Virtual work has become increasingly popular in organisations around the world over the last decade with the capability of technology becoming more advanced, companies have recognised the benefits with saving money and increasing work flow. Virtual work has many benefits with International Business Machines IBM reducing costs for premises and other financial costs, providing a customer service with longer call centre hours with staff having more varied hours. (Lockey, 2006) Implications have arisen by holding a virtual worldwide network of virtual employees, a tight security system helping to prevent hackers accessing customer and staff account information has to be put in place costing the company millions every year and with research into new technology to always remain one step ahead of hackers so their cryptic network is safer again adds to the financial costs. (Hamel, 2012)

Virtual working and workers have many benefits for organisations, with many employees looking for new work with criteria that they can work from home, helping to reduce costs for themselves and reduce commuting time motivates staff to become more proficient in their work as they are more likely to be motivated. (Geister, 2015) (Reference Motivation Possibly). With employees commuting less and less it helps with many of the sustainable goals (Appendix A) an example of reasonable consumption and production from virtual working was is in 2014 the firm Bete a nozzle manufacture changing to a virtual office. Bete a company trading for over 60 years took the lead to improve technology has allowed them £50,000 a year with saving £4000 per employee a year with the 13.5sqm of floor space estimated to be used. While still remaining to keep the same high reputation with allowing the employees to work remotely. Beta is a proud promoter of their reduced footprint with a saving of 8.4 tons of CO2 a year. (Mir, 2014) A company welcoming to reduce their impact helps with another of the sustainable goals to help combat climate change.

Travelling to and from the office wastes time, damages the environment, takes its toll on the employees and costs too much money. Having a virtual workforce increases the pool of talent for jobs and is an incentive for employees with a better work life balance and increased job satisfaction. (Cisco, 2013) It could be biased and figures manipulated with the fact Cisco industry is for the technology of company’s and virtual work, but even with what is stated by the company the fact that many aspects would be within the aims of the UN sustainable goal leading the way for a better future.

A barrier that can be seen by companies is the efficiency of staff working at home, with many distractions such as children, school run and having the environment of home. What systems would need to be developed to ensure staff are working when they say they are working. (DeMers,2014). Ctrip a Chinese travel website gave the opportunity for half their workforce to trail a 9-month programme to work from home. Even though there was many sceptics from middle management offering resistance with the struggle in change of management the results showed an increase of 13.3% in calls and a happier workforce but not all staff felt they could work from home and felt threatened which left the workers in the offices production rates to decline. (Bloom, 2014).

Yahoo’s Jackie Reses the chief of human resource for the company in 2013 took a complete U-turn for employees working from home after, teamwork becoming very poor, a lot of staff didn’t know who to take their problems to and minor issues were left until it began to impact the company. Reese’s statement to the employees ‘Being at yahoo isn’t just about the day to day job, it is about the interactions and experiences that are only possible in our offices’ (Carlson, 2013) Yahoos chef executive felt the company had lost its edge and direction since the virtual work move. This later made conflict and was argued the move was to entice employees to leave the company to reduce costs but a move like this would impact heavily for the UN goals reducing jobs, unhappy staff and a company known for conflict. The fact office space would need to be increased and increasingly using energy.
