Military and Law enforcement many times are both looked at as having the same type of law enforcement role, although there are huge difference within how the two organizations work. Law enforcement and the military are similar in many ways being that they both have the legal right to bear arms, meaning that they can carry weapons and use force. The way force is used within the organizations are completely different.
Police officers use force for the enforcement of the law,and the main goal is to capture the subject, in the military the main goal of a soldier is to kill their opponent. Police officers protect and serve the people within a community. Military officers sometime are used as an occupation force and serve as police officers to captured civilians without using their normal military training and tactics and is really the only time the two are the same. The same may be thought of the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the State Bureau although both hold jurisdiction over local law enforcement all serve different purposes.
The FBI conducts Investigations for the attorney general and safeguards national security.The director of the FBI is appointed by the President of the United States and has many different sectors, agents, specialist, and analyst.The State Bureau of Investigations helps local law enforcement and the district attorney with cases dealing with drugs, election laws, arson cases, sex abuse,child welfare cases and works directly under the U.S. government.
The difference is training, police officers are trained to keep the peace and apprehend suspects other than fighting. Police officers are less aggressive than soldiers and are trained to calm a situation to gain cooperation and shoot to injure not to kill. police officers also have a daily routine to protect and serve. The police enforce law and control population. In military training it is usually combat procedures and they are trained to kill. Police agencies deal with civilians, the domestic population, and the community. The military is trained for combat then apprehension. Military soldiers deal with foreign communities, combatants, and war. The last difference is that the Military protects and enforces the borders. The military is called into action rarely, usually only being at times of war, emergencies, or natural disasters.
The FBI trains for domestic intelligence and is security services for the United States, its jurisdiction comes from the Department of Justice, yet they report to the attorney general and the Director of National intelligence, because they are a part of the Intelligence community and under that jurisdiction covers over two hundred federal crime categories including U.S. embassies and consulates around the world.
The FBI also enforces compliance of the Civil Rights Act and investigates hate crimes, and violations of the act. The State Bureau of Investigations civil and criminal cases in state and multiple different jurisdictions. SBI agents can act with the Department of Public Safety, The Department of Justice, independently, state level agencies, and general law agencies like the state police. The big differences between all of the agencies are jurisdiction, although having similar rules to an average person the jobs of each of these individual agencies help to make a safer place.
