e rst humans who lived in New Zealand where called “ e Maori”. ey are ,as we believe it, the indigenous people of New Zealand. e Maori immigrated between the year 1200 and 1300 from Polynesia too New Zealand on canoes, this event was called the “Great Fleet”. e Polynesian where renamed maori when the moved too New Zealand. ey hunted birds and sh. In the north of the island was there favorite because of a warmer climate.
In the year 1642 the dutch explorer, Abel Janszoon Tasman , discoverd New Zealand. He was the rst european to discover the island. Abel Tasman was greated by the Maori who where all on canoes. e maori blew on a horn what meant that there where ready to battle but Abel Tasman obviously didn’t knew what it meant so he made his man blew on the trumpets. When he did this for the maori it was a singt that the dutch took the challenge. e maori men le but the next day they killed four of Abel’s men. A er it happend Abel called the bay “murdersbay” and le quickly.
James Crook, also an explorer, went too the island 127 years later. In the year 1769 Crook took foot on the island, he made the island proberty of king George 3th. is meating went much better because crook had a in- terpreter on board. He made a map of the island with a few mistakes.1

A er crook there was another explorer, the frence man Jean- François Marie de Surville. But he also le because of the same cruel meeting with the maori Abel tasman had le . A er Jean-François Marie de Surville a another french explorer, Marion du Fresne was his name, also try to explor the island. First it went well but a er a few weeks 13 of his men where killed and eaten. Some people say it’s because they had broken a code of conduct.
A er this horrible event many expeditions went to New Zealand. Years passed by and when the 1800 arrived alot of sale men, adventurers, wale- and robben hunteres try to nd luck in New Zealand. But a er 30 years the hunters came the population of the rob was so low that most men le or went looking for another job. Beginning 19th century the rst tra- ding agency was build. In Europe there was alot of inquiry to ax, that was made by the Maori, wood, seal skins and whale oil. e maori wanted nails, blankets, axes and muskets. e europeans had change alot in the lives of the Maori. Because of the europeans there were deadly viruses and they sold gun power to the indigenous people of New Zealand. Between the year 1820 and 1830 there was a big ght between two tripes and 60.000 people were killed by gun power.
In 1833 James Busy was send to order the tribes but that didn’t really work out. William Hobson was send 5 years later and
he manage to make the maori singed a agreement of Waitangi. In this agreement was spoken about the sovereignty of New Zealand. 1

e agreement was also transelated to maori but there was
a di erence between the engelish and maori version. In the Maori one was nothing said about sovereignty of the island and the people in it. A er they singed the agreement nobody really lived by those rules. 1843 was the year of the rst battle between them. e war started in 1860 until 1869 when the war ended because the maori wasn’t really working against the British anymore. In the beginning of the 19th century the ecenomics was very bad and people were su ering. luckly at the and of 1800 it went back to normal again and even train rails were build. With the maori tribes it didn’t go as well, most maori’s got a deadly disease because of the immigrants from Europe.
In the rst half of the 20th century New Zealand made a na- tional identity. When they had almost hit the 1 million limit in 1907 people were going to see the island less as a british colony and more by it’s real name “New Zealand”. e country let there soldiers ght in mutiple wars ans lost alot of lives.
In the 30s the economics went downhill. e rst asigned Labour-regering xed the economics problems. ey helped to build up the country again. When WWII started they got involved and they again lost alot of lives.
A er the WWII the economics of New Zealand were doing very well. In the 60s there were alot of protest. In de 70s New Zealand went again downhill because of the uprising oil pri- ces . Since 1975 the maori got parts of the country back and there rights. David lange tried to get the economics back on it’s feed but the way he did it alot of people lost there job or there company in 1984. 1

e nation gouvement tried to do this also in 1990 but alot slower. Because of the modern so ciety New Zealand has grown alot. Nowaday there are alot of immigrants and becau- se of those di erent nationalities New Zealand get’s a indipen- ted identity.
