Essay: Bicameral

Bicameral refers to a place where laws are made or also known as parliament. In Parliament, there is their own members and their own ways to elect the members. Besides United States, United Kingdom and Japan, Malaysia too has adopted the bicameral system. In Malaysia, the bicameral system known as Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat. In Malaysia, Parliament was headed by Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Al-Mutassimu Billahi Muhibbudin Tuanku Al-Haj Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah since 13 December 2011. President of Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat also known as Speaker. Both this House will convene at the Parliament of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.
In the Dewan Negara, the speaker led by Abu Zahar Ujang. It acts as the legislature of the highest in Malaysia. The State Council is one of the two chambers of the Parliament. There are a total of 70 members of the Senate called the senator where only 26 of the 70 chosen by lot by the state with two senators per state in the Federation. 44 more senators appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on corresponding portfolio in accordance with their respective duties. There is 55 seats from Barisan Nasional, supported by 6 seats from KIMMA, MIUP and Independent. Besides, there is 2 seats from DAP, 2 seats PAS, 2 seats from Parti Keadilan Rakyat and 3 seats from vacant.
Meanwhile, in the Dewan Rakyat, elected representatives chosen by the democratic system, through general elections, held at least every five years. Election candidates representing political parties in Malaysia competed to fill the seats of Parliament and the State Legislative Assembly throughout Malaysia. Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia appointed on 28 April 2008 as President of the House of Representative. Current number of members of the 13th Parliament of Malaysia is 222 seats. Of the 222 seats, 132 seats are filled by the Barisan Nasional. While 37 seats of DAP, 28 seats of Parti Keadilan Rakyat, 21 seats of PAS and 4 seats from other party such as Parti Sosialis Malaysia, Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak and Indipendent.
