Abstract— Information, Communication and Technology has been a key factor towards economic growth in both developed and the developing countries. Information and communication technologies (ICT) have been at the heart of economic changes for more than a decade. ICT sector plays an important role, notably by contributing to rapid technological progress and productivity growth. Information is a powerful asset for every individual in this modern world. New technologies and their implementation in productive activities has help to change the economic structure of Nigeria’s economy. This paper examines Information and Communication Technology and it importance to individual, organization and the economy at large. It also placed emphasis on.

I. INTRODUCTION

Information and communication technology has been a key factor to the world’s economic growth. Information and Communication Technology is an umbrella term that includes any communication device or application, encompassing: radio, television cellular phones, computer and network hardware and software, satellite systems and so on, as well as the various services and application. Economic competitiveness depends on productivity level and in the knowledge economy; ICT sectors determine the productivity level. As a result, we can say that the power of economic competitiveness of a country depends on the productivity of its ICT sector []. ICT is crucially important for sustainable economic development in developing countries. These changes have been observed in almost all aspect of life: economics, education, communication, and travel. In a technology-driven society, getting information without any delay is very important to both sender and receiver. Most significant changes experienced by most developed countries have been traced to the impact of Information and Communication Technology.

II. RELATED WORKS

According to Monday obaidjevwe (2008), new ICTs can offer real opportunities to improve the quality of community life. It is also important to deepen our level of reflection on community dynamics and on the constraints encountered when introducing and using ICTs for development. A healthy information.

III. ICT AND ITS IMPORTANCE

ICT has been the basis for economic development and this has driven man to seek for ways in order to enhance the processing of information and communicating such information to one another no matter the distance and it should be on a real time basis. In order to survive in the information age lies on adequate access to national and global information networks. This has been a bedrock to the survival and development of any nation and this has forced us to devise initiative to counter difficulties such as reliable infrastructure, skilled personnel, open government among all.

There lies two main types on technology: computing and telecommunication. The technologies covered  are the computer system, internet/electronic, mobile phones and fax machine.

VIII. SUGGESTED STRATEGIES TO INCREASE RAW BANDWIDTH

Some strategies can be employed to increase the raw bandwidth used in internet access and this includes:

a. Utilizing shared-access satellite channels for communications between geographically diverse sites efficiently

b. Utilizing packet radio networks for mobile tactical environments.

Packet radio is a packet based switching technology that can be used for the transmission of digital data through wireless or radio communication links. It is a form of digital transmission used to construct wireless computer networks.

IX. DEVELOPMENT OF A GIGABIT BACKBONE NETWORK (GB)

Many carriers have decided to incorporate a gigabyte network backbone in order to increase their speed and internet bandwidth so that users can connects to the outside world at a faster rate.

X. CONCLUSIONS

The Internet is seen to be an undisputed force towards the growth and development of any countries. A country that wants to participate actively in the global world must embrace the use of internet. The internet provides many features which has help to make our daily activities easier; features such as e-mail, e-commerce, online banking, all to mention but few.  One of the main problems that remain a key bottle neck for poor Internet diffusion in Nigeria is low and expensive bandwidth.

It has also been noted that inadequate information infrastructure is also a key factor to poor internet diffusion in Nigeria. To increase the rate of internet diffusion and telephone applications, there requires the need for private/public intervention and collaboration in order to improve the current ICT equipment and infrastructure and local bandwidth capacity to reduce the cost of application and improve QoS.
