In any industry it is pivotal that the team is developed on form and is a gelled workforce, in order to accomplish immense success. Prior to accomplishing a successful workforce it  is key that a successful and powerful  leader is obtained, as having an individual who strives for success as a leader will bring the best out of any workforce, whether this may be a leader such Sir Alex Ferguson or leaders such as Martin Luther King. Great leaders are fundamentally the stepping stones for an immense organisation.

Aspects which make a good Team:

1. Delegation:

Delegation is important aspect to make a good team as it makes sure that the work will be completed within the project. Delegation will allow the team leader to divide the work that is needed to be done in between the team members. This will allow the project to be completed to a high standard as it will reduce stress and work load from the team leader. This will allow the team leader to focus on other significant areas within the project for example the planning, the business analysis and so on.

2. Respect:

If you understand the nature of a team then respect is an obligation that should be provided to everyone within the team avoiding arguments and discriminations. Thus as a team member I should respect other team members and the same applies to them.  this makes a good team as it means that the team members understand one another and they will also be able to provide assistance placing no conditions so that the job is done effectively.

Respect is an aspect that can be difficult to gain but easy to destroy thus it vital to make sure you know the importance of one another. Respecting one another enhances the team as it allows you to;

 Build trust with your team members

 Develop on your working relationships

 Increases the way you work

 Reduces the amount of stress you suffer

This also has a positive impact on the way you work as a team due to the fact that the teamwork will improve, it will increase the workflow and also have a major impact on the output of the project.

3. Success:

Success plays a major role in assuring that one has a good team as well as making a good team. Success in a team can bounce off each team member making sure that the work within the project is carried out to a high standard. Success in a team helps to set goals and boundaries and these goals and boundaries are something to look forward to as a team. Success can also carry from site to site as long as the team is kept the same as well as satisfied.

In addition if the team does not work together as one then it will not gain success, as long as all the team members work together efficiently and complete the task that is applied to them to high standard the team will then succeed. It is important that the team members have mutual trust which has to be nurtured between them to be able to produce a constructive project culture. It is also vital that the members work together causing no delays or affecting others work thus communication, cooperation and even compromise are needed to allow this from not happening.

4. Co Operate:

Co Operate helps to assemble a good team s it allows each member of the team to follow one change of command. Having a team following one chain of commands assures that each team member knows what is required from them. A chain of command is crucial in assuring that the team members are alerted about the individual input that is needed within the team. A successful tem can strive of a chain of command as they knew what has to be carried out on each and every site of a build.

Co-operation also means that the team works together so that they are able to complete their project to the best ability possible as a team. Thus this will help to make a good team as it means that they will help each other to complete the task and meet their goal.  Being co-operate will also mean that the team will communicate more thus allowing the team members to be aware of what they have to do and what is expected from them.

5. Efficiency:

Efficiency in a team is the back bone of the team due to the fact that if a team carries out efficient work day in and day out then it is highly unlikely that anything can go wrong within the work and the team.  Efficiency also allows the work to be carried out by the team members at a high standard.

Efficiency within a team means being able to complete all the task with the amount of time set within the project that they are dealing with thus this is an important aspect to make a good team as the team together will need to make sure that they complete all the task to a high standard to be able to meet their team goal. Efficiency also links to completing the project effectively with less expenditure or effort being used. The team will need efficiency to make sure that the team goal are reached and succeeded which will allow making a good team.

6. Quality:

The quality of the team will have an impact on the final result of the build which is carried out by the team. The quality in regards to the team is related to the standard, cost, and the end product. Having the right team assembled shows the standard quality of the finish build by assigning members of the team to different areas of the project, it will allow each member to focus on that area only and complete it with a high standard.

It is important for the team to manage quality for them to be successful. Thus the team will need to make sure that the product they buy for the project is a good quality which will allow the team to maintain the client’s satisfaction including loyalty. By doing this it will also help to reduce the chances of spending more money to replace product that may be damaged or faulty. If the client is satisfied then it will help you build up on your reputation as a business/team and it will also mean that they will return to you in the upcoming future for another project.

7. Responsibility:

If each member within the team takes responsibility with the task that they have been assigned with then it will allow them to carry it out efficiently and to a high standard. It will also mean that they have taken responsibility of what they do thus if anything goes wrong then it will be reliable on the member only, not on the team as a whole.

If no one takes accountability then it will mean that the task within the project will not be completed, it will also mean that the deadline set will not be met causing delays.  This will also mean that the team goal will not be reached. If all the members within group take accountability then it will mean that only one member doesn’t have a responsibility to do all the work. Responsibility doesn’t mean only being accountable for the physical work within the project but also the behaviour, attitude towards other members, the attendance you have to the group meetings etc.

