Research is a detailed study of a specific problem using different research methods and tools. It is a base or a foundation for creating or developing products, services, systems, etc. It focuses on understanding user expectations, needs, wants, behavior, and also investigative approaches. It helps to analyze the data and information systematically. Two kinds of research are Qualitative Research and Quantitative Research. Qualitative research helps in recognizing the characteristics of a service or a product by interviewing individuals and group discussions. Quantitative research helps in analyzing these characteristics in the form of statical analysis by creating surveys and questionnaires. There are different tools for conducting research, such as Competitor Study, SWOT Analysis, Case & Site Studies, etc. Each research tool enables us to achieve different goals.
The design should be based on the facts, and not assumptions, and doing thorough research enables you to get all the facts to be considered while designing a solution. Research also helps to focus on the competitors and the present activities and the latest design trends in the design industry. It is important to research to cater to the needs of the end-users. Research makes the design process more efficient which helps in designing a better solution. Research helps place people (target audience) at the center of the design process and the design solution.
Research in Design is important as it helps to get efficiency and reliability, guides the whole process in the right direction, and also ensures project time schedule. Research also helps in setting focus and clarity that can allow a designer to focus on the correct part of the problem precisely. It gives an on-point and right understanding of the people for whom the design is being created. It helps to build empathy. Research in Design Management is an excellent strategy to learn more about the clients, market, customer’s expectations, competition, and the industry. Research can give a far more understanding of long term design strategy, increasing the chances of creating a successful product/ solution that the users will love. Research in design management is important because it reduces the unknowns in the design process and allows the whole team to focus on creating the best possible solution which is easy and pleasurable to use for the audience.
