Essay: Cause and effect

Back when our ancestors came to these lands, there were millions, if not billions, of unexplored territory filled with open opportunities. But back then there were also, over tens of thousands if not more of thriving common and also unknown species of wildlife yet for them to discover. However, there is much regarding the Bureau of Land Management from what they do to how they seem to go beyond handling situations of their happening.
Back in 1812, the treasury department established a group called the General Land Office (GLO). This group’s job was to oversee the acquisition and placement of lost and gained lands into the public land domain. Soon after 1812, they started expanding, by the time it was their 25th anniversary in the year of 1837, they had the total of 65 district offices spread throughout the country. Around that same time in their Michigan branch, they started developing the first geological land survey and mapping project in the year of 1844. Several years later, in 1849, General
Land offices were transferred from the Department of Treasury into the newly established Department of Interior. In the years spanning between 1849 to 1946 there were many acts and achievements the organization accomplished for examples there was the Homestead Act (1862), Railroads(1850-current), Forest Management “Organic” Act (1897), Stock-Raising Homestead Act (1916) and there is many more that were unlisted. That year of 1946 the General Land Offices and the U.S. Grazing Services came to an end, forcing them to have to consolidate, that’s when they became what they are to this day known as The Burro Land Management (BLM). The Burro Land Management’s responsibility to this day is to manage hundreds of millions of acres of public lands and the wildlife of all types from endangered to thriving species, in several conditions from strikingly hot to frigid cold climates from dense timber filled woods all the way to flourishing green grasslands. As the beginning of the 1950s had come and gone, leaving the late 1950s. Resulting in more acts that had arisen from the Congress floor, such as Wild horse roundup act (1959) the act which states that it prohibits the roundups of horses using such equipment as aircraft and motor vehicles. in the year 1960, the Public Land Administration Act opened up the opportunity for BLM to receive donations and have cooperative agreements to “improve and better manage public land.” Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act (1971), Endangered Species Act (1973) etc… In the year of 1990, the Northern Spotted Owl was recorded as a threatened species due to the timber sales in its boundaries of federal lands. Four years later in 1994, there was a big year of communication between all the BLM District Offices, meaning all the Managers gather for the first BLM Summit, that summit resulted in the development of what they called the “new strategic version for the BLM.”. two years later in 1996, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is nominated by the presidential proclamation as BLMs first National monument bring the  1900s to an end and to embark the journey into the 2000s.
During the one hundred and five year reign of the Burrow of land management over the majority of our public lands. We have seen a gradual and steady decline in the numbers of threatened and Endangered animals within these wildlife areas. Multiple lawsuits and protests have appeared and taken place in the last few decades forcing the Office to openly admit to corruption and mismanagement of lands and funds. This can be seen in such lawsuits as the one concerning the Wyoming Powder River Basin and the Oil Gas project which would have impacted many endangered species within the area. Or the Federal land redesignation of the Bundy ranch which sparked widespread protests and an armed confrontation.
At the beginning of the Land management program looked like a good idea to protect the land and its animals. But as the government has changed so has the focus of the organization and its underlying policies. It as many things have been turned into a political organization. Not the noble protector of the land as it once was seen as and believed to have been. With that, it opens the door to whether this government is truly capable of managing any public institution including Highways, Education and yes health care.