When doing a project as a team, every member within the team has a duty towards the group and the project that they are doing. If each member doesn’t put 100% effort, deliver result or contribution then it will have a negative impact on the group as a whole as they will fail to meet their aim/goal they had set. The team will only succeed successfully when each member within the team provides the same balance of participation.

Software’s

Despite the fact that a manager has constructed a team he /she will now have to make sure that they have methods in place in order to help assure that they can manage and stay on track of their team’s progress. This procedure is commonly carried out with the use of computerised software’s. With regards to the construction industry there are numerous software’s which can be used by manager to keep an eye on their teams progress. Examples of such software’s are;

• Procore

• Aconex

• Build Tools

• BIM

• Microsoft Project

Every industry has software’s in place in order to help make sure that there industry and firms progress and establishment is kept to a high standard and well maintained. The use for these software’s are simply to maintain a company’s economically and also to help eliminate problems and issues as soon as they arise.

Scientific Management

There are two different types of managements which the world of businesses uses to make their businesses a success and to gain maximum profits. Scientific management is one of these management that businesses use. Scientific management mainly concentrates on work flow, profit and production in the business. This method focuses and wants to get the most out of workers this is to gain more profit. In this type of method comes in elimination of waste and good profitable working practise. This method of management was found by Frederick W Taylor. It was found in the 19th century and is also known by Taylorism.

Humanistic Management

The type of management is Humanistic management it is not the same as scientific management. It is in place to look after the workers in the company, as every human need working hours, welfare and mainly to be paid. All these factors fall in humanistic management. Robert Owen was born in 1772; he was an early pioneer in this category. Robert Owen set out to make sure minimum working age was set for workers, and also shorten the working day.

80/20 Rule

In order to assure that business run smoothly and sufficiently the 80/20 rule must be applied. The 80/20 ruling is also majorly efficient in both business and personal terms. With regards to the construction industry regardless of the scale of a project, it is always advised and necessary to have a project manager appointed to the project. It has been known that 80% of construction companies’ profits are from 20% of their clients. This means that top 20% of clients produce 80% of the profit.  This is simply in order to assure that a project is kept on track, and in order to assure that any faults, errors which may occur are tackled and dealt with ASAP. This also means that 20% of construction companies will be contending for 80% of business work this will make it hard for smaller companies to try and grow.

This indicates that large companies will have more chances of winning projects has they will have large work forces and more clients so this company will be more successful than smaller businesses. This is because smaller businesses cannot take on large projects has they do not have much funds to succeed in the project.  So this shows that size of the business means a lot in the construction industry because smaller companies can only take on smaller projects which they can handle if they do take on larger projects this will indicate in loss for them if they fail to handle the project.

Project management is not new in any industry it that is the construction or weather the environment sector it is being used world widely by everyone it is being used by people from centuries. It was first developed in the early 50s. Project management is not only used in large organizations it is used in small projects too. The main reason that management is used for is to avoid problems, also it is needed for managing the workers and achieving the goal more quickly and more proficiently. Management is necessary for a project to run smoothly without any complications. This is because large amount of money is invested in a project so it is crucial that the management is done correctly and that the job of the management is given in the correct hands otherwise peoples investments can be lost. Nowadays technology has made it easier for projects to be handled and crucial communications to be made easily and quickly, so that time is not wasted, and goals are achieved. This is a big advantage for the project management. Management does not stay the same it is changing with time and technology. Management is not only used in the construction industry it is also used in the environment sector for businesses and companies. In the construction industry project management is used all the way through from building to the completion of the building and also after the building is completed for the maintenance of the building.

Kaizen and Time Quality Management Methods

In current times methods such as Kaizen and TQM Total Quality Management are world widely used in businesses and in the construction industry with the management methods.

Kaizen means a “good change.” It was first used in many Japanese businesses and then spread worldwide. Now is being used in environments outside of business and productivity. Kaizen refers to improvement which can be once or continuously large or small. This is in some ways same as TQM, but kaizen makes changes large and can be extreme. This can lead to severe expenses and difficulties in the construction industry as such changes are not made.

TQM is a method which continues to improve itself. It is a method which has four procedures plan, PDCA, check and d. it starts by plan and then usually works backwards improving it with change until they are pleased with the work. This method on the other hand can be used in the construction industry as while building things will need to be changed to improve the building such as materials and machinery. This can be because they are better to use and easy to apply. Also this can be because you can save time on the project, and simply to avoid problems and get better production.

