. Shears, Wellington, Reverend Peters, Mrs. Forbes and Mr. Jeavons the psychologist at the school.
Chapters 67 – 83
Plot: Christopher began planning to investigate the death of Wellington by going around his neighborhood and asking his fellow neighbours about Mrs. Shears dogs death. None of his neighbors gave the answer he was looking for. He thinks that there are three reasons why someone would kill a dog, one reason is because they hate the dog, they are crazy or they just want to upset the owner. When Christopher makes it back home, his father notes that Mrs. Shears made a complaint on him for sneaking in her backyard. Then he tells his father that he believes Mr. Shears killed Wellington.

Chapters 89 – 107
Plot: Christopher shows Siobhan his finished book, which actually wasn’t because his father told him to stop the investigation of Wellington’s death. After school Christopher runs into Mrs. Alexander and they had a good talk. He asked her about Mr. Shears. She knows that Mr. Shears and his father don’t have good relations with each other. The reason why is because Mr. Shears had an affair with his mother.
Characters: The characters in these five chapters are, Christopher, his father, his mother, Mrs. Alexander, Mrs. Shears, Mr. Shears, Siobhan, and Rhodri.
Chapters 109 – 137:
Plot: Christopher added a little more to his book and showed it to Siobhan at school. He then tells her about the other day with Mrs. Alexander. Christopher doesn’t feel upset about the affair between his mother and Mr. Shears because his mother is dead. His father finds the book that he was writing and his father was not very happy about it. His father grabs him hard by the arm, and then Christopher hits him, rips his shirt and scratches his neck. His father dumps the book in the trashcan and locks the back door. The next day, his father apologizes and takes him to the zoo.

Chapters 139 – 163
Plot: Christopher shows pictures of live fairies from 1917 which was actually fake. The next day at school, Siobhan asked Christopher about the bruise on his face. He tells her that him and his father had a fight and so father hit him in the face. When Christopher arrived home after school, he decided to go and find his book. His father did not throw it away. Instead, he hid it in his closet. As he was looking for his book, he found a letter addressed to him from his mother stating that she is getting a new job as a secretary in a factory. When Christopher’s father went out, he would go to his room and tries to find other letters addressed to him. He counted 43 letters addressed to him. Christopher read multiple letters and they were all from his mother. She explains why she always fought with his father. She always saw that Christopher would act differently with his father than her, so she left them and moved to London with a guy named Roger. Father didn’t allow her to speak with Christopher or visit him. Then he noticed that the dates that these letters were written on were recent. His father lied to him about his mother’s death. She is still alive and healthy. Then his father walked in and began crying.

Chapters 167 – 191
Plot: Christopher’s father apologizes to him for lying about his mother’s death. His father then confesses that he was the one who killed Wellington. Christopher was in shock. The reason why he killed the dog was because him and Mrs. Shears got into an argument, and as he was leaving, Wellington attacked him, and so he stabbed him with the garden fork. Later on, Christopher did not feel safe, so he left the house and went to the garden shed and hid there. He looked at the stars and noticed the constellation orion. He didn’t feel safe living with his father, so he decided to go to London and live with his mother. He took his father’s bankcard to use it for the train to London. As Christopher makes it to the station, he decides that he needs to have a seat. Then a police officer approaches him and helps him buy a one-way ticket to London. The police officer leads him to his train and helped him on it, and finally, the train begins to move.

Chapters 193 – 223
Plot: As the train begins to move, the policeman says that his father is looking for him and that he has to go back to the station to meet with his father. As they travel, Christopher becomes dizzy from looking out of the window. He started asking for directions to his mother’s house and told him to go to Willesden Junction or Willesden green.
Characters: The characters in these five chapters are, Christopher, his father, his mother, Siobhan and Wellington.
