Essay: Morals in spider man

“With great power comes great responsibility.” One of New York’s most famous superhero’s ever said was Spider-Man. His saying was born with him in his civilian character as Peter Parker. Peter Parker had spitefully refused to stop a burglar from a robbery because it wasn’t his “job.” When the burglar comes back to kill Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben, his arrogance goes on to haunt him for the rest of his life and leads him to vow to live the life of a hero, regardless of the personal cost and inconvenience that has troubled him. Despite the fact how heinous the criminal he apprehends or how personally the villain harms him, Parker has always refused to cross the unspoken hero moral code and uses his power to intentionally kill another living being. Parker has held certain limits to his responsibility.
Spiderman’s origin has universal background and provides a divine focus for the examination of key moral concepts in ethics. Whether being lucky, or being at fate, plays two essential parts in the tale. Peter Parker being bitten by a mutated spider gave him the power, but more importantly, the murder of Peter Parker’s uncle by the thief he could have stopped also taught him responsibility. The creation of Spiderman’s heroic morality was created of both luck and of the good and bad choices that he should rightly be held responsible for. We can determine that it is impossible to separate the influence of luck from choices you make. If Peter Parker’s luck had been different he might have developed a character just like of the murderer in the story.
As you gain power in an organization or a role, you have increasing opportunity to make decisions and act in ways that are selfish, short-sighted. However, you can also choose to make decisions and behave in ways that are generous; thoughtful that support others’ growth and success. Great leaders know that they have a deep human obligation to use the gift of power for the greater good and not for evil. This is exactly how Spider-Man is described and there is meaning behind the well written story-line. After Peter Parker was bitten by the mutated spider, he was not himself and struggled with his new identity. It had taken him a while to figure out how to be himself which would best be described as geeky, smart, compassionate, shy and still manage to be a superhero.  Most of those who get thrown into leadership roles go through a similar struggle of not being able to control themselves and their actions. Good leaders realize that there are skills and capabilities they must learn and practice for over a series of time in order to be effective leaders but they also realize who they really are. There are some leaders who think who they are and give fake attitudes towards the people that are under them.
Spider-Man does good things but doesn’t always get the credit for it. Spider-Man seems to be confused, especially by the local newspaper goes through phases of thinking he’s a villain; people question his motives; mothers tell their kids not to conflict with him in any way. A great leader like Spider-Man knows that at the end of every day, they judge themselves based on how they’ve used the gifts they’ve been given. Spider-Man is out there fighting crime but people are judging him based on his actions and not understanding he is actually doing good for the world. He continues to strive everyday to save the world and until he finds the guy that killed his uncle.
The story of Spider-Man teaches us many different morals. One thing we may realize is your choices make who you are. Uncle Ben always reminded Peter by telling him “Whatever comes our way, whatever battle we have raging inside us, we always have a choice. It’s the choices that make us who we are, and we can always choose to do what’s right.” He tried to remind him of the virtues of having honesty, courage, and fairness in one self, but he didn’t care almost going in one ear and coming out the other. This definitely relates to us in our conditions. We should always have the courage to make the right choices as not knowing what may happen hopefully out of goodness or what awful things it could prevent from happening. The story of Spider-Man teaches us with great powers comes great responsibility. When Peter actually became Spider-Man, he could of used his powers for his personal gains by initiating in on criminal activities to improve his financial conditions, however he didn’t do it. He doesn’t have to necessarily help any one in need of danger but he feels that’s a part of him to save the world from criminal activity so he does it anyways. In a similar way we do the same by helping people in either a mental, physical, or financial way.
We may also realize don’t chase your love instead chase your ambitions. We can see that Peter loves MJ. However he has a difficult time dealing with his love life and his commitment to save the world against criminals. His duty to save the world always powers over his love life. MJ is an insecure girl who moves from one man to another to find love but she is also trying to maneuver around the lack of her self-esteem. Similarly in our lives we may also have a love life like Peter. She will come and go from your life and keep messing with your emotions. No matter how much you love her, you should never compromise on your goals, just to have her in your life. This story also brings out that you have to sacrifice for your principles. Having a moral code require a lot of guts, determination, and sacrifice. Sometimes in life we have to give up things we really want the most. Spider-Man decided to stick to his principles rather than love. There will be there will be moments in our lives when you may have to sacrifice your love, your comforts, or your high paying job for your dreams. The story of Spider-Man also brings out that there is one true hero in all of us. Spider-Man is a hero in his society. Therefore every society needs a hero because they inspire us, they motivate us to do things we don’t always know the outcome. They give us hope by showing that success can be achieved against all the odds.
Another helpful moral in life taught to us through the story of Spider-Man teaches us to face the truth even when it hurts and learn to forgive yourself before forgiving others. Telling the truth shows an act of bravery. Peter was carrying the guilt of not being able to prevent the death of Uncle Ben. Finally, Peter confessed to Aunt May that he was responsible for the death of his Uncle Ben, but it required a lot of courage from his side to admit the unfortunate truth. Gradually as time went on, Spiderman learned to forgive himself for failing to act that day. In life in our personal experiences, we all make mistakes here and there and that’s part of being human. However, some mistakes are able to deeply scare someone. It doesn’t matter if we did it intentionally or unintentionally, the past can’t be undone. If we feel truly guilty about the past then let the truth have its day. To make peace with yourself you will need to tell the truth, no matter how harsh it is because it will always be better than a horrible lie.
