Researchers at ESALQ (Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz), USP, developed a new variety of tomato without using GMOs.
The particularity of the fruit is that it is purple, having predominance of antioxidant anthocyanin pigment, which may help prevent cancer.
In 2008, scientists at the John Innes Centre in Norwich (UK), have developed a "purple tomato" with similar characteristics, however, used both transgenic, which does not happen in the professor's research Lazarus Eustace Pereira Peres.
