Ever since I was a boy when ever I was asked what did I want to be when I grew up, I didn't know how to answer the question. I knew I wanted to do something that would make the world a better place. I wanted to make people lives better and easier. As I grew older, I realized the best way to do this is to be a politician. Politicians are the backbone of this country and if I can climb the ladder in politics than I know I can make so many lives better in this country. Politicians are people who want to make a difference in their community and take charge to make things better for the residents. I can start of with city council, then move my way up and see how far I can go. In politics it's good to have friends to help you get what you want. People always say you should never trust politicians but I believe I can be the politician you can trust. We live in a glorious country and with a lot of work in know I can make a difference that people will be proud of. One day I'd like to be sitting in the oval office.
The career I originally choose for this assignment was the President of the United States, but after doing some thinking I have decided to use politician as the career for my research. By selecting a politician I will be able to better go in depth of what the job entitles and what the journey is to get to my accomplishments.
The road of politics is a long and tough journey which requires a person to have many specific characteristics. To be a politician a person needs to be able to be able to talk to anyone and be able to sell himself to anyone. A politician must earn each individuals trust and be able to relate to the common person. When it comes to an election, every vote matters (careertrend.com). It is obvious that to be a good politician the social aspect is one of the most important, but another key tool is good hygiene. A good politician dresses there best and stays in shape so they always look their best. A good way to win people over is to make a positive first impression and looks play a big role in that. Knowing the issues in the community you work with will help you make better decisions to solve those issues at hand. Solving issues and making life better for citizens is what politicians want and that is always good for reelection. Some other qualities that are good to have to be a politician include be skilled at writing, researching, understanding an audience, crisis management and problem solving (careertrend.com). Not everyone can be a good politician, it takes a rare and specific individual.
Being a politician isn’t something that anyone can just decide to do, it takes a good deal preparation and perspiration to make it to where you want to be(cfnc.org). For example, I myself have started with city government to get my foot in the door. When I was a senior in high school I was granted a internship with the Raleigh York, the mayor of Thomasville. This showed me what it was like at entry level politics. I got to see what the mayor did each day with his job and what responsibilities he had. On my last day of my internship the mayor gave me some advice for my political career, he said “with great power, comes great responsibility.” When I finished my internship, I was more confident than ever that I wanted to be a politician. I regularly go to city council meetings and other events in the city of Thomasville to show everyone I am an active member of the community. I have already earned a chair on the Board of Historic Preservation committee in Thomasville. Nothing is official yet but my plan is to run for city council in two years in Thomasville. I’m trying my best to get my foot in the door and get in with good with as many people as I can. I have already realized that there is a lot of work that goes into being a city official but each day I look forward to getting out on the streets and trying my best to make a difference. I get such a good feeling inside to know I’m doing what I love. If I am elected a council member in Thomasville, I have already thought of some ways I'd like to see the town prosper. I have thought of some great ways to help the city grow in size. For this we need to bring more small businesses into the city, this will help the economy and get more people into the city. There are also a lot of old buildings around town that are falling apart and in my opinion these are eye sores in the town. Tearing these down might be a little costly but if we do this, it will give us more space to build nice new buildings for the people of thomasville to use. There is a lot of other things that need to be improved in Thomasville as well but these are the couple I think are most important.
After I work with the city of Thomasville for a few years, I believe I will move on to a higher office in government. I don’t know exactly what the future holds for me exactly when it comes to higher government but I’d love hold a position like senator or governor. After I hold a prestiges position like this, it will be easier to run for president of the United States. To run for even a position like senator it takes a lot people to get the campaign to run smoothly. Here are some of the most important details to a well oiled and successful campaign. After announcing that your running in any campaign, you haft to create a strategy of how your going to run things. You see a lot of candidates to plan out their strategy before they run and this almost always hurts them in the long run. After you have everything planned out, it’s good to gather a team. Your campaign team should include people who you know will have your back and work hard to help you get elected to office. These will be the people who call on others or just pass out flyers to get your name out there and let citizens know what it is you stand for exactly. It should be clear to everyone where you stand on all major and minor issues. It’s also good to get out and just listen to what other people have to say and value the opinions they give you. Listening to what people say will help you connect with people and relate to them on a deeper level. Another huge factor in a winning campaign is having plenty of money to spend when need be. So if your not already extremely wealthy you will have to have a lot of fundraisers(reference.com). Usually a fundraiser for example, is a fancy meal where everyone buys tickets and all the proceeds go to your campaign. There are a lot of other ways to raise money as well. There is so many aspects that go into a well run and winning campaign, no one person can do it by himself. You haft to know the right people to help you get to the top and if I’m lucky when it’s my time to run for office I’ll have made the connections to get me where I want to go.
Politicians are leaders who want to see people live the best life possible. Politicians don’t do it for the money or the fame, they do it because they care about the people around them. The president of the United States only makes 400,000 dollars (careersingovernment.com).That is a lot of money but for the most powerful man in the country, you would think he would receive more than that. US senators and governors only make about a 175,000 dollars a year which is a decent salary but still you would figure they would make more than that (academicinvest.com).These political leaders deal with a lot of abuse and criticism at the hands of the media and other political opponents. There are also so much pressure on you as a leader, it can be very stressful. It’s clear to me that politicians do what they do because they care about the people.
To be a politician, you aren’t required to have a college degree in anything but it looks better and is more beneficial to get a degree in something that can help you improve your knowledge and experience for your political career. Some popular choices of study would be business, economics, psychology, law, or political science(academicinvest.com). The more experience you receive will help you become an even more well rounded and sharp politician.
In conclusion, being a politician isn’t for everyone but I believe if I work hard and stay focused I can make it to the oval office. Politician is the career I believe is best suited for me.
