Ever wonder why the windows of stores in a grocery store are nice-looking that give you that desire to buying their item? According to Malcolm Gladwell’s “The Science of Shopping,” individual named Paco Underhill studies the behaviour of millions of American shoppers by looking at statistics and recorded footages inside the stores. Customer investigator such as Paco helps raise the income of the shops by providing an untrue sense of public space inside a shopping area by copying the behaviour of customers through the lens.

Nowadays it is very easy to get unclear by the display of merchandises as you stroll along. To attract customers many shops, try to make a more relaxed atmosphere for their clients. One of the things that help it is to put out samples with an employee to describe the product and what it has to offer health-wise. This way customers can taste it which could be a helping factor in them purchasing it. One more trick shops are using to make customers buy their merchandise is to make customer stroll around the store, so they can see everything. Shops put products such as fruit and meats as well dairy products in very different sites of the store to make the purchaser get a clear view of what they have.

The observation was carried out Thursday, November 30, 2017, between 16:00 to 18:00 various stages were observed during the period of study. At the entrance, some programmed glass entryways easily open as the general store gradually gets pressed with customers of different types. A hardly audible but calming music tune play from the speakers that are apparently positioned overhead and on every corner of the store. As people continue to stream in, the shop gets almost packet and sounds of people chatting and trolley- wheels squeaking wraps the soothing music in a blanket of little but less disturbing commotion. As I walk past the sleek glass doors and across the smooth marble floor, a cool and refreshing air-conditioned breeze softly brushes over my face.

Grocery shop’s, or otherwise called markets, are basic for the world to survive because it enables us to buy food and other necessities. Like a consistent market, items are isolated into various areas and divisions, for example, meat, shop, solidified products, dairy, bread, et cetera. This kind of framework is utilized to keep the items sorted out, and comparable items are set together so they can be effortlessly found. Obviously, these segments contain mark name items that catch many the buyer's eyes. We clearly require sustenance to survive. The best-preferred standpoint of these grocery stores is that we, the purchasers can get every one of the things we require, across the board put, and now and again at low costs.

I observed a Grocery, and while observing I noticed first that the product was on the right side of the store, meats were located at the back and dairy products on the left side of the store. What this does is it causes customers to have to make a full look at the store to buy the essentials, thus being attracted by all the other merchandise the store has to offer. While observing many different types of people, throughout the supermarket; everyone has their own taste when it comes to grocery shopping. Some are only shopping for themselves and others are shopping for a family.

Next, I had the opportunity to observe many shoppers, whether they were coming in too quickly grab a gallon of milk or to get their weekly groceries for the week. Although if you’re willing to take the time to cut out coupons each week and take the time you can save yourself a lot of money on groceries. Everyone has their own favourite for what brand mayonnaise they like. Everybody has their own preference on what they like better; the market has huge amounts of similar items by a wide range of organizations to give the customer a decision. Likewise, some might be veggie lovers that will skip directly finished the meat segment and simply search around the fish, dairy, sustenance’s that acquire their way of life.

As I watched numerous basic need customers they circle all over the passageways, precisely taking their essentials on their rundown and I found that many are making impromptu motivation buys. While watching I found that a few customers had records while generally didn't. Almost every customer that goes in for a couple of things winds up acquiring a few different things in their graph that they didn't anticipate purchasing. I observe each customer and there each move I ask myself what are they doing and why? I often wonder what is precisely going ahead in the customer's brain, what are they endeavoring to accomplish going down practically every passageway. I for one feel that we are wired to purchase on motivation; we exploit our condition.

While observing customers I saw that there were many persons that shopped alone instead of some that shopped with youths. I notice that the family’s that shopped with the children their children would demand certain items that their mother, or father didn’t initially intend to buy. But that’s what happens with most family’s that shop with children. Like most grocery stores this one is large to provide almost everything the customer needs on a daily shopping visit.  There is a huge parking lot for the customers convince as well. All throughout the store hang banners with all different colours to catch the shopper’s eye these banners represent many items that are new or on sale. In a large grocery store, it is very important to have colourful sings and banners to catch the shopper’s eye while shopping.

I additionally found that clients were essentially more inclined to purchasing unfortunate sustenance’s like cakes and treats when utilizing a credit or check card. As I took after and watched outfits I saw their shopping baskets loaded with snacks garbage sustenance, and additionally other week after week basic needs, for example, meats, deliver and dairy. Consumers who shopped with larger baskets were also more susceptible to the impulsive purchase of unhealthy products as well. If you’re anything like me, you’d find doing grocery shopping to be a big waste of time. Absolutely, I know it’s important, but even so, I don’t have to like doing it. I find every time I go grocery shopping; I spend hours upon hours looking for things. The thing about doing grocery shopping is most people do not know where things are kept in the store. Certainly, there are those signs above every aisle, but they have two problems – either they’re not descriptive enough or you have to physically walk all the way there to read them. While observing I found that many shoppers were returning to the same aisle they have already been to.

At this grocery store, they have a small but nice bakery which makes fresh pastry’s and bread daily. They make cakes and pies which is great for the customers to have available on daily bases. At the deli bar, they also make quick to go meals such as sandwiches pizza etc.

Nowadays there is a new system that Stop and Shop offer. It’s called “Pea Pod “shopping this is where all you’re shopping is done online and delivered the next day. This is a great alternative, like many you pack the family in the car, go to the grocery store and deal with the kids running around, stand in a line, then drive back to unload groceries.  But there is a better and easier way to save time and the aggravation. There is a quick easier way to check out if you're only there for a quick grab, it’s the self-checkout.

While observing customers using self-checkout I noticed many people knew how to operate it and it was no problem. However, there were few that became annoyed while using self-checkout. I have personally used self-checkout and it is very sensitive and you must follow and do as it says, and everything will go smooth.  This is something people hate and some love I guess it just depends on the person. I found that at another grocery store Stop and Shop they have self-scanners which I think is a great idea, so the customers can keep track on how much their spending especially if they're on a budget.

I found most of grocery shopping is done on the weekend which is the closest many of us have to free time. Although this grocery store isn’t as big as Rimi and Prisma which is a huge competition it is still a function grocery store that has lots of business.  Paco Gladwell’s states a good and helpful idea in the article that a store should create “a kind of oasis”. This meaning that the store should be inviting and comfortable.  There are many different approaches that a grocery store uses to draw us in deeper and keep us there for a longer period. Meaning the further into the store we go the longer we will stay. The longer we stay the more money we will spend. Grocery shopping is an essential in everyone’s life this is a chore that is done weekly or monthly.

According to Paco, women have more patience and shop longer than men and women account for seventy percent of the dollar value of all purchases and women are still the shoppers of America. To be completely honest I seen the same number of women as there were men grocery shopping. I do think that women do have more patience than a man while shopping.

As Gladwell’s article “The Science of Shopping” mentions that most shoppers tend to enter a store and do a scan.  Gladwell’s article also mentioned that our world is set up to suit right-handed individuals. Gladwell, 1996 After spending a great deal of time observing the grocery store its goal is to meet the needs of who they serve to make their shopping experience the best it can be. The goal of any retail business is to produce and be successful. After reading and focusing on the “science of shopping” anyone after reviewing this can get a better perception of the way a business works and on their own shopping experience as well

As I continuously observe and study more about the supermarket set up, I understood that the very same people who were located at specific places in the store the preceding day were still at their location the day after. If my research went on for quite some time, I wonder if I would be able to control how many hours a day each associated works at their place. Additionally, if there are staff rotations that are done, I wonder whether each assistant is well conversant with every department at the store.