Many companies are using both of these methods together in evolution of management. This is because employers have understood that they can gain extreme profit, by keeping staff happy and on task, also by looking after them and by keeping them safe and treating them fairly. This will help the workers to work to the best of their ability when they now they are valued and needed and will make them produce quality work and will help the business gain profit.

Maslow Hierarchy

Maslow Hierarchy of needs is a theory proposed by Abraham Maslow in 1943. Maslow understood what people needed to be motivated to achieve the best of their ability. So if the employer knew what motivated their staff they could bring out the best in them to produce quality goods and gain more profit. This theory is now being used world widely by employers to get the employees motivated. This picture below defines the system for Maslow Hierarchy.

Human Resources

Organisations achievements rely significantly on the abilities of its staff. Organisations possibly will have the money and technology however; these resources are not of much use should the organisation fail to have sufficient human resources. Human resources Is key in order to assure that an organisation is capable of facing challenges placed upon them by rival businesses. Both capital and technology can be produced, but unfortunately HR is a must throughout an organisation in order to assure that an organisation can manage sufficiently HR helps to thrust and drive organisations through future challenges.

The construction industry is one of the most difficult and complicated areas in which to manage workers. The human resources are there to make sure that the construction industry has all the employees under control and work is being done suitably and that no distributions are caused. The construction industry is not based in one place and is widely spread; therefore to manage the work can be bit of a handful. The relationship between the workers needs to be precise and workers need to also get along for work to make progress. If anything goes wrong with the human resources or work is not being done accurately this can then have a huge impact on the construction industry, has they are what keeps the industry making progress. Human resources are also the main valued source of capital.

Public Sector

The public Sector is the portion of the overall economy anxious in assisting to offer basic government services. From country to country the structure of the public sector differs significantly. However in numerous countries the public sector is made up of services such as:

 Military

 Healthcare

 Police

 Fire and Rescue

 Public Transport

 Public Roads

 Education

In some situations the public sector may well provide services, which a non-payer may not be excluded from, for example street lighting.

Private Sector

The private sector is mainly owned privately by a person and not by the government, so the government do not have a say in the business or own it. The private sector usually consists of partnerships and charities. An example of businesses run in the private sector is local business and retail stores. The Private Sector is fundamentally company which are developed on a profit basis only. Traditionally it is the private sector that are known for recruiting a vast amount of staff, however this does differ, should a countries government have significant power over the entire countries economics. A prime example of a country where this is the case is China.

The UK as a hole consists of several large private companies, the top 5 private companies in the UK are:

1. Boots

2. INEOS

3. Green energy

4. John Lewis

5. Stemcor

Differences between public and private sector

The public and private sector are different in the ownership and the main aim of the both sectors. The differences between the two sectors are not huge however there are some such as the financial management in the public sector and public sector are not the same. Someone that works in one of these areas in financial management will not be ready to carry out the same duties in the other sector because of the differences. Accounting methods used in public and private sector are different considerably. This is because in the private sector financial managers and accounts are assured by the GAAP, generally accepted accounting principles method of accounting. Also double entry accounting is used to ensure financial accurateness. In the public sector, these methods can also be used. In the public sector this can be found in areas like budgeting, this is because financial managers are not essential assured by accumulation accounting methods.

In the private sector it is usually not necessary to gain a profit whereas on the other hand in the public sector it is essential this is because this is there only way to an income. This is cause they are more interested in the profit and want to achieve bottom line, and gain as much profit possible to succeed. The public sector does not see profit as their main aim and set a different goal.

The ways in which decisions are made differ between both sectors. In the private sector decisions are made at the top between owners and partners and then discussed with workers. As the manager will usually tell the workers what work is to be done and they will obey. However on the public sector decisions are not so simply made. This is because of rival between groups and crucial financial decisions are often solved by union workers and support. Decisions can’t be handed down to the next person in charge without the workers consent.

I believe that Human Resources has made management better, this is because it is the HRM that are in charge of managing the people in a company or firm. I believe this because it is the human resources who are responsible for training workers. (HRM) are also responsible for managing the relationship of employer and employee, having a well-established relationship in ten work space helps to improve growth. Having a well organised workforce is the key to success and the growth of the business. It is also the responsibility of HRM to see that work has been achieved to a satisfactory level, and also to assess whether or not workers have the right skills for the job.

The public sector is a huge sector where a lot of people are involved in the business. So projects like the town hall and airport are not difficult to construct as there is not limited amount of money like in the private sector. Contractor will usually rival for the tenders of the project and it is mainly Public Limited Companies which will win the tender.

The government department’s funds grant programme using moneys raised through taxation.  They also build airport, town halls and all what the government build or fund from the taxes that individuals pay.
