This hypothesis   H1 is rejected and we can conclude that there is impact of IT on the library administration

(2) Hypothesis 2: Application of IT in library will increase the use of the library by users

The hypothesis H2 is accepted and we can conclude Application of IT in library will increase the use of the library by users.

(3) Hypothesis 3: The IT has reduced the use of the conventional library

Z-test is used to test this hypothesis the hypothesis H3 is accepted and we can conclude The IT has reduced the use of the conventional library

(4) Hypothesis 4: Application of   IT in library benefits to the users

Z-test is used to test this hypothesis, thus the hypothesis H4 is accepted and we can conclude that Application of   IT in library benefits to the users.

(5) Hypothesis 5: The users are having positive perception towards the use of IT in library.

Z-test is used to test this hypothesis, thus the hypothesis H5 is partially accepted, and the users have positive as well as negative perception towards the use of IT in library

Positive perception:

  • Availability of the E- sources will increase use of the library by them.
  • Digital library will help users to get relevant information and easily gets its soft copy.
  • E- resources will influenced user’s academic efficiency
  • Even though some negative perception of the users about the digital library almost all respondents are agree that they will prefer to digital library over conventional library if available. Because of its vast availability of the data in time. It is quick to access the data in digital library compare to the conventional library.

Negative perception:

  • Users can not better concentrate if reading e- resources
  • E- Resource reduces the reading time of the users.
  • Use of the digital library is more complicated than conventional library.
  • E-resources do not give reading satisfaction to the users compare to the conventional library.
  • E- Resources create fatigue very fast compare to use of conventional library resources.

6) Hypothesis 6: There is No Impact of the occupation of the users on their perception towards the application of IT in Library.

F- test has been used to test this hypothesis, this hypothesis is rejected and we can conclude that there is impact of the occupation of the users on their perception  towards the application of IT in Library

Other Major Findings:

Present status of management college Libraries affiliated to Dr .Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad

Analysis indicates that the libraries in the management institutes have:

1. sufficient stock of books

2. Sufficient number of magazines and journals.

3. enough number of newspapers

4. Almost all libraries frequently update the stock of the book and journals/ Magazines?

5. Almost all sample management institutes we have taken for this study do not have following modules of library software

  • Acquisition module
  • Serial Control Module
  • Web OPAC
  • Technical Processing Module
  • Statistical Module

6. Three management institutes have following module for the library which yet not effectively used for users’ point f view.

  • Circulation/ Processing Module
  • Digital Module

7. Most of the institutes Does not have multi language support

8. All librarians responded that they are not enough trained by college to handle application of IT in Library.

9. All librarians responded that institutes do not have special provision of funds for ICT in library.

10. All librarian responded that the application of IT in library will make the library administrative more efficient and effective.

Application of the IT in Library Science:

1. Almost all management institutes have internet facility in their libraries.

2. Around 72 % of the respondents responded that   library in their institute has bibliographic (digital) database.

3. Institute libraries are also lagging behind in the availability of the different E- resources like e-journals, e-books, e-reports, e- database, CD –ROMs etc

4. Around 72 % of the responded that their institute library has e-journals, e- books, e- Database.

5. Around 77 % of the responded that their institute library has e-reports and CD –ROMs

6. All respondents responded that their institute library does not have e- theses.

Effective Use of Information Technology in Library Management:

The analysis indicates that management college Libraries affiliated to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad not effective in Use of Information technology in library management

1) Out of 600 respondents 135 respondents responded that their institute library has catalogue for the E – Resources.

Thus 72.5% respondents responded that   their institute library does not have catalogue for the E- resources.

2) Out of 600 respondents 135 respondents responded that their institute library has own website.

Thus 72.5% respondents responded that their institute library does not have own website.

3) No institute has web based services like Ask librarian service, virtual reference service, knowledge base management etc.

4) No institute has automated library and server to run library automation.

5) Only 27 % respondents responded that their institute has separate browsing section for the academic staff.

6) Only 27 % of the respondents responded that their library continuously upgrading or planning to upgrade with reference to use of the E-resources

7) Only 32.5 % of the responded that library changed coding of the books from the traditional to bar code system

8) 85% of the responded that their library still following the traditional manual systems and do not making the effective use of the Informational Technology.

Impact on Information Technology on Library Administration:

The use of the Information technology in library will make its administration more effective. Almost all users of the library of the management institutes in Aurangabad region agreed that:

1) The use of IT   in library will reduce the use of the conventional library and increase the use of digital library

2) The use of IT in library will help to save users time to find the relevant materials and will save time required for other formalities.

3) Digital library will make be more informative and more flexible for users.

4) Use of the IT in library will improve the communication between user and librarian

5) IT in library will help to facilitate quick access to current data, which will attract more users towards library.

