Rene Descartes was a very important person in history. Descartes was born on March 31,1596 in La Haye,Touraine France. Descartes was the youngest of three children and his mother died when he was about one.His father then sent his three children to live with their maternal grandmother. Descartes and his two siblings stayed there for the years to come, even after his father had remarried. His father, a council member in the provincial parliament, was very for getting a good education.(“Ren?? Descartes.” Bio. A&E Television Networks, 2015. Web. 20 May 2015. Paragraph “Early life”) His father had sent Descartes to a boarding school at a Jesuit college when he was only eight years old. He remained at this college for seven years. Descartes was a good student in college. It is thought that he was sick during his college life, since he was allowed to rest in his bed until mid morning unlike the rest of the students. While here he studied “Mathematical arts” which incluided Music,Astronomy,Metaphysics,Natural Philosophy and Ethics. This schooling allowed him to accomplish whatever he wanted to do with his life. (“Ren?? Descartes.” Bio. A&E Television Networks, 2015. Web. 20 May 2015. Paragraph “Early life”) Descartes earned his Bacealaureate in Law at the University of Poitiers. He also studied Theology and Medicine. After schooling Descartes joined the Army for a short period of time. While he was in the Army he had seen a lot of battles. Descartes got to meet a philosopher named Isaac Beeckman who had then became Descartes “influencial teacher” during his life time. ((“Ren?? Descartes.” Bio. A&E Television Networks, 2015. Web. 20 May 2015.) Descartes is famous for many reasons. He is a mathematician for in which he introduced something called Cartesian geometry that we use in Algebra today. Cartesian geometry is defined as “In classical mathematics, analytic geometry, also known as coordinate geometry, or Cartesian geometry, is the study of geometry using a coordinate system.” Descartes also had discoverd what we now call “Descartes Rules of Signs” which is defined as “is a technique for determining an upper bound on the number of positive or negative real roots of a polynomial. It is not a complete criterion, because it does not provide the exact number of positive or negative roots.” Through Descartes laws of refraction, he also developed a deeper understanding of rainbows and how “water droplet and how it interacts with light falling upon it.”.Descartes also had a therory on how the formation of the solar system went.( “Ren?? Descartes.” Bio. A&E Television Networks, 2015. Web. 20 May 2015. ) (.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analytic_geometry)(Eu.ucar.edu/Rainbows) Descartes work on “Descartes Rule of Signs” applies to Alegbra today for many reasons. We use his Rules of Signs to determine the positive or negative roots in a polynomial. The formula for “Descartes rules of signs” is used in almost every school today. Descartes work on rainbows has allowed scientist today to learn from his work and ellaborate on what Descartes believed was true about rainbows and how they work. Descartes therory of the solar system has allowed scientist to form a deeper understanding..(“Ren?? Descartes.” Bio. A&E Television Networks, 2015. Web. 20 May 2015.) (Eu.ucar.edu/Rainbows) Descartes had never married in his lifetime.Descartes did have a daughter named Francine. He had Francine in the Netherlands after he had moved away from France in 1628. Descartes moved away from France because he had a hard time focusing there, and believed moving somewhere new would allow him to concentrate more. He had Francine in 1635, which was seven years after he had moved to the Netherlands. Francines mother was Descartes house maid and Descartes wanted Francine to have a good education, just like his father wanted him too. Descartes had arranged for Francine to come to France to fufill his wish and even had living arrangments with relatives for her. Francine never got to go to France however. When she was five years old, in 1640, she suddenly died from a fever at the age of five. .(“Ren?? Descartes.” Bio. A&E Television Networks, 2015. Web. 20 May 2015. Paragraph Later Life, Death and Legacy)
Descartes remained in the Netherlands for twenty plus years after Francine had died. In 1649, he had moved to Sweden. Descartes moved to Sweden because Queen Christina had asked Descartes to be her Philosophy tutor.Queen Christina had made her lessons at promptly five am everyday. It is believed that this had led to Pneumonia in which he could not recover, and this was most likely the cause of his death on February 11,1650. (“Ren?? Descartes.” Bio.
