ay iDepression: an emotional state that affects the ability to enjoy life. Depression affects more people between the teenage years than in all the others. There are so many different causes of depression such as unfavorable events, stress, and a negative body image. These factors can end a person’s life without care.

A unfavorable events increase a person's chance of developing depression. Such things such as big event that goes wrong, drugs or alcohol, moving to college and not managing time correctly are possible factors that can lead a person into being depressed.  The National Institute of Mental Health talks about the effects of moving into college, and being depressed. College students have a lot on their plate. Especially as a freshman in college, students forget how to manage time, and how to deal with life everyday events without the help of parents. Depending on the ability you have to complete these tasks could decide on if you become depressed. Symptoms of depression can be feelings of prolonged hopelessness, sadness, and worthlessness. The National Institute of Mental Health reminds its readers that each person does not have to experience every symptom, for each person is different, and case is important.

To avoid depression one should try doing things such as exercise, getting enough sleep, talking with friends/family, and going into the world to express yourself can benefit a person who purposefully trying to avoid depression. To continue, sometimes severe depression can lead to suicidal thoughts. Suicidal thoughts or actions are dangerous, and they show how serious depression as a whole is.

Inside each major group of depression, there are subcategories, like

At times a person after a loved one dies, or a family member loses a job, they may start to feel sad or very sad. However, not all sadness is considered depression. As said earlier in the report, depression is the prolonged feeling of hopelessness, sadness, or worthlessness. If a loved one died, or lost their job, a person may go through the stages of grief, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. There are many differences between going through the stages of grief and depression. When someone proceeds through the stages of grief, they often think about the positive memories they had before the event occurred. Contrary, depression people do not interest or pleasure for two weeks or longer. Additionally, a person who has depression loses their worth/self esteem. While a person going through the grieving process does not lose anything related to the self esteem. Someone who has gone through parts of the grieving process can develop into depression.

There are many different types of depression, such as major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and psychotic depression. Sometimes people can become depressed in different season. For example, the “seasonal affective disorder.” Seasonal Affective Disorder is category of depression where during the winter months of the year, a person becomes depressed from lack of sunlight. Treatment for this can be light therapy and antidepressants. Bipolar disorder is related to depression. Someone who has bipolar disorder experiences extreme high and low mood swings, and they can happen very fast. For instance, someone can be talking and is very sad, and then fifteen minutes later they are screaming at someone for doing something. No matter what category of depression a person is diagnosed for it is all depression and should be taken seriously.

In men, women, teens and children depression can be found. Women can have many of the symptoms of depression, but the main three factors are sadness, worthlessness, and guilt. These main symptoms/factors of depression can be cause because of menstrual cycles, post-birth of a baby (postpartum depression), or low self worth/body image. Men can experience feelings of tiredness, irritable, lose interest in activities or have lack of sleep. Depression and suicide at times go hand and hand. For instance, women are more likely to attempt suicide, and be unsucessful, while more men die from suicide in the United States, the National Institute of Mental Health reminds its readers. One possible reason that the suicide death rate for men is higher could be because men go to drinking alcohol or doing drugs sooner than women.

Moving on the children, girls and boys, equal before puberty, can also develop depression. However it is a lot harder to tell if a child is in a “phase” or has actual problems, such as depression. Children who complain that they don’t feel good, constantly and are not sick, but are just trying to avoid going to school can be showing a sign of early depression. Furthermore, once a child shows that they do not want to go to school can next show a loss in interest in activities that they recently liked. An example of this is when a child loved soccer, but after “not feeling good” and then not going to school they lose interest in that sport and result to staying in their room for a prolonged period of time; could show yet another reason they have depression. In a teen, depression is one of the most inclining problems the United States is facing. Teens can become develop depression from being bullied, low self esteem, or they become stressed from school and life in general. It is almost as hard to tell if a teenager has depression as it is hard to tell if a child has depression. This is becuase teenager deny the problem, or do not even realize that they have a problem.  In order for a teen to receive help, parents, friends or family member may consult the teen and see whether they realize the problem or not. If the teen does not realize it then get help for them. It is worse to keep depression in than let it  out with the help of a counselor or medicine.

Treatment is a very important part of the healing process for depression. To add, there are many different options for someone looking to be treated. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Computer/Internet Based Therapy and Problem Solving Therapy are examples of some options for a person with depression. Each one works on a different healing process. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy help with clearing the mind, and changing negative thinking. While Interpersonal Therapy is when someone try to understand and work through troubled relationship, that could prevent a relationship from getting worse, or makes the depression worse.  Computer/ Internet Based Therapy is when someone used the internet, like emailing back and forth with a counselor, or downloading an app that can give treatment and education. Problem Solving Therapy is something that help a person improve their own ability to deal with stressful life experiences. Every therapy has it’s own positives and negative, and sometimes someone might even have to take more than of the therapies to be fully treated. Every depression case for a person is different and no matter what circumstances are treatment is very important.

In conclusion, depression is a major problem and should be treated as soon as it is discovered. Even in the worst conditions depression can be treated, whether it be through counseling, or medication a person who has depression needs to be treated. If left untreated, the depression could show up in a later in adulthood.