6) Digital Library is easy to upgrade compare to conventional library.

7) Use   IT in library will make its overall administration more effective

Impact of IT on the use of library and users (students, faculties, etc) perception towards it:

Above data analysis gives the overview of the impact of IT on the use of library and users (students, faculties, etc) and their perception towards it.

1) The positive impact of the IT on the users that (As Almost all respondents are agree on these positive impacts)

  • Availability of the E- sources will increase use of the library by them.
  • Digital library will help users to get relevant information and easily gets its soft copy.
  • e- resources will influenced user’s academic efficiency
  • Even though some negative perception of the users about the digital library almost all respondents are agree that they will prefer to digital library over conventional library if available. 2) The negative impact of the IT on the users that

  • Almost 80 % of the respondents agree that users can better concentrate in reading hard books/magazines/ documents compare to E- resources, thus e- resources reducing the reading time of the users. Thus reduction of the reading time by the user is one of the negative impact of the digital library
  • Almost 80% of the respondents are agreeing that use of the digital library is more complicated than conventional library.
  • Around 85 % of the respondents agree that E-resources do not give reading satisfaction to the users compare to the conventional library.
  • Around 85 % of the respondents agree use of e- resources create fatigue very fast compare to use of conventional library resources.

Feedback from the Librarian of the Management Colleges:

Application of Information Technology (IT) In Library Science in management institutes is not satisfactory.

1) Almost all sample management in states we have taken for this study do not have following modules of  library software

Suggestions:

In the light of findings extracts from the survey of Management college libraries, following important suggestions are listed for the improvement of library services:

1. Government should make a necessary financial provision to strengthen the libraries as a knowledge centre.

2. AICTE should draft the extensive financial policy for college libraries.

3. Majority of college libraries should accept the membership of any of the library networks. They should provide access to various subjects. In this way the use of electronic information resources should be encouraged.

4. In order to increase optimum usage of E- resources such as E- journals, E-books, online databases and OPAC the libraries should create awareness among the users by conducting periodical user orientation programs.

5. College Librarians should implement RFID technology which was effective and convenient in library automation.

6. College authorities should design a plan to increase the number of users and utilizations of library resources.

7. Academic administrative organizations should create awareness of CD-ROMS database in libraries and plan for human resource development.

8. AICTE should motivate college libraries for 24 hours’ internet facilities using either broadband or Wi-Fi-technology.

9. Librarians and library staff should be trained as an information seller.

10. Proper steps should be taken for the digitization for rare collections.

11. Short duration training programme should be designed for Librarians in order to make them acquainted with the latest trends in library and information science.

12. In order to solve the slow access problem of Internet services, the colleges should acquire high speed Internet connection with maximum band width and the capacity of the server should be increased. Further the printer facility should be provided in Internet browsing section of the libraries.

Scope for Further Research:

This study is confined to the Impact of Information technology in Management college libraries, but there are several facets in Information technology to be considered for further research. There is a need to understand the macro picture of Information technology in various angles.

“Librarians’ knowledge of Information technology and attitude towards Information technology” can be considered for another area of study.

A comparative study on “Application of Information technology in Government Degree Colleges and Private Degree Colleges in the present digital era” can be taken as a topic for another research in due course.

The present study “Impact of Information Technology on Users” is confined to Management College libraries of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad only, but same may be applying to other areas or regions of the state. Similar studies can be conducted in other state of India also.

Conclusion:

Now a day Libraries are using information technology to automate a wide range of administrative and technical processes, build databases, networks, and provide better services to their users.

IT in libraries helps in performing operations and services efficiently. The application of IT and accessibility of IT facilitate the free flow of information, creative expression, and effective management. This research has investigated the status of technology in Library in management colleges affiliated to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad.

The overall analysis shows that the Institute libraries are lagging behind in the availability of the different E- resources like e-journals, e-books, e-reports, e- database, CD –ROMs etc

The analysis indicates   that Management College Libraries affiliated to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad are not effective in use of information technology in library management.

The analysis shows that the use of the Information technology in library will make its administration more effective. Almost all users of the library of the management institutes in Aurangabad region agreed on it.

Even though some negative perception of the users about the digital library almost all respondents are agree that they will prefer to digital library over conventional library if available. Because of its vast availability of the data in time and quick to access the data in digital library compare to the conventional library.

ICT is changing the work of libraries and information centers. Library needs this technology. An increased number of users, a greater demand for library materials, an increase in the amount of material being published, new electronic formats and sources, Insufficient of ICT base trained staff, Insufficient of E-journals, and e-database are some of the reasons for the growing need for ICT in university library. Librarians, library patrons and supporters, and, above all must help develop ICT-based library to meet the changing demands of the users.
