PRECEDENT RESEARCH SUMMARY

(350 words: 10 PTS)

CHOSEN CATEGORY: Zoo and Zoos Exhibits

PROJECT EXAMPLE: Audubon Park Zoological Garden – New Orleans, LA

Audubon Zoo located in New Orleans, Louisiana traces its history back to 1916. Over several years the zoo expanded, adding an elephant and two lions. During the Great Depression, private and federal funds helped continue the growth. Additions to the zoo contained monkey house, elephant barn and numerous cages opening in 1938. Although many great additions had been added to the zoo, many critics called the zoo an “animal ghetto,” and called for its closure. 1970 marked a turning point for the zoo. Ron Forman began working for Major Moon Landrieu as an administrative analyst in 1972 and was running the Audubon Nature Institute. Setting out to expand and create new facilities, the zoo was introduced to an Aquarium and Insectarium (nola.com).

The landscape for the Audubon Zoo was completed in 2001. The site is 1 acre with 15,400 square feet in buildings. The budget for the architecture was $6 million. The last major construction completed is the entry way to the Audubon Zoo. The gateway is lined with palm trees, includes a large gift shop and a concession. With the entry way being the first glance to visitors, it was very important to leave a great first impression (mathesbrierre.com)

With so many attractions, the Audubon Park is an audience to not only children but families, volunteers, educators and large groups. The attractions at the park have grown drastically in the past 10 years. Not only does the Audubon Nature Institute inquire a zoo but, aquarium, insectarium, park, golf course, clubhouse café and nature center (AudubonInstitute.org).

With all the attractions you may be wondering what is there to do at the each one. You can “create your own event.” Many have help private parties, birthday parties and even weddings at the zoo. Each attraction also keeps an updated events calendar. One of the main events of the year is the, “Zoo-To-Do for Kids.” The zoo is transformed into a “magical playground” for children of all ages, with face painting, entertainments, vendors from all over New Orleans and all proceeds will help underwrite Gator Run, Audubon Zoo’s new lazy river with surprises around every turn (AudubonInstitute.org).

Overall, the Audubon Park Zoological Garden is a growing, thriving, educational institute suitable for all ages. Living in Louisiana I think it’s a must visit and important to support such an amazing park in our own home state.

PROGRAM SUMMARY (13 PTS)

3.1 IDENTIFY YOUR ROLE AS A CLIENT:   (3 sentence maximum: 1 PT)

I, as a college student would love a park on campus near the Kirby-Smith dorm where I could unwind from a long day of class at a park without having to drive or walk to the other side of campus. There are plenty of places to study on LSU’s campus but nowhere to unwind, exercise, study and picnic all in the same area, especially in the West campus area. I think a park is just what LSU’s campus is needing and I would love to be in walking distance from it after class or from the Kirby-Smith dorm.

3.2  DESCRIBE THE SITE:   (8 sentence maximum: 4 PTS)

This site would be like none other, but still blending into LSU’s campus perfectly. For studying there will be a quiet zone (where you are expected to stay away from unless studying) and a shaded area with a few long tables. For the exercise features there will be a half-mile trail surrounding the park, an outdoor vertical press, chest press, single elliptical, 4-person pendulum, abs and dips station, 2-person back and arm combo, 4-person leg press and a single rower. There will also be a picnic area with some tables and shading. For unwinding there will be a grass area with water fountains and a bathroom, a designated “dog area,” and also hammocks in a sand area. For the landscape there will be flowers, green grass, asphalt for the track, and trees in the study and unwinding area, and also sand in the hammock area.

4.2   JUSTIFY YOUR CHOICE:  (500 words maximum: 10 PTS)

The IDLA team not only focuses on the project's needs, but also what the client wants for the project. They have a track record of working with their client to make their vision come to life. Their work with the Thousand Palms Park Rehabilitation and Expansion in Thousand Palms, CA shows the expertise and design capabilities needed for my project. Their use of the local plants in California make the space beautiful, and for my project, I imagine the park to have many broad Oaks and Magnolia trees with Spanish moss hanging from the limbs, much like LSU's campus. Another reason I have chosen the IDLA team is because of their use of recycling. In Thousand Palms, they recycled a run-down shelter into a large gazebo that provides shade. Thousand Palms park also offers plenty of seating and some for watching baseball games. Also offered are basketball courts, fountains, plenty of walkways, and also shaded playgrounds to eliminate some of the heat for the children playing. The IDLA team could provide LSU with a park that satisfies the wants and needs of students and faculty alike, providing plenty of walkways and walking paths, shaded areas for studying and relaxing, and recreational areas for exercise and basketball.
