Introduction
A family was once thought of as a mother, father, and children, but now as time changes the ‘norm’ of a family concuss of only a mother and children making mother and children one of the most vulnerable group of a given populations, not just because of income but because within this group there are more than one individual to take into account.
Vulnerable population
Vulnerable mothers and children has become a growing population of people that has been steadily rising. As a society and as a nation, we all need to develop a plan that will assist in the growth of our young people because they are our future. I propose looking at what more we can do as a society to aid in a vulnerable mother and child’s living conditions, such as providing adequate healthcare, housing, and transportation to and from doctor’s appointments. By working to collaborate with vulnerable mothers and children, we can reduce the risk for both groups to lesson drug and alcohol use. Reaching out to the vulnerable that other whys would not reach out to you, getting vulnerable families in touch with resources. Everyone can do something to reduce negative effects on anyone’s vulnerable circumstances.
Health services needs for the population
Within South Carolina there are many services such as Medicaid which offers free healthcare and transportation to and from doctors’ appointments, free dental and eyeglasses at schools, and Food stamps and WIC to expecting mothers. Yet, one of the biggest problems here in South Carolina, is the lack of knowledge on what all that one can be received by a vulnerable mother and child, for example, reimbursement for taking ones child to and from doctors’ appointments. With the lack of transportation for vulnerable mothers and children this is a big problem that can and should be handled by everyone on a global level. Being more proactive as a community will insure that this group of vulnerable population will have the means to get to doctor’s appointments for the ones that are at high risk, taking into account the ones that are most at risk of suffering under nutrition because of low income and poor living conditions. It is always very helpful to have varies support and or counselor groups in all areas of a community for not just vulnerable mothers and children, but any vulnerable group.
Statistical data
Statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau here in South Carolina about 12 million single parent families, within 2014 are headed by single mothers, making this group of people vulnerable to poverty, poor healthcare, and drug/alcohol use because of lack of income(.U.S. Census Bureau.2014). Many families can be vulnerable within any stage of a growing family, but single mothers and children have been shown time in again that children raised by a single mother is more at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems as adults, carrying this vulnerability and risk factors on to future generations. Yet, we must keep in mind which not all characteristic from being raised by a single family household, doesn’t mean that all children health and growth will suffer.
Description of program
Proposes that every community needs to be more proactive, in looking after vulnerable mother and children, by giving mothers breaks from their small children for example, if you know a single mother that has more than one child in the home, stop by and give the mother a break are ask if she needs help caring for her children. Many times within an single family home the mother is the one that does the abuse, because the mother may feel overwhelm about ones situation of caring for her children for whatever reason and take ones anger out on the weak and vulnerable child.
Getting a single family home in touch with helpful resources is a big plus, but also be an active "listener". Many times a single mother just needs someone to listen to how and why she may have gotten to this point in one’s life. Many times one has the answers an action plan in place for oneself, in order to get out of this vulnerable situation. A single mother may just need someone to listen and provide accurate advice and information within a sensitive way.
Another proposes is that our local churches take more of an active role in caring for our vulnerable mothers and children. By having some of the able body elderly check on the young mothers and children in one’s community. By opening up a call center that will check on or do appointments for someone that may be raising children alone. Sometimes, a phone call is all a young mother needs, showing her that society still cares. Economically, the small things that I just proposed, within my paper, will have a profound effect on our society as a whole. By keeping our vulnerable mother and children in good health that will insure the best growth for all future generations to come. Being proactive as a community in giving breaks to single mothers in one’s community or a phone call has a lasting effect on our society and may cut down on abuse among single mothers and children. Global health organizations need to be dedicated to reaching those individuals who do not have access to healthcare. Barriers are physical, financial, and educational responsible for individual access to medical care.
Social and cultural norms
Society needs to overcome the social and cultural norm that teen girls have a greater chance of becoming vulnerable once they have become pregnant, making life as a teenage mom difficult for not only herself but also her child, with a large population of young mothers living in poverty, dropping out of school, and depending on the aid of the government to raise their family. Society must find ways to prevent teen pregnancy by giving them the skills and knowledge to make better chances, so that she will not repeat or add to the stress of more unwanted pregnancy.
"Organizational barriers to health care access for America's most vulnerable include health care deserts with a limited number of health care locations in poor, urban areas; understaffed health care offices in vulnerable areas that are unable to meet the needs of the number of patients in the area" (Burkholder.Nash.2013) .Health organizations must close the gap between patients and healthcare of the vulnerable mothers and children. Health programs must meet the patient at their homes. This can be mastered through grants with the help of community health workers and volunteers. Doctors must travel into rural communities to reach those who would otherwise never receive care. By "attending to the different conditions and needs of various groups is essential" (Drisdom.2013), health organizations must lesson healthcare costs by giving free or reduce medical care to those in need. Keep in mind that although people are poor they still like to keep their dignity.
Poverty and lack of education, along with other social determinants, are proven barriers to healthcare. Many vulnerable families lack the education on how to receive healthcare. Many mistakenly believe that their situation will not change and they are not knowledgeable of medical treatments and resources that are out there to aid in one’s situation. Additionally, general public health education is lacking, such as knowledge of proper health and care for expecting mothers. Health organizations need to fill the educational gaps, such as training health workers and community members to raise awareness about good health practices and opportunities to access medical care.
Community partnership
Clearly, with my propose and community partnership both can meet the needs and implement health education, counseling programs, and be able to evaluate the effectiveness of any concerns and resources one may have. All barriers can be overcome with time, patience’s, and the wiliness to care for mankind. These proposals are realistic methods because this is something we as a society can do as a whole and doesn’t cost one community anything, but ones time and compassion for mankind. It’s hard to pin point on a social, political, and economic level the cost of abuse and neglect among vulnerable mothers and children. All three impacts our society in one way, shape, or form. The social focus of our society today knows that with the new technology of today, our vulnerable mothers and children are in greater need than ever before. Yet, some of our single mother and children are falling short in getting the best care and nutrition because of lack of income. Years ago, it took a village to raise a child we as a society need to get back to the basic of this meaning.
Funding sources
Lots of non-profit organization such as "Women Ministries", Second Chance", and "Women Shelters" are geared just for women and children in need. All one has to do is to show proof of one’s situation and the help begins.
Food Stamps are a government benefits program that will provide funds to lower-income families and qualified resident aliens in order to purchase foods necessary to supplement their diet, but only if you meet the requirements The political aspect of this growing situation is that the government needs to do more to protect our vulnerable mother and children, seeing that the Medicaid and food stamps is not enough for some of our single mother and children to live off or even able to get the right kind of health care. Economically, it is best to take care of the problem now than to one day be face with the same problem oneself. Nash.2013), we all agree, that more needs to be done in order to protect a group of people that cannot care for themselves without the other.
We can’t live in this world by ourselves, so we might as well do what we can as a society to help each other. It’s "imperative for everyone to help address and end" (Greenlee.2012) vulnerable of mother and children. Regardless, of one’s age, gender, culture, or income we all need somebody to lean on. Life is to short and we live in a world with many diverse groups preventive, treatment, and long-term health care is a part of life that we all must face in some point in one’s life. Small proposes will prevent long term abuse and neglect against a population of people that cannot care for themselves which will insure our next generation of people will grow and thrive.
